Fantastic food, service, and décor! This Mexican restaraunt is true to it’s roots and as someone who just moved from Southwest Texas Border to Virginia I was not only impressed but felt like I was back in Texas.

My first time in as I was heading to another restaurant. Saw the huge sign $ 1.00 Tacos Tues & Thurs. Soft or hard shell, chicken or beef. What the heck. In I go in. I ordered 2 chicken soft tacos and they arrive quickly but its beef. Corrected chicken arrive shortly after. Meantime eating the chips and salsa, both red and blanca. I wonder if they add alot of water on cheap taco days. Both sauces VERY thin, very wateryish. The chips just ok. The tacos good but pouring out«watery liquid» when picked up. Thank goodness the taco wrap didnt fall apart with the extreme sogginess of chicken. Overall, not too impressed. Server nice enough. And i would hope they would add at least one of their better beers available on draft(Modelo, Dos Equis, Pacifica) on their Thurs All Day Special $ 1.99. I may come back for regular menu offering but there are so many other good(better) places w(Mexican place in the next shop ctr) I like better.

Good food, huge selection. They also have the delicious Salsa Blanco with your chips. I have been here several times and the food is always consistently good.

Margaritas are neon green. I’ve had better tortilla chips from the grocery store. When a Mexican restaurant fails with these two things, it is in no way«authentic». My entrée was okay and the service was good. Unfortunately I will not be back.

I first ate at Viva Mexico in Chesterfield County and liked it enough that I drive out here just for their food. The owners are great people and have treated us great for years. Awesome Place. Enjoy!

It’s always a good thing when a new restaurant that serves Mexican food opens in my little town of Mechanicsville. Viva Mexico is nestled in the Townes at Liberty Trace(next to Five Guys & Ginger Red). I know they’ve been having a tough time with this location because their marketing has been aggressive. I decided to cheat on my #1 Mexican food place(the Patron) to give Viva Mexico its fair shot. The atmosphere when we walked in was very charming. Tons of traditional Mexican décor lined the walls, complete with velvet paintings. We were seated promptly and I believe the owner may have been the one waiting on us. He asked me if I spoke a little Spanish and I answered that I did(about 0.008%). I put in for two orders of Carnitas Michoacanas and settled in with my mug of DOSXX Amber. The wait was a little much, but Carnitas Michoacanas takes time. You don’t want to rush this dish. The food arrived and tasted pleasant. It didn’t have the deep flavor of being marinated in beer and its own fat for hours. I’m not claiming to know exactly how Viva Mexico prepares it but it clearly lacked the depth this dish is capable of. To be fair Tio Pablo can’t perfect it either. Now for the good news, their refried beans are the new KING in the bean category. Most restaurants cut corners and don’t take their time with the beans but this place knocks it out of the park! Another win are the chips and salsa, light and crispy and great flavor. Now let’s talk a little about the special picante hot sauce he brought me. It came in a little bowl and looked innocent enough. What followed were my eyes watering up and my sinuses becoming fully cleared. My vision gained the ability to see ultra-violet rays and colors now had sound. You might say it was hot like you casually mention the surface of the sun is hot. Tobasco, Tapatío, Sriracha, and Texas Pete are all spicy in a cute teddy bear way; this stuff will light you up like an atom bomb. If you’re one of those blazing hot thrill seekers you’ll want to try this stuff. I could only manage to lightly dab my food in it. It’s loaded with flavor and packs a great kick! The owners put a lot of love into this place. You can tell they poured their heart and soul into it. They even have an authentic Mexican candy store near the exit. If you’ve ever been to Mexico or have Mexican relatives you’ll recognize all this stuff. Vero Mango(chili covered mango flavored lollipops) and Baby Lucas Chamoy’s for example. It was a pleasant experience and worth a second visit to find out how well they can execute the carne asada platter(something the Patron sucks at).

Standard Mexican sit-down. Good food at reasonable prices. If «Viva Mexico!!» was a decorating style and/or ambiance, this place has nailed it. Lots of hanging streamers, flags, and sombreros. The kind of atmosphere that just makes you want to party. I got the lunch enchiladas and they were tasty and a normal sized lunch portion. Chips and salsa were A-OK. I’d go back.
