this place has singlehandedly created the most foul tasting donut to ever exist on planet earth. how dare an institution of dough produce such a heartbreakingly gross pastry. you had a responsibility as a bakery to preserve the sanctity of donuts and instead you have ruined everything. everything.

This place has been through at least 4 incarnations in the 3 years I’ve worked nearby. I must say their baked goods and breads are really, really good. I’ve also had some good made-to-order pizzas there. But even though it may officially close at 5pm, by 4 they’re pretty much only selling coffee and whatever’s left in the bakery case.

I’ve decided to give this place another try and I have to say they have made some drastic improvements on customer service, quality of food, speed of service and the value you get. Everything is well priced for the area and cant beat spending less than $ 10 including $ 1 tip. They deserve the tip because they are much nicer then my previous experiences. They have dramatically reduced their menu items to what they do best which is food with there home made breads. Salad bar is also amazing but my favorites have recently been the Pizza and the hoagie sandwiches. I don’t know there names but big shout out to the Pizza guy busting his tail making great pizzas and sandwiches. The new manager is very nice and she tries to say hello to the customers, nice touch and I think I see the owner there more often which is a welcome surprise to make sure everything is running smoothly. Definitely try this place.

Midtown is a wasteland. That being said, this place is fine. The coffee is fine, the baked goods are nice, the juices are nice… Nothing is exceptionally delicious and everything is exceptionally expensive. The salad bar has a lot of lovely options(tempeh! Decent falafel!) but it’s also quite pricey. It’s in the basement of a building that hosts both the Associated Press and Coach, so that can be exciting. I saw Rachel Zoe and John Lithgow in the lobby upstairs from S&S. This place is only worth it because there is nothing else around.

This place used to be okay for lunches as they had a salad bar, pizza ovens, and a deli. But then they started chaning their menus, prices, and layout weekly it seemed. Now they just have salads, breads, and overpriced pizzas. Gone way down over the winter.

Yummy salad bar with easy customization or pre-made that day. They also have hot food. I also love the froyo station! Small with only a few flavors. They serve hot breakfast in the morning! Love their coffees maybe even better than the Starbucks upstairs.

I think my review was deleted for this place? Did this happen to anyone else? So I am re-posting! This place is great! There are so many options and everything seems really fresh. They bake all of their bread in house and have one of the most comprehensive salad bars I’ve ever seen. I had a falafel sandwich which came on bread instead of pita, which was different, but really good, because the bread was so good. I can’t wait to try everything here. The only problem is that it’s all the way on 10th! But I would say, if you’re looking for a good lunch, totally worth the trip.

I’m not currently in the area but I’ve been advised that all the issues in my previous review have been addressed. I’m not going to change my rating because I can’t check it myself but I do give them the benefit of the doubt and suggest anyone reading this to check it out for themselves and post their own review. As I said in my earlier review. They would easily be 4 stars if they simply addressed a few things and it seems they have. Check ‘em out.(And let me know if you are so inclined.)

The bakery is delicious. They make their breads on the premises and you can taste the freshness. Coffee is cheap and good(more affordable than Starbucks around the corner). Plus they have a great salad bar with great falafels and a ton of ingredients. It’s a great lunch spot.

Updated: I have recently returned based on a coworkers update. I must have come on a period of transition as the prices of certain ingredients has been lowered to reflect a better price range. I also believe that Unilocal is a forum for discussions like this to occur and the staff here should understand that. I am not here to hurt a business; only to give my honest opinion. I do hope that all gets sorted by August!

If you are having an event catered, you HAVE to try Savory and Sweet. Our daughter attends NYU as a Vocal Performance major. She was having her Junior recital. Our friends are from New York and they know good food, so the stakes were high. We looked on the web and found Savory and Sweet. I worked with Gil, who could not have been nicer. He followed through with every commitment and the price was reasonable. In fact, he was so generous with our food that I had to encourage people to take some home with them. Everything was delicious! Also, they displayed the food beautifully. I look forward to using Savory and Sweet for our daughter’s Senior recital. Thanks, Gil. I strongly encourage you to give Savory and Sweet a try.

I have 2 major problems with this place. 1. Their staff tends to be inconsistent. It seems like the turnover rate for this organization is really high. Every month when I finally start to settle in and have someone consistently making my food and getting used to their personality. The next month it’s a whole new team. This is a constantly disappointing experience. 2. Their burgers/cooked meat is hit or miss.(I say this mostly from experiencing them make burgers.) Half the time I get a burger with raw meat in the middle. The other half when it’s someone I have made friends with there I get a decent burger. I’m someone scared I will end up getting either mad cow disease or salmonella from there one of these days. I feel like the staff aren’t managed well and that they don’t really seem to be motivated to do better. All in all it’s a decent place but it could be way better. –D.

I work in the building, and certainly it is convenient to get lunch there, but i will never again make my way down. Long lines, slow service, inconsistent portions and pricing policies-not so sweet. I’ll savor someone else’s creations.

