Absolute waste of money and time. The salsa taste like Burger King ketchup mixed with the onions from a Big Mac.

This place was a waste of money… The food was disgusting I regrettably ordered the bayou chimichanga. It had the most fishy taste to it. The food had cajun/creole seasoning which I do think could work if they were properly used. In this case they were not. There is NOTING authentic about this restaurant. Our server named Jessica however was the sweetest most kind waitress ever. Out of all the the staff she was the brightest in the place. So please think twice before you spend your hard earned money here. They did comp my meal but my husband also did not eat his plate.

I’ve been a fan of Cucos since I was a teen ager. My favorite is the Macho Nachos. They are one of the only Mexican restaurants that use black beans(much more flavorful) instead of refried beans. While I do make a point of dining at Cucos when I’m on the south shore, I’ve noticed they have changed their salsa recipe & several others. The chimipoquitos used to have a lot more meat inside, now they are mostly the thick fried shell. Not nearly as good as they used to be. I wish they’d bring back the old Cucos…:(

I confess, I was raised on Cuco’s. While I agree that the place is not radiating in the glory of its former self, on a good day you can get a plate of what makes Cuco’s worth trying. I like this place. its practically a dive, but I dont care. ifyou want a laugh, there is a TV mounted on the wall with the stand still attached. It’s moronic. I like it even though sometimes they disappoint me. I keep hoping some new owners will scoop it up before the current ones run it into the ground.

Bad service and bad food. I’d say it was the worst salsa ever but it was too much like tomatoe juice to be considered salsa.

Don’t waste your time. Authentic it is not, I would rather drive thru Taco Bell than lose $ 35 again. Moved here from South Texas(5 minutes from Mexico) and this was a mistake to be our first Mexican food experience in the area. Taco shells were old, meat had no flavor.

I love Mexican food. I don’t indulge often but years ago, I was Cuco’s fan. Used to enjoy apps and cocktails at happy hour as well as flavorful meals. The fried ice cream was devine. Over recent years, though, the restaurant has deteriorated in both service and food quality and I believe its time I give up. Last night, my husband, son and I went for dinner. There were only four occupied tables when we arrived yet we were sat immediately next to a family of four so closely that we could hear their conversations easily and had to whisper if we wanted our conversations private. Then the waiter delivered chips and salsa and took our order. What used to be tasty salsa was completely void of flavor. Seriously, could have dipped the chips in water for the same effect. The chips, formerly warm and fresh are now greasy and unsalted. My husband received a beautiful plate as did my son. I waited… a full five minutes longer for nachos. My meal finally arrived… steak and chicken on chips, covered in half melted shredded cheese. Thats it. Pick up a chip and the toppings promptly fall to the plate as there was nothing keeping them on the chip. The meats were not marinated or seasoned, just dumped on the chip and covered in cheese, popped in the microwave or under a heat lamp and brought to the table. There were a bunch of jalapeño slices in the middle… but they were dried up and didn’t help the flavor of the dish at all. Had we seen a manager, I would have voiced my opinion there but no one, not even the waiter asked if everything was ok.

This used to be one of Metry’s best kept secret for decent, affordable Mex. I recently ordered take out of my favorites only to find the food quality has taken a serious nose dive. I threw most of it away. Even the salsa was awful. I will never eat there again and don’t recommend it. Nola has too many other good places to eat. Casa Garcia is a mile down the road.

This was the chain that brought Tex-Mex food to most of the South outside of Texas. In the early 1980’s you might have gotten your first exposure to Tex-Mex at one of these joints. I had my first taste of a margarita and tequila at Cuco’s(at least at the time I thought it was tequila but I’m not sure they really use tequila in their margaritas). Most of the food tastes like they have been storing it in a deep freeze from the 80’s and just reheating or re-frying it. This place was everywhere like Applebee’s back in its day but now this location and one in Hattiesburg are the only one’s left I know about. Sadly enough the one in Hattiesburg is probably slightly better than this one. I don’t know how much more life this place has if it doesn’t do some serious changes.

