I have been going on and off for about three years. Masa is great. He always give me a great haircut.

at a last minute reservation I got Masa. Nice seeming fellow, I tried to draw what I wanted. He really listened(almost a first for me): and, after he finished cutting, and it was pretty good, I said that next time the gradations from the bottom should be at a steeper angle. He said, we can do it now.(Wow). Not trying to rush me out, and not losing interest! Wow again. He did indeed redo that part of the cut, and, it was indeed much better and more to my liking. HAPPY. I also like the ambiance of the salon; low key, unrushed, not flashy or jarring on the nerves.

Aki is an artist, he treats every strand of hair like it is gold and takes his time to make sure everything looks perfect. I had been wanting bangs for a long time, but was too scared to take the leap. Finally, I asked Aki to give me a cut with bangs and it looks amazing! He took the time to sit down with me and look at different styles, and in the end gave me bangs that are very flattering to my face shape. Way better than I even thought it would look and easy for me to style at home. His cuts grow out well, so there is no «awkward» phase in between trims. I’ve also brought my mom here when she is visiting the city, and they always treat her so nicely. The atmosphere of this salon is very peaceful and quiet. It feels kind of elegant and stylish without being too intimidating, I feel like anyone could come here and be welcome. Prices are not cheap but are quite reasonable for the quality of the service.

I’ve been coming to that place for 4 years now and they never missed the mark. I own a café around the corner and I’m blessed to have them so close. They’re extremely meticulous, quiet and pay a lot of attention to details. Oh by the way, my son and my spouse are regulars too. Bravo and Merci!

I have gotten a hair cut and japanese straight perm, which were both beyond my expectations! I am used to receiving such bad hair cuts but Keiko is awesome. She listens to you and is so meticulous. She styled the straight perm to make it look more natural. I love it and highly recommend!

I used to be a regular here for a few years until I had the misfortune of being so sick that I slept through my appointment. Of course, no allowance for the MANY times I walked in and got a cut when the stylist was free due to a cancellation. I think that’s called DOUBLE-DIPPING, no? Charge the person who missed the appointment AND make money on walk-ins? Wow. Very disappointed at the shoddy treatment of a once loyal customer. The cuts were decent. Take your chances that life won’t intrude if you want to risk being a customer here. Ridiculous.

Sadly Not Good Japanese Hair Salon, Barber for MEN. I used to go Barber Shops Hair Salons in Tokyo and spending $ 70~200 for Hair cut. and They are SUPERBEXCELLENT! not even one hair off… and this COWLICKSYou can not Compare to that at ALL. ALL American Barber Shop in Manhattan is Really Sucks! It’s like you asking your friend to cut your hair for free kind of hair cut. or even you can cut it yourself better with Machine. It is Japanese style Hair Cutting with Scissors But Level of Hair cut is 1~3 out of 10. I paid about $ 60 plus tip total $ 70~80. It was worth about $ 20 hair cut… I DONOTRECOMMEND if YOUARELOOKINGFORREALJAPANESEHAIRCUT. You should be Happy here if you just need hair cut like American Cheap Barber shop.

My hair being very thick and straight is very difficult to cut and manage. Kick has been doing a great job with keeping it light and textured without a lot of maintenance or any use of product!

i am extremely satisfied with the cosme perm. my hair was extremely damaged with the remnants of a dye from January and three perms throughout this year(i guess i had quite an emotional year as i tend to go to salons to make myself happy). my stylist, aki kimura advised me on which treatment would produce the most natural results without being too harmful. not only did he give me a great recommendation, he was meticulous through every step without an assistant(washing, application, rinse, and blowout), and produced solid results! i wanted to straighten my hair without destroying the volume. it has now been over a week since my perm and my hair is luscious, straight, and frizz free! several of my coworkers have already noticed the difference. i highly recommend this salon. thank you aki! i can’t wait to return for a haircut!

I have had some of my best haircuts here, and I’m only sad that I moved to the West Coast and am no longer able to go!

I haven’t gotten a hair cut in almost 3 years because of horrible past experiences but I was tired of trimming my own hair and after hours of researching for the perfect salon, I decided to book an appointment with Masako at Cowlicks Japan! I have very long thin Asian hair past my waist and went in looking for a few inches to be cut off so that I would have a straight edge instead of my uneven layers for it to look fuller. Masako understood instantly and was very gentle with my hair. She gave me the perfect hair cut I envisioned and she was absolutely adorable! The service was great and I couldn’t have asked for better.

If you had any sympathy to even ask why the appointment was missed, then you would know that i missed the appt due to severe illness and hospitalization. But you didnt bother to ask nor did you care. The man that answers the phones basically had a «i don’t care attitude» and I REFUSE to do business with this type of business! This was the first and only time that an appt was missed while my family and i have gone there for several years and have referred at least a dozen customers there. ABSOLUTELYUNREASONABLE

This place understands straight hair and true to their name, how to cut hair with cowlicks. Every staff member is well trained and so sweet. They are all Japanese. They meticulously scissor cut your hair and know how to create texture. I always get compliments on my cut. Great value. Getting more and more difficult to get an appointment last minute.

I love this place! I’m half-Japanese, and have Asian hair, so I try to find places that work better with that. I’ve tried a couple places in New York, and this is by far the best one. I just got another haircut from here, and with a different stylist, both were great! I’m getting it dyed next week, so I will be updating this to let you know how they do with that. Oh and non-Japanese people go here too, they’ve all left looking pretty satisfied.

After I went astray from my regular stylist, I’ve been lost. I even tried going back to her but she already left me and the salon. So sad. Then I found Cowlicks Japan and my hair has been rejuvenated. I was specifically looking for a Japanese hair salon(bc once you go Japanese you never go back) and in Chelsea. I saw all the great reviews here and decided to give it a shot. My stylist was Chie and she really listened to what I was looking for. I also showed a picture of the style I wanted and she knew what to do. Chie was very meticulous and took her time, but was not super slow. She takes her job very seriously. When it was done she brought out this giant framed mirror, the type that is hung on the wall, to show me the back of my head. If you are particular, I highly recommend bringing a pic of the style/cut you want. Chie was able to replicate it. The salon has a zen feel and the reclining chair for the hair wash was super comfy. However the chair for the haircut was a regular chair that you would find in a living room. Odd, but the stylist worked with it. As far as pricing, it is based on the length of your hair. I fell into the short bracket and was charged $ 60, which is fairly reasonable in NYC standards. In the end, happy with my cut and will surely return.

I am a NYC gal who has lived here for over 15 yrs. I’ve been around the fancy-salon block a time or two. I can truly say that I have never had a better cut than at Cowlicks with Masako. She is an artist. She is a perfectionist. She is magical. I have paid double for bad cuts at some of the top salons here and in LA. I can’t imagine being happier. I should point out that I have curly hair, which is maybe more difficult to get right. Still, Masako shines. If I could give her twenty stars, I would.

Great haircut! Had my hair cut by Kaiko and she is a genius! I have had many hair cuts in New York at less than stellar but trendy /high priced salons. This experience is far better than any of those places. The salon itself is modern and clean. The receptionist is nice and respectful(a far cry from the normal snotty greeting you receive at most NYC salons). Kaiko was a genius. She did the hair washing portion herself which I really appreciate for some reason. The haircut itself was one of the longest I have had — in a good way! She was so meticulous and really wanted to get it right. It’s clear she takes great pride in her work. At the price — slightly cheaper than most high-end salons– this place can’t be beat!
