Where did the breadsticks and dipping sauce go?! I heard it was Greg’s daughter who made this business decision… Either way, it was a bad one! The roll’s that were provided were old and stale and the butter was cold as ice. Again, a bad business decision. Clearly the kitchen was having an off night during our visit. This was even referenced by our waitress several times and attempted to be corrected by the free desert. The French onion soup lacked flavor… And cheese! One of our bowls was covered in cheese and looked great. The other bowl had barely any cheese and was disappointing. My $ 15 hamburger was burnt and didn’t even cover the entire bun! A major disappointment. Yes, the place was busy — but it took forever to get our food. The table next to us, whom ordered after we did, got their food much quicker. Luckily we had a great waitress who held it all together. It was very evident she was embarrassed by the evening. Thank you to her(I can’t remember her name), but she made a pretty dismal experience better. Bring back the breadsticks and the quality of food that it used to be or you’ll continue losing customers like me.

This place has been a favorite of mine since I was a teenager. Great food, great drinks, great staff. I have only had one negative experience in almost 20 years of going here and they did everything they could to make it right. I don’t live in the Nevada City area anymore but when I make my way to the area I always love to stop in for the Abbots choice fondu:)

Let’s start off with we will try again sometime soon. We experienced this place after Christmas Day and the service was so slooooooow. It took a long long time to get food and we had 3 people and the place was only half full. The food was ok, probably better if weren’t waiting so long. Steak needed seasoning which ain’t good if your a real steakhouse. I’m hoping we just caught them on a bad day because décor is awesome and it’s a neat place. Cocktails were good too

By far, the worst restaurant experience I have ever had. After food poisoning on new years eve, I contacted the restaurant to express my concern. When I spoke with jeremiah, the«manager», he decided to quiz me on the facts of food poisoning and, being a p.i.c. in the industry myself know it fell within the parameters. After a few days and no follow up from management/ownership, I checked their health inspection reports(public website) and wow! Passed by the skin of their teeth. Don’t eat here, and please don’t support businesses that simply do not care about their customers.

I am slightly torn on «how» to do this review. Do I review on location and competition in the area or my honest opinion? Let me start by saying it is a beautiful little area and the restaurant itself is very quaint. It really has no competition in the town for a restaurant that is similar. I think this is why many people rate the restaurant higher than I would rate this type of place. When the price starts creeping up to $$$…I expect more. My food is always good… not great and I have eaten here probably 15 times. I lived very close for a number of years. My steaks have always been good but I have never been a fondue fan. The two times we ordered fondue… I was disappointed both times. Maybe that is just me. Good burger but very expensive. Service is always good but the beer selection is lacking. I wish I could give 3.5 Stars.

I decided to take a road trip by myself to Nevada city to check out the area. It is a really charming town as far as it appearance goes but the majority of the people I encountered were quite unfriendly. I walked in to several restaurants and not one person asked what I would like to order until I came to Friar Tucks. It was a bit awkward because it is more of a date place, however, the waitor/waitresses immediately sat me in a place that was comfortable. The food was excellent. I ordered their fondue which was enough for one person but because I hadn’t ate all day I ordered more meat off the kid’s portion. They also made a great tasting mule, and had a delicious macadamia nut ice cream pie. I also liked the inside of the place which has good ambiance, quick service, and a casual feel to the restaurant with live music. I see people complaining about the prices but they should see the prices in the bay area =) This is a typical fondue restaurant as far as prices go.

Still a favorite in Nevada City! Bubbles and squeak is a nice mix of champagne, cheese fondue, and a wonderful variety of meat/seafood!

I have yet to have a bad meal here. And every time, the customer service is just divine! Lol. Always so friendly, welcoming, and always a pleasure. Like I said, I have been here several times. I’m surprised it has taken me this long to do a review. But hey, I guess I got caught up in the good drinks, food, and live entertainment. ;) Not a whole lot to say. The daily specials are always good! The food always comes out hot, flavorful, and delicious! From appetizers to the deserts. We live in Roseville, and we have no problem driving an hour out of the way for the great food, pleasant and intimate environment. So, looking for a casual yet classy environment, great food, good drinks, and live music on some days… this is the spot in Nevada City. ;)

Forced to return here to meet up with friends, I was again reminded of Friar Tuck’s excessively high prices, ordinary food, and negligible selection of draft beers. One simple illustration: a hamburger costs $ 15.00. If you want to pay very high prices for your dinner, I recommend that you walk one short block up the street to the New Moon Café, where the food is reliably excellent.

Please know this is a good review… We love Tucks and have been customers for over 25 years and are in at least 2 times a week. I ordered a dirty martini and ordered my standard bar snack of breadsticks and delicious dip only to find out they have discontinued … Please bring back the breadsticks. Such a staple at Friar Tucks, and part of the experience if you are a first timer… Ernie, Josh, Grant and John are amazing bartenders and great company after a long day… The restaurant is a special occasion and still our very favorite to this day. The staff is amazing … Places come and go but Tucks has risen from the ashes better than before

Their food is great… But seriously? Bring back the bread sticks and dip! They were a classic. Julie is the BEST! Thank you for the mini desert.

I was recommended to Friar Tuck’s by a friend and really enjoyed my visit. They are located in the quaint historic downtown of Nevada City, CA and are mainly an old school American restaurant with lots of steakhouse type faire. While they have a large dining room with several cozy nooks for more intimate dining, I chose to have a quick meal at the cool bar. The place is dark with lots of brick also in classic style — or at least classic modern from the 1960’s. Friar Tuck’s still has a lot of fondue on their menu, probably from the heydays of fondue in the 1960’s — 1970’s, but I settled on their standard cheese fondue setup. While the cheese was melting, I ordered a delicious gin cocktail and enjoyed the company in the packed bar. The fondue arrived in grand fashion with a bowl of bread, apples, and mushrooms for dipping. There seemed to be just enough liquid gold in the bowl to finish the dippers, although the flavor was a little less intense than a traditional Swiss fondue. Everything on the menu looked great with lots of specials. I can understand why this place is so popular. It is perfect for a drink or light meal, or even a special date night at a classic American restaurant.

My mom and I went to Nevada City last month for a girls getaway. We were told by locals that Friar Tucks was a great place for live entertainment and drinks. That it was. We had a great time. Very friendly staff, great live music and lots of people watching. We ordered food and drinks at the bar. Two salads and fondue. The drinks and salad were both great. The fondue was only so so. I have had better. I would definitely go back. Try to go early to get seats. The bar seating is limited.
