Tugged in the far back corner of the plaza, this place is ran by a Japanese couple serving some legit nigiri and sashimi I came here on a Friday around 5pm and it was empty. Service is average and nothing to note about. I ordered a shrimp tempura dinner set and it was horrible!!! The batter and shrimp was soggy and tasteless and any sides that came along with it left a bad taste in my mouth. Felt as if they microwaved my food. However, where this restaurant shines are the fresh sashimi and nigiri it serves. I ordered couple fatty tuna, salmon, sweet shrimp, uni, unagi, hamachi nigiri and it was delicious. The chefs presentation of the food and knife skills are not the best I have seen, but it does the job if you are craving some legit nigiri in Fremont. All in all, I would only return to try their sashimi or nigiri, Do not order their entrees, it’s terrible :/

Don’t even try! Trust me go somewhere else! There’s another place in the vicinity which I haven’t tried, but I’m sure it’s a lot better! We should have left when no one was inside!

This place serves LEGIT and fresh nigiri! None of that using sauce to mask the taste of a 10 month old fish sitting in the back of the freezer type ordeal goes on here(okay, I’m probably being a bit dramatic… but you get the point). I was craving nigiri one day and tried to call for to-go, to which they REFUSED. This shocked me because usually restaurants try to make the $$ and start letting loose of the values. But for sushi, particularly fresh kinds, even a matter of bringing it across the restaurant can already decrease in temperature. One should always sit by the sushi bar for the best experience. But anyways. So I came in person one day to check it out. We were the only ones present(even on a Friday during dinner time). I honestly think it’s because people nowadays can’t appreciate traditional sushi. Everything was surprisingly fresh and although the grade wasn’t out-of-this-world and the chef’s skills were just average, it’s probably the best Fremont has to offer. Prices were reasonable. It’s a mom-and-pop shop so be sure to tip them extra hard for their efforts! They’re so friendly too. Oishii! P. S., as much as I praise their nigiri, I did also try a bento to which I would not recommend. Stick with the sushi.

This place sucks. Walk-in to some guy sitting and just staring at me and my friend, lady comes out and seats us but fails to give us the sushi menu. She their cups are dirty, their establishment is dirty and old and the menus should be replaced since the laminate is no longer doing its job. Their food: yuck! I got the chicken katsu box and that shit was so salty I kept reaching for my water(the bottle I brought with me) since I couldn’t even work up the courage to drink out of their dirty cup. I only ate the tempura but even that was ‘eh’. The service was so-so, most of the time our server was MIA or talking to the other two men there. When I finally finished all the 5 pieces of tempura she came to get my plate and asked basically why I didn’t eat the katsu, so I told her because it was salty. She didn’t offer a discount didn’t apologize or even cared that I didn’t like it and when she came back with the bill I paid her exact amount with no tip since the service and food sucked and she said I’m required to leave one. So at that point I left the required percentage she told me to and dipped out. This place sucks and I advise everyone to go the further distance to a better place. Oh and the reason I chose this place is mainly because I was hungry. WORSTDECISIONEVER. Stay away!

Just came here for dinner, Friday night, so I guess that’s why wait was kinda long? But not as if there was a line. Ok, so yeah prices were reasonable but seriously you get the littlest portion! Plus they put wayyyy to much vinegar on the rice! It just was not good… big disappointment. The cups were dirty & there was plastic in the tamago! The place is dirty & run down. Waitress, an elderly lady… sweet but a bit too rushy & compensated for the long wait w salad & miso soup, but still just not good. I’m surprised the place is still in business. Sorry, but never coming here again.

I was invited here by Unilocaler Gary Y. for a double date with our plus ones after we met at the last Unilocal Event. :D Overall: This hole in the wall place has a good variety of affordable fish! The place could use a little spicing up but the food quality is good and won’t break the bank! Sushi — We had the Omakase and got 32 pieces to start off with. They did a great job with it, picking kanpachi, hamachi, scallop and toro. They were great pieces and I enjoyed the wasabi under the fish but it was bit stronger on others so I couldn’t taste the fish as much as I wanted. The toro was amazing so we got more as well as the hamachi! I was able to enjoy uni, Saba and tako for the first time without any unpleasantness. Yummy! Kitchen items — we got beef tongue and fried shrimp. They were both good and I really liked the crunchiness of the shrimp. The dipping sauce they provided was well balanced for both of the dishes! Drinks — the sake was the best I’ve ever had. It had a refreshing after taste and not as much of that alcohol taste most sakes leave you with. Service — the server was super nice and she busted her butt to handle a couple tables of 4 and the whole sushi bar that basically came around the same time.

