FANTASTIC!!! They have a special on Mon. Tues. & Thurs. The food is wonderful, fresh and priced well. I will be back on my next trip to Milwaukee.

My Wife and I just ate here and while the girl at the front seemed nice enough, the waitress seemed rushed the entire time we were in there. There were only two tables including us at the time, so it seemed a bit weird. The real problem though was the food. I always tell my Wife that you can tell how good a sushi place is going to be by the miso soup you get before hand, this has only failed me once. The miso came out and honestly, I thought perhaps I had eaten gum or a mint before hand and forgotten about it, because the soup had no flavor and I was really trying hard to figure out why I couldn’t really even taste any salt. I had a bad feeling about that, then we had our bento boxes come out. The shumai was decent, the tuna nigiri was terrible, very cold and flavorless, the white tuna nigiri was a little better but about the same and the spicy tuna roll(which I feel is hard to get wrong) had nothing to add any texture. no celery or tempura flakes. So, it was just mush and the flavor was mediocre. Overall it was not a good experience and made me feel sick. I can’t believe this place got 4.5 stars on Unilocal with so many reviews, maybe it was just our experience?

First the service — The name of Waitress was Jenny. She works on Tues and Thurs only. Her service is as good at I got at the Shanghai Palace in the Peninsula(5 start) hotel, in Chicago. Jenny was extremely friendly, offered suggestions and was superb at service. There was another waitress, whose name I don’t know — whom I saw walking around, a bit indifferently. On my second visit, I tried their house salad. The dressing was excellent. Often, at Japanese restaurants, the dressing is too gingery not that great. My three local favorites, for excellent salad dressing are, in the order of my preference: Kawa, Kyoto and Koi. All are very good. Kawa is, in my opinion, the best. I tried the beef medallions. They were very good. The spicy crab sushi was excellent. Since it is very close to my office, I am looking forward to many more lunches at Koi.

1st time here and was impressed. I stopped in and ordered take out. Waitress/server was very helpful with showing me the menu. I had a couple rolls and a sushi sampler plate. I had a Japanese beer while I waited at their small bar. They have a flat screen as well. Nice environment especially in a strip mall. Great fresh food… I will definitely go back. I need to check out the specials during the week that a Unilocaler had mentioned.

Ordered 4 types of sushi rolls with some spring rolls, and the only negative I have is that it took about an hour and a half to be delivered(we live in greenfield). The sushi was so fresh and absolutely delicious! Definitely love having a place near that can deliver it!

I carefully searched for a place to enjoy dinner on the night before my flight out of MKE. I was staying at the Clarion and checked out every restaurant in the area. I can’t WAIT to go back when I’m in town for my next flight. The pricing was fair, the sushi was fantastic, and the service was excellent. The«tuna amazing» is aptly named. Amazing.

I loved this place! I wanted sushi, they gave me sushi. I needed seaweed salad, they gave me seaweed salad!(It was above average too!) The sushi didn’t seem any less expensive, but I wasn’t going all out on this visit. I would be happy to return and… go all out. I love me a sushi food coma. To be more specific on one point, the fish itself, was a bit… mushy. Still haven’t found the golden ticket for sushi in Milwaukee, but I’m happy to eat here, at this obvious Silver ticket winner.

This place is good. And well priced. I found out about this place from a former south-sider who drives all the way from his current home of PEWAUKEE to get this sush. That spoke to me. I mean, this place is in a(insert chris Farley voice) strip mall down by the airport! I was told to come on a Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday. These are the three«special» days of the week. The most expensive specialty roll was 8.95. You read that right, folks. That cheap. 2 dolla miso and buy one get one large hot sake was also appreciated. And this sush was good. I didn’t feel like I was getting a tapeworm. It tasted fresh. Maybe location by the airport is beneficial for all that seafood that’s flown in.

Milwaukee is not the first place I’d think one would find good sushi — but after traveling all day, after landing at the airport and making our way over to our hotel — we consulted Unilocal for a local restaurant overview and discovered that KOI was right next door to the Courtyard we were staying at — and it was highly rated. So in we went! I ordered a small Sake, a small bowl of Miso soup and a platter of Sashimi: Two pieces each of Salmon, Tuna, Yellowtail, Scallops, and Smoked Salmon, plus an order of Dragon rolls. Overall, all of the fish tasted good and was very tender. Miso soup was your solid, every-day Miso soup, and the Dragon rolls were rather average. Service was good. I’d eat here again.

Surprisingly good quality fish! Great visual presentation too. Music was meh — but food was good! Service is decent too. Not crowded when we went.

I have a great deal of love for Koi. I’ve eaten here probably 15 times and I get lunch delivered to work more often than I’d like to admit. Their food is very comparable to Fujiyama, but their prices are slightly better and I prefer the atmosphere here.

I travel often and just here overnight. The front desk at the Marriott nearby recommended this place for the excellent sushi and I have to say it’s very good. The menu features a wide variety of sushi, sashimi, and some creative rolls. The guys behind the counter tonight are Chinese but do a great job with a decidedly Japanese menu! I’m told the restaurant is about two years old. The interior — dodgy with drop ceilings, little artistic flair, no music except what I hear coming through the kitchen proper. The tile floor around the sushi bar where I’m seated happens to be the exact tile o put in my kitchen in the 90’s(not good now) Not sure what that says about my taste. The place is clean however and I was greeted professionally. And what this place lacks in ambiance is addressed by solid food quality.