Location is a little weird, but they had freshly squeezed juices and snacks and stuff. But I think they need to rethink those front doors. When it gets windy, those things are downright dangerous. UPDATE: I’m told there are new doors(unfortunately I’m 3,000 miles away so I can’t verify this just yet)!

This is a great place to grab a late lunch because almost everything is 50% from 3:30 — 4:30. I enjoy coming here for the salads, though they also have a sandwich bar, pizza bar, pasta station, and a buffet style line. The service is less than fantastic, but it’s what you should expect from a place like this. There aren’t many lunch spots around 11th and 10th Avenue so this is probably the best place to grab something.

This used to be 404 but is now Savory and Sweet. I think 404 has better selections but Savory and Sweet has a decent options too although they no longer offer freshly make-your-own pasta for lunch. I got their lunch buffet option and it is by weight or all-you-can-fill plate. The price is a little high but the food is fresh and high quality although pretty greasy. The décor took a downgrade as well. I wonder if this will revive their business because its location is really distant from major traffic. I will come back again for the lunch buffet if I am craving Italian food.

Savory and Sweet(the restaurant formerly known as 404) seems to change its business model, layout and name at least once a week. While we appreciate you are striving for change, it’s really not always for the better… There aren’t many lunch options near 10th ave, but this place has a pasta bar with individually cooked pasta(aptly named pastabilities), salad(usually my go to), all-you-can-eat prepared foods(usually digusting so you probably don’t want to eat much) and soup(also very salty and disgusting). They do have a variety of breads(favorite is the walnut raisin) and desserts which are decent. My favorite part is that these are usually half off in the afternoon, so try to stop by after 3:30pm or so.

There once was a time when I enjoyed this restaurant. That time has passed. 404, now known as «Savory and Sweet»(I think?) has yet to figure itself out. Is it a café? A restaurant? A trendy lunch spot for midtown office drones? A rental space for Sweet 16’s and business meetings? A cafeteria? Not a clue. It’s changed it’s name(but still goes by both perhaps?), it’s changed it’s tone, it’s décor, and I think even it’s management — all in all, this place just can’t quite get it right. My office started going a lot once it changed itself to Savory and Sweet, looking for a different taste outside of the 4 restaurants in the area. When it was 404, it was overpriced and kind of just, not good. Once the switch happened, we were psyched — they had sandwiches, salads, pizzas, desserts, a hot bar, a cold bar, and the BEST, was the pasta bar, with this adorable old man chef we referred to as «Chef Boyarde». They had a 10% «VIP» discount card, gave rolls with every salad or pasta meal, were super friendly, has lunch specials — the works! Then last week, we go back, and there is no discount card(unless you spend $ 10 or more — gross), they are no longer making rolls, Chef Boyarde is long gone, and the general attitude of the staff is complacent and sucky. Today, I forgot my discount card in my office, and even though I come here at least twice a week, they wouldn’t grant me 10% off. Rude. Savory and Sweet/404, whatever you claim to be? We’re over you. And it’s so, so sad. Get it together!

This place is like a hidden underground lunch spot I would’ve never known about if my coworker didn’t tell me. There are a lot of lunch places around the area with the same old stuff like salad, sandwiches, bakery, etc. but the one thing that stands out here is the pasta. I didn’t get the pasta so I wouldn’t know whether or not it tastes good but it looked like you can actually choose what you wanted in your pasta. They also had personal pizzas. I got a salad which was pretty good but salad is salad. Seating areas are a bit confusing I had to find my way out of the hallway to see that there was seating around the corner. I definitely think I’ll be coming here a lot for lunch and to try their desserts and pasta.

404 Savory and Sweet just had their«soft opening» today. A great day to have it since it was pouring outside. There is «outdoor» seating, which is really indoors but gives the entrance a better ambience. There is a nice bar to your left when you enter the place. The pretty space is lined with white tiles and light blue/green accents. They have seating of every variety, from leather couches and booths to leather chairs. It’s a shi shi place to have lunch or a drink. One thing I didn’t like is the floor and stairs were all concrete. Maybe they are still putting on the finishing touches, as I did see some stray paint on leather booths. To the right is their bakery/café where you purchase lunch. There are small windows where you can see that they do their baking on premises. There is freshly baked breads of all shapes, sizes and flavors available. This room though seems to small to handle a big lunch crowd. Everyone had to get on the same line to get either the hot buffet, soup, sandwiches or salad. As none of these items are self serve, the line took a long time. Again, this may be ironed out. I had the grilled chicken blt, which was pretty solid. Orange cupcake was fresh and moist. Everything was half off today. Full priced items are midtown lunch average. There are two more«levels» to the place that are prettily decorated. Most of it is spare though for now. Maybe they will put out more furniture or leave it sparse because they also try to be an «event» space. I will definitely try it again for lunch and afterwork drinks. We’ll see how it shapes up in the near future. They are located in the basement of the sloping Daily News Building on 450 West 33rd Street.
