Good service, low quality materials. My server was friendly and seemed generally happy, which is so refreshing when compared to Paul’s pantry or Carrows where they are angry and mean. Food came quickly and my ice coffee arrived nearly immediately. There’s nothing wrong with the food preparation, but they use such low quality ingredients that the results are very disappointing. There was no flavor in anything. The bacon was tiny, thin, and flavorless. Not that any restaurant uses quality bacon or knows how to cook it. That’s why I have chosen sausage for the last 2 decades, but it is a good way to identify a quality restaurant so I gave it a try. I guess they use this kind of bacon because it cooks quick. The eggs were also the cheapest eggs they could buy and the taste and texture matches. The sourdough bread was nothing special. The hash browns were fine, and I’m not sure I have ever had hash browns that were special in any way. So I guess these ones meet the expectations. In summary, chain restaurant that skimps on cost of ingredients and the results on the plate match.

The first time I went was shortly after they opened(probably in the first or second week). It was pretty quiet there due to the time of day but still, the staff and food service was super slow and disorganized. It took almost 1.25 hours to get our food from the time we sat down and there were only two of us! On top of that, the food came out cold and the prices were too high for the bland quality. We decided that we wanted to give them another shot in December 2015 since the poor first visit might have been a fluke. This time the service was much more acceptable, friendly, and better organized than before(though still seemed a little disorganized). The food came out within about 15 minutes of when we ordered. Food quality was ok but still a little overpriced for certain things. Overall, this restaurant doesn’t really stand out as a place I should frequent. Also, the location sucks. It is difficult to get into the parking lot and also difficult to leave.

Terrible! Not worth the wait. My breakfast(Banana French toast) had no flavor what so ever. Fruit was NOT fresh. Cant believe they had the nerve to serve it. Will never go there again.

First of all, I do not like writing negative reviews. Second, I do this with the hope that restaurant leadership will read my post to learn from it so they can have a chance to improve. I ordered oatmeal and fruit and a cup of coffee. The oatmeal was cold. The fruit was 4 small dried pieces of watermelon, cantaloupe, honeydew, and a strawberry. My total bill was almost $ 15. I don’t mind paying for good food. However, there is improvement needed here. If the prices are high, and the food is bad, you will lose customers. The crew should be a little more enthusiastic as well. There is competition in the area! I have given this place a few tries. I will wait a bit and give it another shot. Hopefully, there is some improvement soon. I have been to the restaurants in San Diego and they have been great. Come on team. You can do it!

Had the Border Benedict. The sauce is really good and flavorful. The carne asada is just ok. It’s a lower grade meat but its decent. The best part is the sweet corn cake. It’s very soft and rich. I had it with the hash browns those were good too. Wife had the California breakfast burrito and we shared everything. The burrito is just ok not a lot of flavor. The waiter gave us a good tip and said to try the Hot Licks hot sauce with the burrito. We did and it was much better. Overall everything was decent… not incredible or anything but a good spot for breakfast.

Too expensive for the quality of what you get. Got the Mom Omelette– flavorless except for the nasty tasting salsa on top. The salsa is so cumin and cheap chili powder heavy that it overwhelms the flavor of everything else. Hubs got Tiki French toast. Good, but not great. Requires an enormous amount of bland syrup. Service was good. Place is clean and friendly.

Breakfast is something that should be flavorful and all around delicious every time you go out for it. In most cases breakfast out is always delicious and unique to what you can make at home in this case not so much. Our server John was super nice and knowledgeable about the different choices here wile he thrived the kitchen staff fell short by serving my lady undercooked sausage and a really dry looking biscuits and gravy. My California breakfast burrito was alright considering it was packed with eggs very few of their home fries it also had 1 strip of fatty bacon that I pulled out because it was inedible and just a huge chunk of fat! The California breakfast burrito doesn’t come wet but I decided to get it that way because it’s somethings I generally enjoy very much so but not much here as the sauce had a strange zest to it that was only hidden when I ate it with the other contents of the burrito had this not worked I definitely would not have eaten it. The beans and rice they gave me were pretty blah and just unappetizing as the beans tasted as if they came from a can and the rice was a bit hard and undercooked as it would seem undercooking things must be their specialty. The free pancake they gave us with our check-in was one of the most bland ones I’ve ever had it only became somewhat decent when I poured syrup all over it to give it some much needed flavor! Overall I won’t come back here again and I would urge everyone else to do yourself a favor and don’t come here for breakfast as there is many other places in the area that are wayyyyy better and less expensive!

