We came on the Sunday before Christmas and this place was packed! Lots of elderly folks in their best sequined Christmas sweaters. This place is interesting… there’s lots of ship themed décor. There’s a painting of an old ship captain by the register. The menu is HUGE. I recommend thinking of what you’re in the mood for and searching for that particular item rather than trying to peruse the menu for something appetizing. There’s just too much to choose from. The menu also has a lot of greek inspired items. I had the gyro omelette which was good but nothing to write home about. The milkshake I ordered definitely hit the spot. In the end, this place is average diner food. Nothing really impressive but nothing really offensive either. If you don’t care to be impressed, this is your spot.

No complaints here. … Very good food, it’s clean, bright and the service we had was exceptional. Their Greek lemon-egg soup is outstanding. Very recommended !

I have never had bland tasteless corn beef sandwich before, but I found myself salt-n-peppering the hell out of my sandwich, just to get a little flavor. I have had better, basic middle of the road family restaurant from my places. My husband’s family worships this place-not me, and the prices for breakfast are high. The wait staff are nice for the most part.

Lemon rice soup is a staple of my youth, and the breakfast has never been consistently topped. I’ll keep coming around as long as this place is here.

Food is okay but it is a little over priced for the breakfast portions. I went by myself and it was $ 13 for a breakfast skillet. The waitress also didn’t ask if I wanted a refill on my soda until she brought me the check… not normally a big deal but I sat there empty for about 15 minutes while she visited the table next to me three times to refill their pops.

We were hungry and driving outside Chicago, we had a hotel check in time around 3PM. So we thought we should keep driving till then, and then found this place around and went in for a brunch. Food was above average, and had a lot of variety compared to English breakfast type restaurant.

Always a great breakfast place in Munster. The staff is friendly and they always get you in and out in less than an hour. The food itself is always consistent, the lemon rice soup is the best around. I love being able to come in town and get a quality breakfast each and every time.

Ive Been Here A Few Times Being I Lived Down The Street. This Place Has Good Service, Decent Priced Food, & Open For Those Bad Hungover Mornings. The Chicken Noodle Is Fresh & Breakfast Looks Like Its Decorated For Magazines. The One Thing I Recommend HIGHLY Is Their Burgers !!! They Are Soo Fresh & The Fries Are Super Thick So You Get Your Money’s Worth With The Entire Meal. Thats All.

I don’t know why completely, but I really like this place. Maybe it’s the hardworking no-nonsense waitresses that call you«sweetie» or the accessible location and easy parking. The food isn’t anything to write home about, but the typical decent diner food gets the job done. In typical Greek style the menu is huge. Check out the paper placemat at breakfast for really well-priced breakfast specials. Good place to go if you’re wanting a homey midwest atmosphere, especially if you find yourself alone.

Great service always. Good food. I only eat lemon rice soup from here because it tastes homemade not artificial like most places. I love the vegetable omelet. It’s our regular place for breakfast/lunch.

This is like a Munster reunion and area classic. Everyone in town comes here and they do a very good business. The food here is what you would expect from a good breakfast place. The service is good and fast. The price is reasonable and I would recommend this place for breakfast for anyone in the area.

OMG. typical, outdated, Greek family restaurant. No décor in the 21st Century. menu is too big. The Health Dept. needs to shut them down, and force them to clean up, strating with the windows and blinds… then the bathrooms

Lemon Rice Soup. That is all. But seriously, try it. It’s the best and I always take a quart home with me, even when I order it with my breakfast. I cannot believe there are other posters who dead-panned this place — it’s the best! Yeah the décor is old, yeah the patronage matches the décor, yeah yeah yeah boo hoo this diner is superb! It’s everything you could ever want in a greasy spoon diner! The Greeks, lets face it: They can cook, and this joint is no exception. Always look at the specials of the day, they are worth every penny, and they’re relatively inexpensive! I’m always going here on Sunday mornings and granted, the place is packed, but you’ll get seated relatively quickly and the service to match! Food is awesome, staff is friendly, pricing is average, service is remarkably-fast. I love Commander’s Restaurant and recommend it to anyone who likes diners. Oh, and ‘mousaka’ is pronounced, «moose-aKa!», it’s absolutely delicioius BTW.

When you think about quality of food, quantity of food, and price, Commander hits at least 4 stars. I’m sure not much has changed since my mom was growing up in Munster and coming here in the 60s. There were so many options that looked appetizing, and I’m sure even more options would look appetizing if this was a hangover breakfast/brunch :) We walked right in on a Saturday morning around 9:30/10 with no wait for a table. Water and coffee were offered right away, but we stuck with just water. That’s actually the source of my main complaint… the water glasses were like kiddie glasses, and I drink a TON of water, so was finished with my glass in less than 5 minutes. I saw our waitress come out with the pot of coffee and fill up the same two tables’ mugs at least 5 times(no exaggeration) before I could even get her eye contact to request more water. Besides that minor annoyance, the food came out quickly and really hit the spot. I had the spinach & feta omelette with hash browns and toast, and the manfriend had the french toast. I don’t have much of a sweet tooth, especially for breakfast, but the bite he let me try was realllllly delish. We both ate, and were stuffed, for $ 17. Add a diet coke and gratuity and you have a $ 23 breakfast — not a bad deal. We’ll give it another try and hope for a little more attentive service.

I always seem to get outvoted and I’m stuck going here. Some of the waitresses are fabulous but there is one waitress who is always grouchy and who did I get yesterday? Yep… crabby patty herself. You’ll know if you get her so I don’t need to name names! Prepare to dehydrate because she won’t refill your drinks. The food is ok but I’ve had much better food and paid less for it. If you liked the 70’s…this is your place. If you prefer good food at a fair price, keep looking.

If you are looking for fancy, keep driving. The Commander is an old-school, unapologetic NWI staple. The waitresses? Been there for-ev-er. Seriously. If you came to the Commander in your youth, they probably waited on you. I suppose that could be good or bad. Depends on what they remember about you. The food here is Greek diner usual. Good soup, good club sandwiches, decent enough omelet and yummy fried mozzarella sticks and onion rings. Exactly the kind of grub you tend to crave when you hit up such an establishment. The clincher, for me, has always been the lemon rice soup. It’s amazing. Not in a Michelin star rating way, but in a homey, heart-warming, coming home sort of way. It isn’t unusual for my daughter and I to sneak in for a soup-for-dinner night out when it is just the two of us. The apple and the proverbial tree and all that. Other reviewers noted that there is still a smoking section and that the Commander is a cash only joint. Both of those things are no longer in effect. The Commander now accepts credit cards and there is no longer a smoking section(the times are a’changin’ in the NWI). One word of warning: the wait staff at the Commander still total checks by hand. Make sure to give your check the once over as math is not always one’s strongest suit. I’ve found that I’ve been over and under-charged at times. Nothing nefarious in the works, just some computational errors. Overall, the Commander is your average been-there-forever hole-in-the-wall Greek diner. Keep your expectations real and order accordingly and you will be A-OK.
