Compared to the other art fairs, the work shown at Red Dot and Spectrum was superficial, lacked depth and was mostly eye candy. Unfortunately, I’ll never get back the 40 minutes of my life spent at these two fairs.

I’ve been to a lot of the different gallery offerings for Art Basel /Miami Art Week over the years, and I am very familiar with Red Dot. I have to say that I was not impressed with the much of the galleries represented there. Art is subjective, of course. So I would say Red Dot is not at the top of my list of art shows to see, but if you are going to visit Red Dot; just make sure you’re also seeing some of the other tents that week. At least this way you’ll get a broader idea of what is out there in the contemporary art world. Oh, and leave your car at home!

Loved REDDOTARTFAIR, very impressive works of art and well priced as well… Beautiful opening night… Looking forward to next show this year! It was my first time attending and I was truly impressed by all the art fairs… wow… and very talented artists… Enjoyed exhibiting my work and met some amazing people…

Love the smaller venues during art week in Miami. especially all the lovely shows in the Wynwood Dist. This show, albeit commercialized art, had some great strengths and some great weaknesses. But it’s smaller venue size made it far more comfortable than Art Basel. Plus, the staff in the booths were more friendly and informative. In fact, many of the artists attend as well, which made it far more exciting for me than many other shows.

My love of art is well known in these pages — and to folks who know me offline as well. It is no surprise that during Basel I would stop by one of the mega exhibits. and I am talking MEGA. The only reason I am not giving the 5th star is because I had no time to see the complete exhibit(as I had a logistical issue with my car parked by another gallery :/) Reading the other review, it seems that safety blanket was at least partially shed this year. One of the first paintings was an abandoned run down old church. Next bump in the culture war was a set of erotic photographs, where the photographer /self-portraiteer was there. I had the very pleasant opportunity to chat with her too! The balance of the art I saw were Korean and Chinese paintings, as well as talking to some of those gallerists. Check out a couple of performance artists there too, such as the roving philarmonica player and the zombie angel!

By itself Red Dot would have been a nice show, but situated in the Design District among Scope and Art Miami, it was certainly the weakest of the three. Across the board I felt the art was safe, and therefore a little blah. Nothing was wild, offensive, or took any chances which means nothing was amazingly original or shockingly good. It’s worth checking out if you’re in the area and have the time, but I would not put this show on the top of your list… you’re better off spending more time at Scope instead!
