I stopped by this shop whilst waiting for some friends to meet up for a happy hour. It had been a rather mediocre day and I wasn’t feeling particularly bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. Enter the Fairy Godmother. This woman beckoned me into her store(which is totally not an Uptown thing to do) and foisted a plate of cookies onto me at which point, my day began to turn around. It seems like she sells a lot of giftware-type stuff which is great if you need something for a girlfriend. Plus a lot of it is kind of sassy/tounge-in-cheek, which is always a good thing. However, I don’t know that it would make me a regular customer(I don’t purchase giftware that often). But if I needed that clever sort of thing that no one else had, it would definitely be a first-choice sort of stop.

This merry little shop comes complete with an honest-to-goodness Fairy Godmother in the person of Terre Thomas. Terre’s store moved from 38th and Grand to Calhoun Square in the fall of 2008, and the neighborhood she left hasn’t been the same since. Her quirky presence literally radiated out the door every day. One day you’d see her out on the sidewalk sitting in her rocking chair and chatting with passerby, the next she’d be handing out ginger cookies and pink hot chocolate. When she heard there was no tenant moving in after her, she left curtains and silk flowers behind so there’d be something besides vacant storefront windows facing the neighbors each day. *This* is the kind of person I want to do business with. Fairy Godmother is now located just inside the Hennepin Ave /Lake Street entrance to Calhoun Square. You can’t miss her shop; she had the street wall mural from her old store reproduced and mounted outside her new space. Inside the shop you’ll find a great collection of greeting cards, unique gifts, spiritual treasures, and surprises tucked into every corner. For you«tingle» fans, visit Fairy Godmother online.

There is a huge assortment of cards here, & I’m almost of the mind that I need to go in with only the cash I need for the card I need because I always leave with many more than I intended to purchase. When my niece was born this summer, the owner, Terrie Thomas, helped me put together a gift basket for my SIL& baby, providing a basket(which was not part of her inventory, she just had some around)-new mom book, baby sign language book, big wood letters of the baby’s initials, that kind of stuff. She’ll direct you to things you might not have thought of in a nonpressuring way. I appreciate the comfy couch & the basket of toys for my 4 year old to play with while I browse-that definitely extends my visits to the store. And yes, as Mark B. noted, there are tasty ginger cookies & peppermint tea proffered when you come in. Last, but not least, there is a bowl of fresh water outside the store all summer for thirsty dogs-much appreciated by mine.