This is an OK sushi restaurant. For Wisconsin it is very good but since I have traveled to other places to me this is average. Came here for a friends birthday dinner. Service was good but she was very robotic and just wanted to get us our food and push us out. The sushi was good. We ordered a variety of rolls, sashimi and side dishes. All of the food was presented great and looked exactly like the menu pictures. I was not amazed or floored but I would return, since there are not many sushi restaurants in the area.

Sushi in a strip mall? Sounds just as bad as gas station sushi… but wait a minute I keep coming back here to eat and I rated this place at four stars. Koi doesn’t have a ton of curb appeal but when you walk in it has a distinct Japanese feel with a quaint sushi bar in the back. Almost every time we eat here, there is at least one table of Japanese people which is a good sign. They have some great deals for lunch and Monday and Thursday for sale priced rolls. My favorite is their Rock ‘n’ Roll with shrimp tempura, masago wrapped in soybean paper with eel sauce. For lunch I will typically get one of their bento boxes for $ 10 which is a steal. Their Gyoza is my ‘go-to’ appetizer as well as the Negimaki. Most of their meals come with the standard miso soup and house salad. The miso soup is on par with most restaurants. The house salad is your standard iceberg lettuce with a few veggies and dressing… nothing spectacular. The owners and staff are so sweet and accommodating. When they first opened I talked with them at length and recommended delivery to Bay View. They listened and I am so excited that they deliver now! I can now order sushi and have it delivered while I kick back and watch TV… life couldn’t be better!

Great deal if you go on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Thursdays(special price menu items). Rolls are tasty and aren’t over-stuffed with rice, recommend the Spicy Salmon Roll and the Angry Bird Roll. Fast, friendly service and clean tables. Sure to visit again in the future!

I was telling a foodie co-worker about the fantastic find that is Koi Japanese Restuarant and he was skeptical when he heard its location was a small strip mall on Layton Avenue. I’m here to convert all you doubters into believers, however, because Koi is Aaahhh-Maa-Zing! I went with a group of friends on a Monday night, where Sushi Rolls, dinners and a number of menu items are on special. The special menu is also offered on Tuesday and Thursday nights, I think. Most of my friends got two or three rolls of sushi, and I watched them grin with glee when their beautifully prepared and artfully arranged huge patters of food arrived. Myself, I was jonesin’ for something a little different. I rarely order an entire dinner, and the Chicken Tempura dinner sounded wonderful so I went for it. I first sampled some Miso Soup that was good, but I can’t say I am overly knowledgeable about Miso. I also got a salad that had Americanized, rather than Asian, salad ingredients of iceberg lettuce, cucumber and tomato. I did enjoy the special dressing though. Everyone at the table oohed and aahed when my dinner came. It was literally a mountain of food. About seven jumbo-tron pieces tempura vegetables(mushrooms, broccoli, asparagus, sweet potato) were the base for a tower of six fabulously huge fingers of chicken tempura battered. It was delicious and satisfied my craving. I took my leftovers home and had them for lunch the next day. My co-worker was ooohing and aahing as I heated them up. Wait til I tell him they deliver to his neighborhood!

The lunch specials are amazing. 3 rolls for $ 10 including miso soup or a salad? YES! I walked in at 2:30pm, got seated at 2:31pm. The lucnch specials«expire» at 2:30pm. I asked really nicely if I could still have them and they said yes. You really can’t go wrong with any of the sushi rolls. I had the salmon with avocado, tuna and eel with avocado. I love the eel sauce. The sushi is not as big as fujiyama but good enough.

Very good sushi! After a few bad experiences at fugiyama(sp?) I was hoping to find somewhere new. I think we found it! However it is on the pricy side but that’s also because we ordered more rolls then our stomaches could handle. Tips: Buy one get one free saki Angry bird Godzilla Eel sauce on the side Do not get the young Asian lady waitress she was awful and ignored us all night. Be sure to ask for Christian.

My plan for the evening was simple: have a healthy dinner, complete a work project, and run 3 miles on the hotel treadmill. It seemed fortuitous that there was a sushi restaurant, the epitome of healthy cuisine, located across the street from the hotel. Even more fortuitous was that the place had received favorable ratings from some of my trusted Unilocal friends. I strolled over to the restaurant and was surprised to find it to be very basic: a strip mall joint with not much Japanese décor. While awaiting the waiter I decide to browse some of my friends’ Unilocal reviews and discovered the special rolls were repeatedly discussed. No one talked about healthy sashimi I had planned on ordering. The menu also indicated that the rolls were specially priced on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. I decided to forego the sashimi and order a couple of the rolls. My modified plan was to spend a little extra time in the gym for indulging in the less healthy meal. When the tattooed, pierced blond waiter showed up to take my order, I asked for a Godzilla Roll and a Tuna Amazing roll. He immediately commended my choices stating that they were his favorite and third favorite rolls. I, of course, wanted to know which one was his second favorite. He was quick to answer, «the Angry Bird Roll.» Changing my order to include this roll, I also requested hot sake. My waiter informed me that it was buy one get one free night on the sake. Score! The presentation of the rolls was nice. The colorful Godzilla Roll consisted of tuna, salmon, and white fish wrapped in seaweed and deep fried, and topped with roe, eel sauce and a spicy yellow sauce. The Angry Bird was not quite the same feast for the eyes but no less tasty. It included spicy tuna, king crab, and avocado wrapped with seaweed and topped with shrimp tempura and a wasabi sauce. The two roll meal was quite filling and the BOGO sake gave me a healthy buzz. I was in no condition to work out or finish my project after that dinner. Despite having my simple plans completely ruined, I enjoyed my dinner and know I’ll be returning to KOI very soon. On that visit, I’ll not be entertaining any ambitious plans of ordering healthy sashimi.
