Ok, it’s a great bar, a real classic in a town that is a national treasure. The bartenders are hit and miss, and the miss mostly is the one male bartender. The poor guy is just the worst bartender in Nevada City, or Canada. One time there was 6 people at the bar, and our two empty beers were sitting so long waiting to be refilled that they became dry as a bone. When I finely got the guy to look over, I asked him can we have two more, and he said «I have other customers in front of you». We looked at each other and laughed, picked up our money and went to the Crazy Horse. If you see a guy behind the bar run!

I did not have a good experience here. Bartender was awkward and disorganized. Not sexy, dressed well or interesting. Two guys started brawling. No music playing. Not a cool dive bar at all. Disappointing! With a few changes this could be an awesome spot.

We’ve been camping for a few days, needed ice so drove to Nevada City. Then Unilocaled to find everything n found this old mining bar, super sweet bartenders n regulars offering where to eat etc. Super clean, awesome people, n local atmosphere!

In your early 20s, you frequented McGee’s. Then once you got over the drama, fights, high-​school drama, overcrowding, and terrible music, you headed down to the Mine Shaft.
Ok, the Mine Shaft has drama too sometimes, can get crowded, and has the overly-​intoxicated loud guy that the bartender is about ready to cut off. But for some reason, I just like it so much better than McGee’s nowadays. The crowd’s overall age seems to be higher than that of McGee’s, so I think I just feel more at home versus the «I just turned 21!» crowd.
Outside of the typical night out, I like that Mine Shaft has an outdoor patio, most of which is covered to provide relief from the sun or shelter from the rain. It’s also equipped with space heaters for the chillier nights.
But let’s be honest, with only a few bars in town, you know you’ll hop around to every single one of them in one night, so this review doesn’t really mean much, does it?

We stopped in here on our bikes for a quick drink after riding for the day. The bartender was super cool and really friendly. She gave us some tips on cool roads to ride and other place to stop on our travels. I like this bar and I’ll be back.

Needed a morning brew so me and the best friend headed here. Not a wide selection of beer but at the very least there were lagunitas since she and I are big IPA drinkers. Wonderful service and cool atmosphere. If you’re ever in the area, check the place out.

Stopped in here for a few shots during laid back bachelorette party weekend. Drinks were spot on and we met Frannie who was a riot! She even bought us girls a round of shots! Great little spot if definitely come back to next time we are in town!

Good prices and a full bar. Service was good and the atmosphere is very chill. It got pretty busy but we stayed for 30 mins. Lots of girl pics on the ceiling and walls. Really tacky. But I guess this is what country bars are like. sex sells?

This is my bar of choice for Nevada City. It’s the only bar that doesn’t have a cover charge… and the drinks are cheaper than the other bars in NC too. For example, a crown on the rocks is $ 5.50 at Mine Shaft and $ 7.00 at McGee’s. If you’re just going out to drink, Mine Shaft is the place to go

The Mine Shaft is a truly great establishment that serves stiff drinks at a very affordable price. Regardless of the take-​no-​crap attitude of the bartenders, this place often abounds with an eclectic mix of hipsters, farmers and tourists deemed worthy of entry (i.e. not completely blacked out or rude). I assure you the staff is not addicted to meth, and they speak perfectly acceptable English. If, like Ashley G. you are accustomed to using your passport to get drunk instead of expanding your likely diminutive world view, I suggest you head to McGees, about a block up the hill.

This has become our hangout when the kid is off to grandmas for the night. The jukebox selection is wonderful. until someone with less than awesome music tastes puts wayy too much money in it. Fran is great. kinda grouchy, but who she warms up nicely unless you are a lame-​ass then she will promptly have you removed. If you get hungry then you can order up some food from Freds!

I deem the Shaft to be the greatest dive bar in all the land. Drinks are super cheap and strong. (like you can buy a round for 5 people for under $ 20.) The naked lady posters, beer can windchime, mounted deer butt, and townies just add to the glory. The back patio is great.
P. S. Be very cautious of «the volcano.» That @#$% is dangerous.

God I miss this place– basically the only bar I go to when I’m visiting my parents in N.C. The place everyone goes to on Thanksgiving break (other than the national, where everyone ends up somehow).
Dubbed «The Office» by the locals– nothing more to be said, it’s a classic.
