Italian hot chocolate was amazing! Grilled cheese and chili both pretty good. The layout is a little confusing, but worth a stop for the hot chocolate if you are in the area.

Awesome sandwiches, the flying pig is my fav. Great smoothies as well. Their handmade marshmellows are killer, that is if they have any!

I have to say that I haven’t tried their name sake, but the turtle latte there is really good. They could probably have a few more marshmallow items, but it’s a good little coffee shop.

I was expecting something more in terms of the marshmallow selection, although their sandwich and coffee menu does look impressive. However, the espresso marshmallow dipped in chocolate was delicious! Not cheap, but definitely worth trying.

Tucked away«underground» this little café offers the best hot chocolate that Loudoun has to offer. Be warned, it’s ITALIAN hot chocolate, which means it’s thicker and richer than anything you may have ever tasted. This is no Swiss Miss! Topped off with their amazing, homemade coffee or peppermint marshmellos you simply cannot go wrong. It’s the perfect way to warm up in the winter!

A friend and I stopped at Swedenburg Vinyard and decided to visit Middleburg too. I saw the Mello website and was excited to find it. It’s tucked away on one of the side streets in the town. It’s a cute place, but the website made it appear to be this whimsical funland. Not quite that. Just a little café with a few bags of marshmallows. I expected much more mellos. I bought a bag of their home made mellos($ 4 for 4 cubes). I thought they were tasty. A little on the sweet side, but I liked it. I also had a cup of lemon tea that was good. It’s a cute place to stop by if ever visiting Middleburg.

The cosmic cupcakes are wonderful– perfect amount of sweet, icing is light, and the cupcake is almost a cross between angel food and regular cake. Drinks are also delicious. Service can be slow, but the food is worth the wait. Prices are on the high side though, which prevents me from stopping in more frequently.

Descend into the labyrinth and be rewarded! The basement digs, while rustic and charming in that Middleburgy colonial sort of way, leave something to be desired — it’s hot in there, crowded if more than two people show up, and I genuinely fear for the heads of patrons of tall stature. But it’s all worth it for the delicous hot chocolate and lattes, and cheap, tasty sandwiches(including several options for the veggies). I like the Papa Bear, with red onion, pepper, lots of melty cheese and rosemary foccaccia. For around $ 7, you could do much, much worse for lunch. I want to try the potato salad(with gorgonzola, they say) next time. They have a small, but well-chosen supply of cheeses, sodas(try Old Dominion Brewing’s delectable root beer, made with honey) and packaged food to round things out. Alas, the luscious-looking homemade marshmallows aren’t vegetarian-friendly, but this is a fine lunch stop for sure.

I have to admit that I am writing this review based pretty much on their hot chocolate alone. Which is extraordinarily delicious. On a freezing winter afternoon, I will stop by here and pick up a cup of their thick, rich, Italian hot chocolate topped with a peppermint marshmallow to warm me up again before the drive back to the city. The marshmallow is a treat in itself! I have tried the ham and cheese panini. Not bad, but nothing extraordinary. I would come in here for the sweets alone, though, and not even feel a little bit bad about shelling out something around $ 1 for a marshmallow. They are just that good. =)

UPDATE July 12, 2008. Went to Mello Out today. Shocked by the lack of effort with the paninis and sandwiches. Literally had one piece of meat per type.(3) slices, 1 ham, 1 turkey and 1 Italian meat. Ridiculous for the price. This went for everyone in the party. Skimped on chicken salad also. Great desserts, but something can be said for just being down right cheap to your customers. Very disappointed.

Cute place. Slow service. Tasty and creative sandwiches though.