We walked in on a weekday night and quickly realized it wasn’t going to be a quiet dinner. The place was full of kids and parents. I hadn’t seen it this crowded in a while. Then it dawned on me… the sign outside… it was Kids Eat Free night. Oh well… We were seated right away, in the adult section(at least an area where there were no kids nearby). The waiter was there quick enough with the usual chips and salsa and to take our drink order. I ordered the Burrito Grande which is a half beef, half chicken burrito. Enough to be a meal by itself, although it comes with the ever present rice and beans. The beef side was decent with a chili like sauce over it. I don’t know what they poured the chicken half. The special sauce almost tasted like a bad sweet and sour sauce you would find in a cheap Chinese restaurant. It was one of the few times in recent memory I couldn’t eat something and did not want to bring it home. My wife ordered the Cancun classic(chicken burrito and a beef taco). She had no complaints about the food. It was a large helping of everything, so she left behind a fair amount of the flour tortilla as well as most of the beans and rice. We keep going as my wife remembers it as the Cucos of old, not the frayed belle it has become. You become accustomed(spoiled?) by the new restaurants and the constantly renovated franchises. And then you walk into an old favorite like Cucos and the contrast is startling and vivid. Not that it is dirty, just care worn. On a positive side the prices are quite reasonable. It is kid friendly. They advertise a reasonable lunch special, $ 6.45 for 9 different meals.

Whatever happened between the old Cuco’s on Veterans(no ACME Oyster House) and this place, it must have been bad. Dinner here made me feel like abstaining from eating for two days. The wait staff seemed embarrassed to serve what they were bringing out of the kitchen. Everything came out on a ‘hot plate’ meaning that they threw everything into the oven until the table was done with appetizers. I cannot understand how you could be a GM or kitchen staff and allow this kind of junk to come out to the table. When you have food that comes out with lettuce and diced tomatoes that BAKED on the plate in the oven you have a problem. That problem is that you clearly do not care at all. Maybe you could do appetizers and some drinks here(although NOTHING is on draft)… but don’t get the queso it turns back into a solid block of what seemed to be American cheese as it cools. The waiter basically apologized when he saw none of us at more than a few bites and had no interest in taking anything home. I paid the bill, tipped the waiter cash, and won’t see the inside of that place again.

It was a Sunday, about 6 pm. We were seated right away. Actually, you could say the place was almost empty. The restaurant’s décor is dated and could be freshened up. Our waiter was very attentive, came over several times asking if we needed anything Salsa and chips good, what you would expect from a Mexican restaurant, nothing to rave about. I had the Fajitas, chicken. It was good, no complaints. My husband had the chicken & cheese enchilada. It was alright, no complaints, but nothing to brag about. Main reason we came was that we had a WYES buy one get one free offer. Otherwise we would gone elsewhere.

So I suggested to a friend that we have lunch here because it said in the Gambit that they have nachos to die for. They had me at nachos. I was immediately embarrassed when I entered the place and saw it was a poor man’s Chili’s. That’s pretty bad. Then the salsa was so bad that I didn’t scarf down the free bowl of chips and when does that ever happen? I went for the bean and cheese nachos and added the chili con queso. What, I love fake cheese. I was sad to see that the nachos here are like at Fridays where there are like 15 chips and each chip is individually made. They were alright but I was expecting a feast by the description in the Gambit. Afterwards I saw another table ordered what I think was actually called the mountain nachos and that really was a mountain. Like 3 pounds of nachos. Just another case of a mistaken order, sigh. We all make mistakes right?

One of the few remaining outposts of the chain that once spread Tex Mex mediocrity throughout the southern United States. The place is dingy. While by no means the worst Tex Mex I have ever consumed it ain’t real good. The salsa tastes fresh from a jar. The chips are way to greasy. The food in general is more or less average. On a positive side the prices are quite reasonable. Bottom line: you may have to look a little but there are better options for Tex Mex out there.

Remember years ago how there were Cuco’s all over the place? Now they are few and far between. Ever wonder why? It’s because they aren’t very good. The salsa was kinda like ketchup, chips were crisp but you could see the grease on them. The fajitas were fair, the chicken was good but the side of rice tasted like rice-a-roni out of a box and the beans were pretty dry. The hot tortilla were wrapped in paper and the paper were set in the cheese which was then melted to the wrapper. The fajitas fixings weren’t anything to write home about either. You would think when the server cleared the table and her plate of beans and rice were virtually untouched he might inquire if everything was ok or if anything was wrong. He said nothing. Also didn’t bother to ask if we were interested in any desert or anything and just brought the bill. There aren’t many Coco’s left and it’s because they aren’t very good.

Ah, New Orleans original mexican restaurant… back in the days before Hurricane Katrina’s wrath brought a influx of hispanics into New Orleans there were very few mexican restaurants compared to the number of other restaurants. Before many of the few that did exist Pre-K, there was Cuco’s. Probably more Tex than Mex, and decorated to the stereotypical peak of mexican cheesiness, they still manage to make some pretty decent grub.