Nothing fancy. This is a nice breakfast place when you just want something quick and basic. I met a friend here who was on her way back from San Diego. It’s a perfect location to meet because it’s right off the 5 freeway. I like that this place has an assortment of omelets, burritos, and different Benedicts to choose from. I got the no name omelet. I ordered it with egg whites. It comes with bacon, tomatoes and mushrooms. It is delicious. You have a choice of a side and I got the fruit. It was an assortment of melons. My friend got 2 eggs, with bacon and fruit. With your entrée, you also have a choice of bread. She got a biscuit with honey and I got a bluberry muffin. We were both pleased. The endless coffee was endless and hot! They also have good pancakes and lunch items on the menu. The service is friendly and food comes out quickly once you get seated. However, there can be a wait, especially on weekends and they do not take reservations.

My friend and I were looking for a place that has brunch on the weekday, so of course we checked Unilocal.Like most people we read a couple of 5 star reviews and a couple of 1 star reviews. That’s when we came across fellow Unilocaler N.M.‘s review and we felt inspired to recreate her/his terrible review because we found it to be hilarious! When we arrived, much to our delight Walter was our server!!! Kismet! I decided to go with the traditional Eggs Benedict, because that’s what happens when you venture off and try new things, you might not like it, that’s not the establishment and certainly not your servers fault, suck it up and don’t order it again. But I’ll tell you what, my Eggs Benedict and my friends Country Benedict were delicious. Now we can get to Walter! He wasn’t awkward at all, quite the opposite, completely outgoing and very personable. To be fair he could be a bit more attentive, but last I checked there are about 13 tables and 2 servers, that’s where the bus boys could step up their game. I’m not complaining, we had a great time. Plus champaign special, yay!

I’ve had Broken Yolk Café in my bookmark for years, but for the San Diego location. Now they’ve branched out here in the OC. When coming inside the place feels new and it is spacious, perfect to bring your family along. Golly, when checking the menu I had a hard time to pick and choose because they to have quite a selection here like American tradition and South of the Border types, they do have a few healthy options as well. I’m not a cowboy western kinda of guy, but I’ve went with the John Wayne Omelette. Its smothered with chili and American cheese, mushrooms and topped with onions. You can see the gooeyness of some more cheese with your mushrooms, that was my favorite part. I really liked this choice it tasted pretty good, the chili wasn’t too bad and it was enjoyable to eat. Maybe next time and I can ask to replace the American cheese to swiss? My side with that was their home fries, its simple but went well with the Omelette. The other choice was the Monte Conte Cristo. Its grilled ham and swiss cheese sandwiched between slices of French toast, topped with powered sugar. The portions is good the French toast is thick. It’s not too savory or Frenchy, but it’s pretty good. I do recommend this café for its family atmosphere. Make sure you get some of their house coffee to compliment your meals. For those who follow sports, there are big screens on the wall. Some may say this place is pricey for some of their stuff here, but my family and I were satisfied with our visit here and I didn’t careless. Do you have the Huevos? Because this café say they do.

Although this place has all the branding and décor of a unique breakfast restaurant, it’s really just a simple diner with menu offerings not very different from, say, Denny’s. Although I would argue the quality here is superior. I kept my meal simple: they’ve got a 2+2+2 combo, which doesn’t appear on the menu(oddly enough), where you can get two eggs any style, two pancakes and two pieces of bacon. I’ve been here twice and had the same thing both times. Everything is done very nicely, although the bacon could be a little thicker. I hate those little wimpy strips that can be sucked down in an instant. Give me something substantial, please. Pricing is friendly here, so you won’t break the bank getting a decent meal. The service has been excellent both times I ate here, too.

My little niece was spending some quality time with me so she had a sleep over. Took her and my little bro to this place for brunch along with our fur baby Tank. Tips: the place is dog friendly and if you check in on Unilocal, you get a free pancake. Ordered the kids size eggs and bacon for my niece which came as expected. Pancake was good but nothing spectacular. My bro ordered their Cesar wrap. I was surprised at how good this wrap turned out. The tortilla used was really thin which I liked. The Cesar dressing was good and the chicken was so flavorful and moist. I ordered their Greek yogurt parfait and boy oh boy it was sooooo delish! The Greek yogurt was plain but the sliced bananas were perfectly ripe. The granola was so crunchy and tasted so delish. The sliced almonds paired very well with the granola and the layer of honey was just enough to give it a little sweetness. The service was great, drinks kept getting refilled and they were quick at giving me a bowl of water for my fur baby. Why the three stars? The food was great but a bit overpriced. For the food we ordered plus coffee and a lemonade, my total bill came out to $ 34. There’s a lot of comparable breakfast place around town for a much cheaper price tag.

