The apartment itself is very nice. The location isn’t great but that is because New Haven is generally not a very safe city. The landlord is terrible. She is unbelievably dishonest and disorganized. Over the 10 months that I stayed at 850 Grand Ave I had two fixes that needed in my apartment. The first one was my shower. It took her 25 days to fix it. Yes, I didn’t have a working shower for 25 days. The second problem was when the ceiling started leaking towards the end of April. It was about one month before my move out date. She never fixed the ceiling and I had to live with it for the whole month of May. I wanted to move out two months before the end of my contract. So, I offered the landlord to sublet the place for two months. She responded that I had to find somebody that signs a new contract for a full year. Yes, it is legal for her to do that but it is a very nasty trick to force me find tenants for her without paying me a bonus. I eventually found somebody for her that agreed to sign a contract for a whole year. When I moved out instead of thanking me for finding her a new tenant, the landlord deducted $ 500 from my deposit for«scratching the floor». She even admitted that sanding the WHOLE floor would cost her«at most $ 400». Later the new tenant told me the landlord never sanded the floor, anyway. Oh, and it took the landlord 45 days to send me the partial security deposit back – which is illegal. Landlords only have 30 days to send the deposit back. She also lost my contract TWICE. Once she said my contract got«water damage» on it. Another time she said she needed to add my name to the contract.(Yes, she didn’t have my name on the contract! She only had my SSN on it.) The contract had my SSN on it. What if somebody steals my SSN as a result of her losing the contract? Yes, the apartment itself is nice but the landlord is very manipulative, dishonest and extremely disorganized. Don’t get fooled by her«nice» and«welcoming» attitude at the beginning. I have lived in New Haven for 11 years. This was my worst rental experience.
