Mount Prospect True Value

Being a petite woman, I often get a condescending/​patronizing attitude or awkwardness (ie no eye contact) from male employees when I ask questions at Lowe’s and Home Depot. Not so in this store. THIS STORE HAS GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE! (Yes, I read directions, research, and make sure I know enough background on housework to be done before I go to a hardware store. Further, I am better at house improvements than my husband.)
Since we moved in the area a few years ago, I came in several times looking for gardening materials, heating/​cooling & piping items, and looking for lawn mowers and leaf blowers. At all times, I was greeted as soon as I came in the door coupled with a «May we help you?» I tell staff what I want and I get a knowledgeable person to talk to me. At all times, I came out with the store with products I wanted & products that worked thanks to advice of knowledgeable staff here. (Research + advice from knowledgeable staff + following directions in owner’s manual DOES garner good results!)
I would like to commend an employee named «Mark» who was super helpful in helping me choose a leaf blower this week. Despite his one arm in a fracture sling, he was willing to look through boxes and shelves for me (curse of being short) to locate and compare items.

A great full-​service hardware store. So much better than the big box stores. Knowledgeable staff people are very helpful. My first stop for home repair and maintenance projects.

I stopped here to get a furnace filter.
There appeared to be two people working; one was the guy at the cash register. I asked him where the furnace filters were located and he said, «in the back on the left» and just pointed in the general direction.
This is the first time I’ve ever been to a True Value and the employee just pointed to the item I was looking for rather than personally walk me to it.
I found it odd that a mom & pop shop like this would operate this way. Typically they don’t operate like a Walmart, but today it felt that way.
Price on the filter I bought was competitive, but the customer service as just A-​OK.

Employees available and helpful. Have what I need and prices are reasonable!

There is one guy that works here and I don’t know his name, maybe I should, but he is very helpful. Ive been there dozens of times and had this man help me every single time. Its great because when you go to Lowes or Home Depot people barely know anything about what you need. Or at a nearby Ace Hardware they only have 16 year old kids working there who are constantly goofing off and checking Twitter. I always go to this store for my little needs. As another reviewer put it, its too bad this store was not a big box store that I could get everything that I needed like Doors/​Windows/​Lumber/​Drywall, etc. Very nice and friendly and if you like a personal touch I would recommend going here. Look for the guy with the glasses, or don’t, he will find you.

This is a great hardware store. Employees are helpful and knowledgeful. I wish more people would come here if they are fed-​up w the chain stores that don’t have the items that they claim to have.
