I had not been to long John Silvers in many, many years. I decided to take the family today only because I recently read online that they had finally changed their oil to a trans fat free blend. They seem to be one of the last fast food places to eliminate trans fat, and I could not resist going back to one of my childhood favorites. The food tasted exactly as I remember it tasting in the 80s and early 90s — typical battered fish, chicken, and fries. They always had great hush puppies and coleslaw, and my visit today was no exception. The one thing that took me aback was the price. Obviously, I knew the prices would have gone up since my last visit over a decade ago, but I was really surprised to pay $ 8 for a meal consisting of 8 smallish shrimp on rice, two sides, and hush puppy, no drink. Kids meals with a single chicken or popcorn shrimp, fries, and drink run $ 4 – 5, depending on your entrée choice. Our relatively light meal for two adults and two kids was $ 25, and that was with one of the adults drinking water. It just seems expensive for fast food, with healthier and tastier Panda and Chipotle options basically across the street. That said, we all liked the fact that they had diet root beer on the soda fountain.

Ok, so I am watching my weight and trying to eat better. I had a taste for a nice seafood salad and found out that LJS was offering a couple of new salads: one seafood and one chicken. So, I stopped by yesterday after to work and got the seafood salad. I paid a little over 5 bucks for probably a cup to cup and a half of salad. The salad is plain iceberg lettuce, shredded carrots a couple of tomatoes and slight trace amount of cheese. The«seafood» part of the salad is a mixture witih baby shrimp and crab meat(not sure if it is «real crab or fake crab) and a mayonnaise mixture that had a nice mild flavor. You get a very small amount of the actual seafood on this salad. I would have been better off going to the store and getting the fixins’ to make my own seafood salad than to buy this tiny bowl. It is certainly not even close to being worth 5 bucks. It should be no more than 2.50. On the plus side, the workers at this location are always very, very friendly.