As an avid chirashi taster, I have high expectations for chirashi. Their regular chirashi is only $ 14 and their special chirashi is omakase style. We got both and both were equally unimpressive and high disappointing. They both looked the same. Never have I seen such a cheap and stingy Chirashi. Thinly sliced and only 1 fish per slice and not very many variations. When I got the bill, the special chirashi was $ 24, $ 10 more that the unimpressive regular but had 1 extra thin toro which also had a piece of fish bone. The more I think about it, the more upset and disappointed I feel. I haven’t tried the other items on the menu but this review is based of out what was from my chirashi experience. I can strongly say that I didn’t get what I paid for.

A diamond in the rough, tucked away in a small corner. Here you’ll find authentic and tasty Japanese Nigiri with Yoshi. Don’t come here for the décor but for quality fish comparable to SF.

I was really looking forward to eating at this quaint restaurant but was a little disappointed. I guess I should have dialed down my expectations accordingly — it’s a cute neighborhood destination but nothing worth a special visit. The best part about a meal here is that it’s relatively affordable for some more unusual cuts of fish(beyond the classic tuna/salmon). They started us off with freshly made miso soup, which was actually one of the highlights of our meal. Really full of umami flavor and I’d recommend just ordering one if whatever you order doesn’t come with one. Then got the beef tongue appetizer. It’s not bad but it might just be that I don’t particularly like the texture/taste of beef tongue so I wasn’t blown away. It was nicely grilled but a bit too chewy for my taste. My favorite was definitely the unagi(so good) and the salmon. The hamachi was pretty bad and I wasn’t impressed with most of the fish in the moriawase sushi set. Would recommend just ordering what you want separately. The uni was fine, the saba was pretty good for saba(but still saba and I still like salmon better), the tuna was average(but then again tuna is usually pretty bad in the US), the kanpachi and hirame were not very memorable, and the aji was pretty good. Unfortunately the vinegar seasoning of the rice sometimes came off a bit too strong and the rice wasn’t very good quality, falling apart at one point when my mom tried to dip her sushi into her soy sauce-wasabi mix(I know, that’s a no-no for some purists, but that’s how my mom likes her sushi). When we came for late lunch on Wed, the place was pretty empty(only 1 other table), but I guess it’s because as a sushi restaurant this hits the not inexpensive but not expensive price point, which means it’s not a place to go regularly nor is it a place to go for special occasions. If I want super cheap sushi I’d just go for Zensen, whereas if I want really good sushi, I’d probably head elsewhere. On the other hand, the lunch sets are a pretty good deal — the moriawase was only 13.95 for 8 pieces of nigiri and a California roll, and the bentos are only 7.95, so it’s not a bad option for an affordable lunch if you’re craving Japanese food in the area.

My brother in law has been going to this place for years and I finally got to go! We sat at the bar and had omakase with yoshi. Like many have said, this is not a roll place. It is traditional Japanese sushi with items you won’t find everywhere. We spent about 2 hours, polished off a gigantic bottle of sake and had some unique dishes which were delicious! Can’t wait to come back!

My co-workers and I were here for lunch. One co-worker brought his own lunch and was told he had to leave. My other co-worker ordered the Bento Box Special. It arrived with what appeared as 3 white hairs atop the teriyaki chicken.(Yikes, what is that?) I ordered the sushi rice bowl with tuna. I couldn’t believe how little food was there for the price of $ 13. Besides that, when was the last time you had to drink your miso soup straight out of the bowl? Where’s our spoons? So for mine and his LUNCH, our total was just under $ 30. But to top it off, our waitress demanded a 10% tip. Excuse me?! Where is that on the check? There’s no law saying we have to give you a tip! So over all; bad service, bad manners, bad value, and bad housekeeping! Don’t go here.

Literally a hole in the wall. More like a corner. It’s easy to miss Sushi Yoshi if you’re not looking for it, but it’s well worth the find. First off, this is a back-to-basics type of place. No mayo drenched rolls being lit on fire. No crazy teriyaki/tempura concoction. It’s basic food. The fish is pretty fresh. The chirashi bowl is a steal, IMO. For only $ 14 you get to sample all they have to offer. Prices are super decent for the quality of food. I know to keep their prices low, the restaurant looks a little run down. I think it can use some updating, only because everything feels so old that it feels a little dirty. The carpet makes me feel uncomfortable because it’s probably the original carpet and has never been changed. I have no doubts that they keep the place clean, but it’s difficult to keep something clean for so long without replacing it, especially when there’s so much traffic going in and out everyday. Despite that, I’ll still definitely be back because of the good quality and decent portions. Service is also pretty good.