I was looking forward to finally trying out Broken Yolk Café as I’ve heard so many good things about it. Maybe I went in with too high of expectations. The food was just okay. Really nothing to write home about. Or really to write about in this review. But what is is the price. When I saw what they were charging(which in their defense wasn’t astronomical) I was expecting pig portions. I definitely didn’t. The prices just seemed way too steep with the portions you get. Add that to the ho-hum taste of everything and it just makes it feel even less of a bargain. Wait staff was very friendly though. I will give them that. Our waiter(sorry, forgot his name) was extremely friendly and helpful. So I guess go for the customer service. Not for the meal.

I got jipped a yolk! Purchased a Groupon recently and decided to use it today for breakfast. We arrived around 9am and waited only 5 minutes or so which isn’t too bad for a Saturday. Eggs Benedict is my typical go-to when I eat out for breakfast. Instead of the traditional benedict, I decided to try the BORDERBENEDICT(carne asada instead of Canadian bacon, corn cake instead of English muffin and poblano sauce instead of hollandaise). My dish came out barely lukewarm… not a good start. The carne asada was overly peppery and seemed to be a lower grade of meat as it was chewy and not tender at all. One of the best parts of a benedict is the runny yolk, but one of my poached eggs didn’t have a yolk! Where’d it go? The corn cake was good, moist and sweet. The poblano sauce was flavorful, but a bit of a turn off since it wasn’t very warm. I think I would have enjoyed my dish more if it had come out hot. Thumbs up for the concept but thumbs down for execution. Hubby always gets omelettes and stuck with his routine by ordering the SBA(spinach, bacon, asparagus) and upgraded to egg whites and added sliced turkey. Separate from liking the addition of asparagus, he thought it was just ok, nothing special. Perhaps if we had another Groupon, we’d give this place one more shot. It’s very unlikely we’ll be going back and paying full price. Broken Yolk is open daily from 6am-3pm. Breakfast & lunch is served the entire time. Breakfast items include pancakes, crepes, French toast, omelettes, biscuits and gravy, chicken fried steak, benedicts, chilaquiles, yogurt, oatmeal and traditional egg combos. Lunch items consist of quesadillas, burritos, tacos, sandwiches, wraps, burgers, soups and salads.

3.5 stars. Hubby and I came here around 9:00a on a Saturday expecting a line, but lucky for us, there was only one couple in front of us so we only waited a few minutes for a booth(a line started to form while we were eating). Being a breakfast/lunch place, there was a lot to choose from. I got the S.B.A.(spinach, bacon, asparagus) omelet and upgraded my regular pancake to a blueberry one, and hubby got the Border Check(beef chorizo, jalapeños, jack cheese) omelet with the same blueberry pancake. I really wanted to like this place, but to be honest, my omelet was just okay. Not a lot of seasoning inside(although probably better for us who have to watch our numbers). Hubby’s omelet was folded the wrong way so he got chorizo on one side and cheese on the other(this seems to happen a lot regardless of where we eat though). Service was really nice. Our omelets didn’t come with pancakes, so we were going to order a short stack on the side to share, but our server suggested upgrading to a pancake, which I think came out a bit cheaper than the short stack(the menu says that the omelets come with choice of either biscuit, blueberry muffin, English muffin, tortilla, or toast). Nice save, young man. The manager(I think) came by each table to make sure everything was okay too.

Had breakfast here this morning… This was my first time at any Broken Yolk restaurants. The location has only been open for one week, and ran really smoothly! There was a 25 minute wait when we arrived at 9:15am. The place was PACKED! It was raining, so everyone tried to crowd into the front entrance and it was pretty hard to move around. Once we were seated, our waitress came pretty quickly. My three friends all ordered omelettes, I ordered the breakfast tacos. My plate was definitely the smallest, and I left there not completely full. The manager came over at one point and asked me if everything was ok… my plate had already been cleared and he was worried I didnt get my food. Very nice. Someone ordered the $ 29.95 Iron Man Breakfast Challenge meal, and man that thing was insane! He struggled with it, and gave up a little less than I would say 2⁄3 of the way through. Its a 12 egg omelette with tons of filling and chili on top, hashbrowns across half the huge tray and two HUGE biscuits. The kid was STRUGGLING. Our waitress said in the week they have been open he is the second to try. Crazy! I honestly would have given 5 stars but it took us about 20 minutes to pay. I think we can take part of the blame, as we were a group of four and should have asked for separate checks, but we did not. The waitress said she was not able to take cash at the table, so we had to go up front to pay. There was trouble with the receipt machine and it kept jamming, but also I think the cashier didnt get the bills right. Without getting into all of the details, I dont think it was done right in the end, I know I shorted a few dollars in my change, but then it was recharged, I really dont know. I hope my two friends who paid with credit cards dont have enormous charges. There was a HUGE line waiting to pay as well, as it took so long. I definitely want to go back though and try other things!
