The Hair District

I have been been getting my hair cut by Qiao for the last two years. His attention to detail and passion for hair has brought me coming back time after time. He is very particular about how his clients look and won’t let them leave until everything is done to perfection. I wouldn’t think twice about sending my friends and family to him.

I’ve waited to write this review because seeing a colorist once or twice isnt enough to determine whether they’re good at what they do or not.
I found Qiao on Instagram (@qiaohair); his posts kept showing up on my Explore Page. After browsing through his 700 photos and stalking who all followed him (5k+ followers) I made the leap of faith and booked an appointment. You’ve been warned, book as soon as you can because he’s always booked at least a month out!
Long story short: he keeps it real! And I value that in anyone that I have a relationship with even if you’re my colorist. I’ll start every appointment by showing him a photo of the color I want him to achieve and he’ll let me know if it’s possible and if it’s not, what is. That my fellow Unilocalers is rare.

Kaylan is an absolute gem. I have been seeing her for cuts and colors for nearly three years, and my mom and brother have been going even longer.
I have thick hair with a lot of grey (if left unattended), and I leave every time feeling absolutely amazing. Kaylan is particularly great at giving me a style that works for me every day without a lot of fussing. She does the same for my mom, who has a very cute, short hair cut with finer hair. Kaylan makes sure the style works for our real lives – not just when we are in a stylist’s chair. That alone is well worth the five-​star review.
But here’s the real reason I wanted to write this review: she is absolutely amazing with my older brother, who has autism. She understands him and is kind to him, and she gives him a great hair cut. It’s hard for a guy like my brother to have a lot of normal, everyday experiences. Kaylan treats him with such kindness and respect. Our family adores her; we don’t live anywhere near Maple Grove but it is well worth the trip to see Kaylan.
While I haven’t worked with any of the other stylists at The Hair District, everyone seems so friendly (especially the reception staff) and the place always seems to be full of regular customers. I know there’s at least one stylist on staff who specializes in unusual colorings, so ask the receptionist for a referral if you want a non-​traditional color.
They carry several different product lines. The décor is fun. I’m a fan.

Got my hair done by Qiao (chow). I came in to get my hair dyed since my roots looked horrible!!! He definitely knows what he is doing & he’s amazing at it too! He’s like the hair God! He walked me through every single step that he took with my hair. Afterwards, my hair felt amazing!!! It didn’t feel damaged or anything at all.
If you’re considering a trim or dying your hair. You have to come to him! The best!!!

I made an appointment with no recommendation for a cut and color. I am so thrilled that I got Elle T. as my stylist. My hair is not easy at all. Resistant grey, a desire by my hair to be red regardless of my desire that it be caramel brown, and pretty fine textured. Elle got the color exactly right, and covered the grey in less time than I am accustomed to. She also on my first visit gave me a great cut.
I’m so happy to have found her. I have been going to a salon about 40 minutes away and although I was very happy there, I had to find something closer to home, but was nervous because it was trial and error to get everything right. But Elle really listened to me and is obviously very good at what she does. Again, my hair is not that easy to color and highlight and I am just loving the color Elle did.
I highly recommend her and this salon.

Prairie has been my stylist for the past 5 years. I have followed her throughout her professional career and remain a loyal client to this day. For me, once I find a particular stylist, I tend to stick with them — not only for their talent and expertise, but for the connection and customer service. These are all equally important in my book.

The reason I come here is because I followed my hair stylist who used to work at Aveda. I’ve been going to her for about 10 years since she cuts fabulous layers for long hair. She’s reliable and always on time so I never have to wait too long when I arrive at the salon.
If you find the right stylist this place is great! Most of them used to work at other salons and the way they drum up their own business is by self advertising since they rent their own chair and space.

Chelsea Hofmann saved my hair. Let me tell you my horror story at Moxie first.
I had been a few other places and tried tape in extensions before until I finally had enough of spending oodles of money just for them to slip out after a month. Not only did my last stylist have me go online to purchase the extensions myself, they also did a horrendous job of matching my natural hair color with the extensions and I was incredibly self conscious about it. They had convinced me that «it looks great!». The final straw was when I went in to get I-​Tip extensions and after 4 hours and a significant amount of money later, they ALL fell out within 2 days. When I went back to get a refund, the said that they don’t do refunds. I will NEVER go back there again.
But then one sunny day I went to The Hair District in Maple Grove, crappy extensions in hand and asked what they could do for me. Chelsea saw me right away and told me the bad extensions were the reason my hair was barely growing and couldn’t believe when I told her about my previous experience. She ordered new tape extensions for me and I got them put in last night. I’m very self conscious about my short hair. I HAVE NEVER BEEN HAPPIER WITH MY HAIR!!! It looks so natural and she blended the cut and color perfectly so you would never guess that I have extensions. As if that isn’t reason enough to see her, she’s absolutely charming and had me laughing the whole time I was there. It used to take up to 4 hours to have this process (color and extensions) done, and it took her no time at all. I can’t say enough good things about Chelsea Hofmann!!!

I wanted to try this place out and had no idea whether it would be good or not. They gave me Amy J. as my stylist.
I thought she was great! The space is really nice, even a little fancy, but the staff is very relaxed and down to earth. It turned out that Amy and I grew up about a mile apart so we had a good time reminiscing about Maple Grove back in the day.
I really liked my cut and color. I was probably being a difficult client… I didn’t have a picture but I had a strong idea of what I wanted. Amy really got it and I haven’t been this happy about a cut in a long time.
Two other things I’ll mention which might be totally weird to me:
–I really appreciate when your hair stylist has like a sixth sense about when to chat with you and when not to. I’ve actually not gone back to stylists in the past because they were too chatty. Amy was excellent about giving me some quiet magazine time but was also really fun to talk to.
–I’ve never noticed this about another stylist to comment about it, and it maybe sounds creepy??? But, Amy was super gentle and relaxing. Usually when I get foils in, its not a fun experience. But the color didn’t have any bad smell and I was almost falling asleep during the process. I guess if you have a sensitive head then you should definitely go see her!
The cost for cut and full foils and styling was $ 160 which is pretty costly but not insanity. I would go see Amy again for sure. I don’t know about the other hair places in Maple Grove, but this place is really convenient with lots of parking in the back. Seemed like they did nails and hair removal and stuff there too.