I have no idea why I waited so long to write my review on one of my favorite local places to eat. My boyfriend and I have been coming here for the past 5 years… several times a month. You should sit at the bar if you wish to eat sushi. This is not your typical American Japanese restaurant(dont expect menu pages of rolls)… this is a Japanese restaurant! Japanese owned by Yoshi-san and Marti-san, who are so nice and they really care for their customers. Yes, the food takes awhile. It is basically a one man show behind the sushi bar and a one woman show in the kitchen. I recommend: Omakase at the bar for sure! Gyu Tan, karaage, tsukemono, ika geso-age What are you waiting for? GO.

********************** 1460 ********************* A family-opened small sushi joint, tucks in the corner of this shopping plaza. We couldn’t find it driving on Cedar Street. Lunch menu offers Bento box and ramen as well as sushi. Dad had the Saba & Katsu chicken Bento box, comes with miso soup, salad, and rice for only $ 7.95. I had the tempura and tuna sashimi Bento box, same price, tempura offers 2 shrimps and plenty of veggies tempura. Tonkotsu Ramen w/2 piece of Char Siu, half egg, seaweed, and bean sprout, it wasn’t the best I had, the broth was lighter. However, the ramen was nice, good texture, and generous portion. The Unagi nigiri was good. The hamachi was dried. The spicy tuna maki roll was OK. Service was attentive. We came at 1 pm, we waited 25 minutes for food to arrive. For what they serve in this part of town, it was better than we expected. Cheap eat!

5-stars for what it is. It is a traditional Japanese sushi place that is affordable enough for regular and casual dining. From what I understand, this place has existed for ages and had once served Japanese salarymen who worked at the old Nummi/Toyota/GM plant. The place is fairly quiet. Lot’s of take out orders. The only other customers were two other Japanese guys who were chatting with the chef. They were probably some local regulars. For the same price that you would pay at a typical sushi restaurant around here, you get authentic quality Japanese food! This is the only place that I know of in the lower east bay that serves real Japanese sushi. The sushi is great and all but don’t forget the other menu items as well. I tend to favor the grilled mackerel(not to be confused with fried Aji). I don’t know if it is on the menu but you should ask for the mackerel shioyaki with daikon oroshi. Maybe it is on the menu as an appetizer? Anyways, throw away the lemon, put some soy sauce onto the daikon, and eat it together with the hot fatty fish. Pure heaven. The soft shell crab with ponzu is quite good, too. The chirashi is great if you don’t like eating your dinner in piecemeal fashion. Unlike the expensive top-shelf sushi places in SF or Peninsula, you will find some cheaper ingredients like lean pink tuna(the frozen kind that you can get from Nijiya/Marukai), but I think it’s a completely reasonable compromise — besides, you shouldn’t be eating endangered tuna varieties, right? Right!!! ;) At least they don’t serve that nasty«white tuna» escobar trash fish that will give you orange discharge out the butt. Disclaimer: Do not expect any of the«fusion» type sushi that’s now become so ubiquitous in most major metro areas. You will not find Funky Gorilla Cheese Roll with extra sriracha at this establishment. If you ask for that crappy bastardization of sushi, the sushi nazi will ask you to commit seppuku. TL;DR — Authentic sushi at a very reasonable price. Nearly impossible to find in east bay.

I’m really surprised that this restaurant has just 3.5 stars. It’s amazing. I am not a sushi snob but I do love sushi and always looking for a good authentic sushi. This isn’t a place for rolls if you are into things like lion king roll or the any popular rolls from most places in Newark, Fremont, and Union City. I found this place only last week on a tuesday since then I have came here three times in 7 days. And I plan to go another two times this week. The reviews on here actually helped me pick my choices of nigiri! I loved it all! I am so glad I found this place! I will definitely come here every chance I get! Everyone is so nice and the owners are really friendly! Great different types of nigiri. I absolutely recommend coming here. Also, it seems like you have to come here often to earn your stripes to eat at the bar during lunch since its usually closed however, Yoshi does make exceptions. Bar is usually open during dinner, I plan to go again for a dinner experience one night! Definitely a whole in the hole type of spot.

Excellent find. This place is pretty great — and by great I really mean the freshness of the fish they serve, not the exterior or interior. All of the nigiri we had were fantastic(toro, hamachi, sake, and surprisingly, aji). By the looks of it, it’s got a lot of regulars. Will try the omakase at the counter next time and work on becoming a regular here. Tip: I’ve heard they get their fish on Tuesdays — so plan your visit accordingly. Also: the waitress speaks English, Chinese, and Japanese — she is not the chef’s wife.

Freshest sushi in the bay! Best sushi restaurant in NorCal that I’ve been to. Every dish I’ve gotten here is delicious. I love getting the beef tongue and hamachi Kama here. Very good and unique fish selection and good izakaya. Gyoza and chicken yakitori are also delicious. Yoshi is an awesome guy. Super funny and a one man show. All in all, a hidden and under appreciated gem. The wait can be slow but the quality is more than worth it.
