This is my first visit and I will be a returning customer when I’m in the area. My Veggie Sandwich was made to perfection. I also had a Taste of the Famous«RatTrap». I will be getting that on my next visit. I give it a perfect 10

Been going here since they opened. There is nothing better. The Dutch crunch, the thinly sliced peppered turkey, the cheese… Oh my! Call ahead and order as they can get very busy!!! They are also very large… So a half a Sammy can go a long way. Again, best sandwich around! Hands down!

Awesome place for subs, this whole in the wall made the best sandwich. Their rat trap subs is a killer and so is their bacon potato salad. Come by and you won’t be disappointed!

I love going to the rat trap for their veggie and cheese sandwiches with cucumber pickles. I like when they have the fire going in there.

This spot is a Newcastle institution. They sell cheese(as the name suggests), but the real jewel is the deli counter. They don’t have a big menu because they don’t need too. Do yourself a favor, go out of your way to stop by. Get the Rat Trap. You won’t regret it.

I love old-style delis and can’t believe I had never heard of this one. I’m a frequent traveler on I-80 and a friend suggested I stop for lunch at the Newcastle Cheese Shop. I was greeted with a smile ordered the house special Rat Trap sandwich. Multiple meats and cheese on a Dutch crunch roll. Really good. So now it’s my turn to recommend.

OMG do yourself a favor and stop at this little sandwich shop in downtown Newcastle. The Rat Trap sandwich is the best! I used to live in Auburn and I would frequently visit this place. Moved to the Bay Area so I don’t get my Rat Trap anymore but man I still have cravings! So delicious and the staff were always super nice. Be prepared for a line and a little bit of a wait. Seating is limited but trust me it’s worth the wait.

Place smells like rot, old wood, dust and probably century old animal droppings. Which would be fine if it were an old barn still. But it’s not, it’s a sandwich shop. The regular customers don’t seem to mind but they also appear to have lost their sense of smell probably from too much home made amphetamines. If you’re looking for that third world dining experience without having to travel out of the country this place fits the bill.

STAFFHATESCHILDREN Walking up along the deck from the parkinglot with our 3yr old, the waitress smiled at me and waited til my toddler was next to the eye height table to start spraying spraying it with chemicals. We believe in supporting locally owned businesses but that was inexcusable.

Great staff! Customer service is A+!! My bread was stale…:( I have to say I prefer Newcastle produce for a great sandwich! So many more options and customizations such as, sprouts and other fresh produce, a variety of mustards and spreads, and delicious bread!

I have been coming here for a really long time and it has such a sweet spot in my heart because my dad used to sell meat and cheese to the cheese shop through the company he worked for(SAAGS out of San Leandro) and he ALWAYS brought me a sandwich when he came to visit me in Roseville. My dad passed away nine years ago, but every time I taste a delicious Rat Trap or enjoy a salad, I remember him. The food is fantastic. The staff always customizes your order to your liking which is so nice. One time, my daughter came with me and we forgot to buy her little bag of chips. The owner graciously let her have a bag for free. I could go on and on, but suffice it to say, customer service like this is rare and when you add that to amazingly delicious food, you have a winner.

Finally had a chance to check out this place. Strange hours, closed on Sun/Mon. Late lunch(2:20 pm), right before their 3 pm close time. They were out of most bread choices, so we went w/sour dough sliced bread(Truckee Baking Co). Not bad, but would like to have tried the famous dutch crunch. Hubs got the pastrami sandwich. His remark, «good, but not the best.» Also ordered a turkey sandwich. Definitely recommend adding honey mustard w/it. Nice spread of green leaf lettuce, peppercinis, tomatoes, onions, cheese. Awesome salt n vinegar chips. Bottled soda(always a plus). Place was pretty crowded with locals. Overall, a great little gem in a cool neighborhood. Went hiking at Griffith Quarry prior. Big recommend. Docked 1 star for being out of most bread. Maybe they could add a signature ‘dirty’ sauce, like Ike’s sandwiches(SF). But, overall, a great sandwich.

I was visiting a friend who lives in Newcastle and she brought me here. I felt like a sandwich for lunch, but not your typical subway sandwich chain restaurant. I was really glad she brought me here! This is called the Rat Trap, but on here it only says Newcastle Cheese Shop. Actually, not sure which is the legitimate name, but it is both haha. CUSTOMERSERVICE: Super friendly, fun and helpful. It feels like you are all friends. FOOD: I had the veggie, cheese sandwich and it was really good! I’ll definitely come back and try more next time I’m in town! I also had one of the bottled rootbeers and it was yummy. I don’t remember the brand, but it was the natural ingredient one. DECOR/WAIT: We came in a Wednesday during lunch time and we made it just before a crowd came, so we did not have much of a wait. They have a handful of tables inside and a few outside. LOCATION: Such a cute little plaza in the little old downtown area of Newcastle! There is parking outside, but not a ton.
