In all of Los Angeles, there’s only a few places that have a few school grade or low grade enthusiast recorders for list price. No knowledgeable advice available besides, «we sell a lot of these». Luckily we have Bill Lazar(and Greta) as close as the internet and a phone. No point and click ordering; pick up the phone and speak to a patient, knowledgeable and pleasant recorder enthusiast who will discuss your needs and help you pick the right instrument for your usage. Shipping is fast and not excessively marked up. Instruments are available for trial as long as they are returned in like new condition and not kept for longer than the trial period. Prices are competitive with generic, point and click sites like Amazon or Music 123. I’d rather have a local shop to support but lacking that I’ll let Lazar’s Early Music be my local shop.

I visited Bill’s shop for the first time today and I intend to return, soon, with a shopping list and at least one other fellow musician. His website( ) explains his inventory and provides a pricing guide for the instruments he sells, but trust me, if you’re a South Bay musician looking for a really nice instrument, go visit. He has a kind and focused attention toward what the customer is interested in, and it sounds like he’s deeply networked into the local early music scene — he remembered my recorder teacher, Tom, from a purchase several years ago, for instance. It’s a little shop, hard to spot(Suite 200 at the above address, facing outward onto N. Whisman). Looks like he has a deep inventory for the specialized range of instruments he sells. Drop by! Attentive service, deep musicianship, gorgeous inventory.
