This morning, after an all night flight from Brazil, the first thing we did, after sleeping, was go to Abuela’s Cuban Kitchen. We sat down and when the waitress arrived, my friend casually asked her if she was from Cuba — to start a conversation. She said yes. He then said how exciting it was that Americans could now travel there and how he wanted to go. Her response? «My people are starving. I would never travel to Cuba. You can if you want.» Something like that. We said nothing, stunned. When she left we looked at each other and said the same thing: She should let«her people» starve before driving opportunity and resources into the country to help them? Now this has nothing to do with the restaurant, but, like her attitude, the restaurant is stuck in time. Heavy rice, light beans, very salty, dated Cuban food from a decade ago. From past breakfast visits, the eggs are made anyway the kitchen wants to make them. If you say anything, they make them the same way again. Like Cuba. At the end of the meal, I tried to ask for the check which took 20 minutes. Why? Because the three waitresses and two waiters in the entire restaurant were setting a four top, obviously for VIPs and with scared and slightly confused looks on their faces, kept placing and then moving the stemware and cutlery and ignoring the rest of the restaurant. As if Castro was sitting down to eat.

Mojitos here are exactly what they should be… very delicious! Nice dinning and friendly staff, not to mention great food makes this small but well equipped Restaurant a fantastic place to visit. it can get busy but the wait time is never stretched out like at other nearby eateries. There is street and lot parking and you hardly ever have to drive around looking for a spot. Coconut Flan & Tres Leches desserts are awesome. If you love cuban food you wont be disappointed!
