even though skippers is a pub, their food is also top notch IMO. their menu is small yet has delicious selections, mostly food you’ll find at diners — burgers, sandwiches, pasta, fajitas, buffalo wings, etc. they give generous portions of meals that i always seem to be taking home. i love their starters and juicy burgers especially. i also became«friends» with the barista/waitress within two trips to skippers. the staff is so friendly and sweet and the tab is never surprising. meals average around $ 10 – 15. they also have live music 4 nights a week and TVs everywhere you turn.

Used to go here when I worked on that side of town because my boss liked the place… but there was seriously something wrong with the food. A co-worker would get sick from it more often than not. Some of the servers are super nice and really try but everything is usually pretty slow. Looks like it worked out for some of the other reviewers, so maybe things have improved, I’d be cautious though!

Skippers closed a week ago and we’re really sad about that.

I came here for my friends’ band The Lyriqs when they opened for The Nick Clemons Band. The bands were AWESOME! I hear that Skippers gets some good talent in. I just went back to see both the bands down in Asbury. When I went, it was late on a weekday so no cars were outside, which made for real easy parking. My sister and I both ate. The fries were bangin! sooo good. I couldn’t stop eating them. I didn’t like my quesadilla, but my sister did. It tasted like it was made with marinara sauce instead of salsa, which I wasn’t in the mood for and wasn’t expecting. Other than that I had a greaat time — so 4 stars for live bands, a good time w/friends, drinks, and ok food.

Came back to this wonderful bar /restaurant /jazz venue and loved it once again. The music is superb, the food delicious and there’s a lovely friendly atmosphere amongst the regular clientele. It takes me about half an hour to get here from Manhattan, and it’s worth it every time

This is one of our favorite jazz places and must be the best kept secret in NJ. You get the same top musicians that play in the village in NYC, a great mix of American and ethnic bar food(samosas are my favorite!) and a cosy homey atmosphere. The owner comes around and says hello — one day I will myself retire, open a jazz club and start enjoying myself saying hello to my customers! One day… We go there on Sunday afternoons and at this time the place feels like you are just going down to your neighborhood bar to hang around with your good friends and listen to great jazz. Price? No cover at the door. Standard drink and food prices. A real bargain if you try doing the same in the city.

The service is terrible here. A couple of times we ordered drinks and it took forever. We kept having to remind our waitress that we ordered drinks/food and we’re still waiting. Also my friends and I would catch all the waitresses congregating in the corner eating and chit chatting while I’m sitting there parched. I think they changed management. I don’t know. The food is still good. And to our surprise, they had a jazz band play. They were great.

at this moment, skippers gets a four star rating from me. i’ve gone to skippers since 2004, so i have different skippers experiences for the two different management groups that have run the joint. for a long time, i was a longstanding loyalist to the previous owners and, if i wrote this review back in time, i would give five stars. for a long time, my co-workers and i considered it our«cheers» of sorts and a great place for us to kick back after a hard day toiling for the man. it was a kind of hideaway pub, with walls embellished in classic irish pub regalia, where you could tuck away and discreetly get a beer and some food if you wanted. a very chill, low-key place, but that had its busy and party moments(e.g. happy hour). the staff were very friendly, to both regulars and newbies — many of whom later became regulars. decently priced drinks. and standout menu items were the calamari and black-and-blue burger. friday lunches were always a packed house, but you could call in reservations, especially for birthday parties(which we regularly did). then management changed and it was being transformed into a latin jazz tapas bar. the old staff were there for about 5 seconds, but i suppose(and this is conjecture) it just didn’t mesh with the new direction of the bar. so, to my dismay, they were let go. as much as the owner was very nice and welcoming to customers, not seeing the regular staff was a big contributing factor for me to stop going. however, i recently stopped in skippers last week during happy hour with a co-worker. it had been a while since the management change and you can see that the place had gone through it growing pains and made a full transformation. a dark wooded enclave with modern artwork on its walls and charmingly lit with tiny white christmas lights along the ceiling molding; it was nicely decorated. at that time, the crowd was made up of public official suits and court house peeps. the waitress was nice and the happy hour specials were pretty good($ 2 kamikaze and harry cherry cocktails — not bad). plus, the bathroom didn’t change — it’s still clean and skeevy-free(that’s a big plus for me). that same night(a friday), we stopped back in skippers around midnight to check out karaōke — which was recommended to us by one of the waitresses. when you walk through the doors, you are in the back of the crowd who are all facing the stage. lyrics are projected against the wall behind some brave karaōke performer rocking on the mic. we walked in while this guy was freestyle ad libbing(this guy was seriously skilled). the crowd’s no longer business peeps, but locals(30s-ish and up). it looked pretty cool. however, because its a small space, you’re a sardine, so we really didn’t stay long for fear of lack of oxygen. because i can’t attest to the new menu, aside from it has a tapas section upon quick skim, i have to give skippers a four — from a five(«the old days»), to a two(my bitter days), to a four(today). as much as i was all hearkening for the good olé skippers days, i had a pleasant time that friday and would definitely go there again if in the mood. it won me over.

I’ve eaten here on two occasions; neither was very memorable. This is an OK place for a nightcap since it is so close to my building. The down side is a lot of suits come here at that time and, quite frankly, having to deal with them all day is enough for me. The hostess is friendly and the service is good but there is not much else. I can’t for the life of me remember what I ate. I know it wasn’t awful because that I would have remembered.

even though skippers is a pub, their food is also top notch IMO. i go here for lunch every so often after class. its location is walking distance from its surrounding colleges. overall it’s a small pub so it might not be a place to bring a large crowd. their menu is small yet has delicious selections, mostly food you’ll find at diners — burgers, sandwiches, pasta, fajitas, buffalo wings, etc. they give generous portions of meals that i always seem to be taking home. i love their starters and juicy burgers especially. i also became«friends» with the barista/waitress within two trips to skippers. the staff is so friendly and sweet and the tab is never surprising. meals average around $ 10 – 15. they also have live music 4 nights a week and TVs everywhere you turn.
