Capitol Oyster bar was a happy happy place. Food was good and service went well. We had both raw and steam oysters plus stuffed shrimp with cheese and jalapeños. Followed by a tasty catfish po’boy.

One word: GO! These oysters are phenomenal. They’re huge and fresh. Just perfect! The frog legs are delicious too, perfectly seasoned and lightly fried. The gumbo. Must have… Stop reading, and go!

If you’re looking for a unique place bursting with character, you’ve found it(hopefully…it is off the beaten path). Darlene was an absolutely amazing waitress– checked on us frequently, but was never overbearing. Had the gator tail as an appetizer– smaller than expected, but delicious. 1 lb of Royal Reds as my entrée and the frog legs for my dad– both were fantastic! Delivered quickly and full of flavor. All of that coupled with some ice cold beers made for a great dinner! Don’t let the out of the way location or rundown-looking building deter you from good seafood and service!

Been in Montgomery for 3 weeks and have been here 3 times. I absolutely love the food. The oysters are phenomenal. The fried catfish is awesome. The seafood gumbo is wonderful. The service is always great. The bartender has a bad attitude but I am not going to knock the place because of her. I love eating outside with a view of the Alabama river. Highly recommend.

Great place to spend a Sunday afternoon. We were visiting Montgomery this past weekend and my son recommended we go to Capitol Oysters for dinner Saturday evening. It’s a little tough to find but you certainly know you’re in the right spot when you get their! Unfortunately they had a 90 minute wait for tables Saturday night so we headed downtown to Wintzels. Wintzels had a 30 minute wait so we probably only saved 30 minutes and we enjoyed the oysters and fish and beer at Wintzels. So Sunday we made another run to Capitol a bit earlier. The parking lot was again packed and this time I swear Janice Joplin was inside singing. The guy at the door said it was $ 10 cover charge each. When I said OK he followed with, «you aren’t going to get a table for just the three of you.» I started wondering whether or not I was being told«politely» that I was not welcome there! Again, I said OK. The place was packed and the band was ROCKIN’! It was actually a bit loud, but then again, maybe I’m showing my age. We went out on the deck and I asked a couple if the minded if we joined them and they welcomed us to their table. Shortly afterward some people got up and we moved to the Perfect table back in the corner with a great view of the river. We started with a couple dozen raw oysters that were amazing … Super fresh and BIG … Almost too big — almost :). Try the truck stop honey brown beer — a perfect complement to the crustaceans. We then ordered some frog legs and some crab claws — again, both perfect with the honey brown. One caution, the crab claws cost $ 37 … Yikes, had I known that ahead of time I probably would have passed. If you like oysters and a laid back deck seating environment you definitely need to cross the railroad tracks and find this place.

Expensive for what you get. Food is average. Location is the best part of the whole experience overlooking the river.

I went to lunch here with a friend today. Service was quick, pleasant and positive. The prices were very reasonable. I enjoyed the atmosphere a lot. When you first pull in, it’s a little deceiving until you go inside. I’ve been to one other seafood spot here in Montgomery and this may be the one for me. This was my first visit but not the last.

First time in Alabama. First meal here. Capital Oyster Bar. They have a phenomenal band and entertainer tonight. What a way to set the mood. Great gumbo. Awesome oysters Rockefeller! And Ho! The white chocolate strawberry shortcake!!! It’s a special but has to be an indication of their other made on premises creations. Eat here!

This place is more than meets the eye. The patio is large and inviting, and even has some screens to keep the bugs out. Also, dog friendly. There is a lovely view of the Alabama River. We enjoyed our food… one of the members of my group got the wings, and he said they were delicious. My husband got a shrimp po boy, which I tried and approved of. My steamed shrimp was very good. I wish my dozen oysters hadn’t cost $ 17.95…be sure to ask about that market price! I guess I’m used to cheaper prices around this time of year. But no worries… I’d definitely go back!

Love this place. Laid back atmosphere. The kind of place locals go to and tell others about. Advertisement is by word of mouth. Our table had the Oysters Rockefellers, raw oysters, gumbo(YUM) and a seafood platter all was delicious! Enjoy!

Capitol Oyster Bar was an adventure, the river road approach had me sure I was lost. Located along Gun Island Chute, their picturesque outcropping made it easy to forget to continue berating my gps. Devotedly remote, hospitable, and hand-made, my visit felt like Sunday supper at home but stocked with a variety of taps. The staff were incredibly attentive and patient with my family of 11, their service was fast. The raw oysters were memorable, fresh, and required minimal seasoning. Crispy and hot, the fried combination platter arrived straight out the cooker and onto our table. The staff was the most friendly and conversational, we stayed much later than planned. We’ll pay another visit the next chance we get.

The atmosphere is lively although the outside is deceiving and for a seafood place they have a great burger! My only thought of a down side was most of the menu is fried.

Friendly servers and great food. I had the oysters Rockefeller and Cajun peel and eat shrimp. Both dishes were fantastic. There was a band playing which added to the experience.

If you are coming from out of town, particularly from the north, you may be quick to turn around in the parking lot and head somewhere familiar, like a chain, but you would be making a mistake. This little Shanty of a place has a lot to offer and some good food. Be selective on the apps and skip the small crab claws but load up on fried oysters instead. I had the grilled Amberjack, which was above average and my work colleague had the fried combo platter(shrimp, scallops, oysters) which was very good.

Great food. I thought the oysters and amberjack were over priced at ‘market price’; $ 18 a dozen and ‚$ 18 for a sandwich. Both were good. The staff was nice and service was prompt.

Definitely a hole in the wall joint a little off the beaten path. It’s a nice location adjacent to the river with ample outdoor deck seating. The shrimp is fantastic and comes in at least three different peel and eat varieties. Served up with ample butter. The raw oysters and oysters Rockefeller are also a treat. There are plenty of beers on tap from large industry breweries to local craft beer. They have a full service bar too, if you are in the mood for something stiffer than beer. The service was outstanding, and our table was never left wanting anything. My only beef was that they wanted us to pay an additional ten bucks cover charge for a band that played in the early evening if we happened to stay that long. We’d already spent quite a bit there and felt it was unnecessary for them to insist on it. Otherwise great experience.

When we arrived, my husband(who is way more of an adventurous eater than I) didn’t want to go in! Parking’s on the back side & it doesn’t look pretty! On our way in, the chef showed us some fresh Amberjack that had just arrived. The food was good & the patio is fantastic. The cicadas were drowning out the music!

We were able to find this place with our GPS easily, but I heard it could be a little difficult to find without good directions or a GPS. From the outside it honestly looks like a run down shack so before walking in I was already skeptical of the place. When we walked in, it looked like your typical bar and grill. We sat out back on their porch since it was a nice evening and had a nice view of the river. Our waitress was so nice and very attentive. We ordered drinks and two po’ boys and split them; one was shrimp and the other was grilled tilapia; We both liked the grilled tilapia better. Hubby also got the oysters Rockefeller which he loved. Good food, nice view, and loved the outdoor seating!
