I love this place. This was the first sushi place I went to when I came back from my 5 years in New Jersey. Loved it, food was always great, service usually good. Seems a hair too formal to me now, and a bit smaller portions for the money than I get at the other big two in town, Matsuba and the new one Daihido, or something like that. Since economy is still part of my life, I have to look at all sides of a meal. Taste, quality, quantity. A great place, just not the best in town, nor the best value.

The shrimp fried rice is incredible! The lunch prices are great, but the dinner prices are a little high.

The waitress cursed in Korean because she didn’t think I’m Korean. She thought I can’t speak Korean, but I understood bad words what she said.

The sushi rolls are acceptable, for South Bend, though you’re better off with supermarket sushi for the price. Avoid the noodle bowls at all costs. Top Ramen made in your college dorm is better than that garbage. As noted by many other reviewers, service is atrocious. Even by the area’s low standards, this place is a total fail.

Just had a great lunch at Toyo Grill. Lots of wonderful bento lunch choices for around $ 10. Very relaxing experience. The food was delicious. Will definitely come back to try other bento options.

My fist sushi ever was here in ’95! I enjoyed it then and still do today. Not too sure at this point how stellar this place is, but thought I would store the note; sorry for a lacking review, I do better most of the time.

Atrocious service, or lack thereof… The two dishes I tried(once carryout) were not authentic Korean. Worst rice I have encountered anywhere. The Kimchi was nasty.

This place had pretty good food. The golden scallops were interesting, the sushi was fresh and tasty, and the bento box was a good deal. However, the service was a bit spotty and slow… apps came out after soup and salad, one entrée came out way before the other, etc.

It’s been a while since I stopped by here. Though to try them again. Decent sushi waaaaay overpriced for this area, it’s south bend people let’s be real, probably will be another couple of years by the time I try it again there are better places in town that have good sushi for reasonable price.

I really like this place! My husband and I have been here several times and have not been disappointed once. We have not tried any of the Korean dishes but have had many of the rolls and hand rolls. The atmosphere is good; simple and clean. I like getting the group options so I can have a variety. The presentation is good and the prices are reasonable. Will definitely be back!

My experience there was horrible. Food wasn’t worth the price. Service was slow. I asked for a vegetarian dish and they gave me oysters. Not worth it.

Food is overpriced and honestly not that good. Maybe I’m spoiled since I come from Atlanta where there are Asian restaurants galore, but if I pay $ 15 for a dish, it better be good. Service is slow, meals are careless, and the atmosphere is not that great. The salad you get before meals is trash. Side dishes are stingy. Never coming back again.

A great sushi place in South Bend. The food is reasonably priced and service is fast. I’m a sushi lover, and theirs isn’t the best ever, but it’s pretty damn good. They’re usually not very busy, but don’t let that fool you. I’d skip a 1 hour wait at bonefish grill any day for toyo.

Koreans will tell you: this is the best place to get Korean food in the area. The Korean menu selection is smaller than others, but the food is authentic. If you have a special request, it doesn’t hurt to ask. The sushi and other dinners are good, too. The catch here is that the service is always slow, so don’t go if your time is limited.

Don’t let the smallish location scare you away. Food is excellent and the portion sizes are crazy big. I’ve been coming to Toyo Grill since 2002 and I’ve never had a single issue. At times they can be busy, but that isn’t a bad thing. Give it a try!

We’ve tried this place a few times. The sushi is pretty good. But this place is really known for its korean dishes, especially the BBQ Kalbi. Whenever we go here, we have to keep in mind that it’s pricey… about $ 20-$ 25/person if you want to get full. We’ll definitely continue to go back.

I love this place. I have traveled and eaten sushi all over the USA and in other countries. This really my favorite. I am sushi purist. When I go somewhere that just as sushi on the menu but, it is not what the restaurant is about, such as, Hana Yori Japanese Steak House, I do not expect them to go thru the fish fast enough to keep fresh inventory. At Toyo the fish is always fresh. This is truly the best sushi in the area. The tempura is great. The korean dishes are fabulous. You cannot go wrong here. Their salmon skin hand roll is the best I have had ANYWHERE! And try the bi bim bop, on of my other faves!

Good sushi. Nice wait staff. They close far too early however, and I have definitely had better sushi.

Service is consistently slow and unskilled. I’ve had many memorable dinners at toyo, the food is fresh and well prepared. Not the absolute best sushi I have ever had, but incredible for the midwest. Toyo is good food at a great value.

Oh the Toyo Grill, I remember the many ND Japan club dinners, the dates, the memories of the place when I was a student at ND from 01-’05. I still can look back on this place and smile, kind of like a warm memory that you can never forget. Anyways, this place is korean owned, but the quality is pretty good considered its in South Bend. I enjoyed both the japanese sushi and korean dishes. I recalled the BBQ Kalbi was delicious as well. Its a must visit for sure. I would like to return again to for old times sake.
