St Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center

We came to St. Huberts to see if we could find a companion for our 9 ½ year old rescue dog. After going through the kennels with a staff member, we wanted to spend time with a little black dog we saw. She had arrived at St Hubert’s the night before, she had been picked up roaming the streets of Camden and had been transferred from a local shelter to St. Hubert’s. She was scheduled to be transferred again to a small dog rescue because she was not eating and showed signs of stress, shaking and defecting inside her kennel.
I admit I was reluctant to adopt her because there were many unknowns but we agreed on a foster to adopt situation, we all thought she needed to be in a home environment. We brought her home and took her to the groomers the next morning because she had feces imbedded in her fur and reeked to high heaven. She was given a buzz cut, removing 1 pound of matted fur revealing scabs and a protruding rib cage and hipbones. If you haven’t guessed by this point in the story we fell in love with her and fast forward a few months, she has flourished beyond our expectations. See pic attached, spoiled rotten!
It was very clear from the beginning that everyone from the volunteers to the staff are extremely dedicated to the welfare of animals. The facility is modern with clean kennels, the kitty corner has plenty of spots to interact with cats, the layout is very airy and inviting.
The adoption process was efficient and staff guide you through the entire process. There is a vet on site to spay and neuter your pet, the surgery and medicine is included in the adoption fee. There is also an animal behavioralist to answer any questions and with your adoption you receive a coupon for the onsite store and behavioral center. The staff even call and check up on you to make sure everyone is adjusting. Basically they give you all the tools and support to make sure the adoption and afterwards are a success.
I would without a doubt recommend St Hubert’s to anyone looking to adopt an animal. Everyone deserves a second chance, go to St Hubert’s you never know if you might come home with a friend for life.

Unfortunately my first experience with St. Hubert’s was a negative one.
I decided that I wanted to adopt a cat and went to St. Hubert’s. I was impressed with the facility itself and the volunteers were pleasant.
I spent time with two kittens. One was a rambunctious boy who wanted to play rather than be held. The other, a girl, hissed at first but then let me hold her for nearly 2 hours.
I decided she was the one and told the adoption counselor. I was a first time cat owner and didn’t really know much about cats. I paid the $ 175 adoption fee and was given two small bags of dry food and two small cans of wet food along with paperwork about the kitten… dates of shots, when she was spayed etc. She was put in a box container and I was on my way.
I was so excited and talked to her the entire car ride home.
I arrived back at my 1 bedroom apartment and opened the box thinking she would be the same cat who liked to be held. Pretty naïve of me I realize.
She immediately hid under the couch and I couldn’t get to her. I called the shelter and the manager Jennifer said I should have only kept her in a small bedroom or bathroom; however, the adoption counselor did not tell me any of this.
I wasn’t able to grab her to place her in the bathroom so I listened to 5 of my coworkers, all cat owners, who said not to grab her and let her come to you.
She started to slowly come out when I put her food out. I slowly approached her after she finished eating with a toy in hand but she hissed and ran. I would get low to the ground and blink my eyes or not make direct eye contact so she wouldn’t feel threatened but there was really no progress.
A few days later I came home from work and noticed she had sprayed urine all over my couch even though she was litter box trained and had been using the litter box.
Since she was spayed just a few days before I brought her home, I thought perhaps she had a UTI. I called the shelter and spoke to Jennifer, the manager, who told me oh that’s probably because she’s feral. I was shocked and asked why wasn’t I given that information. I explained that I was a first time cat owner and don’t have the type of training to work with a feral kitten.
Jennifer proceeded to tell me that she was not feral even though she had just told me the kitten was feral. Jennifer explained the kitten came in feral but became friendly and was no longer considered feral. Granted she was only at the shelter for 4 days and spent that time recovering from surgery. Certainly not enough time to socialize and tame a feral kitten.
I expressed frustration that I was not given all of the information to make the right decision about which cat to adopt and that St. Hubert’s did both me and the kitten a huge disservice by not sharing that information. I explained again that I am not equipped to tame a feral kitten. Jennifer argued again that the kitten was not feral.
Finally Jennifer asked what I wanted to do. I said I want someone to pick her up that night. She said that would not be possible but would send someone in the morning. I accepted that and said I also wanted a refund.
The next morning the kitten was picked up and I felt a lot of relief even though I was sad and disappointed it didn’t work.
Jennifer never contacted me to let me know that she’d processed the refund or to apologize. I called a day later to ask if my refund was processed.
Jennifer would not come to the phone and had another staff member tell me that they’d sent it upstairs for processing. I said I would call my credit card company and see if the refund had come through. The staff member explained that they cannot process refunds back on a credit card and would instead cut me a check.
I found that unusual but asked when I could expect to receive it. The staff member was curt and impolite which only added to my frustration. I believe the attitude from staff comes from the top down. It seems that St Hubert’s needs to do a better job training their staff to be polite along with better matching those of us who come in wanting to open up our homes and lives to a shelter animal.
There should have been a more in depth interview on my personality and want I would like in a cat. I would have explained that I am a complete cat novice with some anxiety but I have a huge heart and want to share my life with a pet.
They should never have given me a feral kitten who was still recovering from surgery and who had not been adequately socialized. It’s not the kittens fault and I can see her doing well once properly socialized with someone who knows what guidelines to follow.
St. Hubert’s set me and this kitten up for failure.
I will look elsewhere to adopt and would not recommend based on my personal experience though I’m sure others may have had a better experience.

We adopted three cats in September, Bart, Lisa and Maggie, all are doing well and say thank you for all your love and care during their stay with you… keep up the good work team!

Shame on St. Hubert’s for working together for months with a major pet store in order to evict a great animal rescue from their ²⁴⁄₇ adoption center. This was done with no explanation and minimal notice to the current rescue.

About two months ago we lost our family cat and went to St Hubert’s to adopt another one. The staff is very friendly and helpful and we were able to spend as much time with the cats as needed. We ended up adopting a sweet and playful black kitten who has quickly made her way into our hearts.
Definitely the place to go if your looking for cats/​kittens.

Our family couldn’t be happier with St. Hubert’s! We recently lost our family dog and everyone in the house was crying every day. We saw a dog on Petfinder and went to the adoption hours 2 days later. We had a tremendous adoption councilor who let us go back and look in the kennels. We saw the dog, Fender, that had been on Petfinder. The adoption councilor brought him and us to the community room for some quiet time. She ran through their intake check list: good with other animals, health, temperment, etc. The only warning sign he had was some mild food aggression which they had been working on with him and had gotten to step 8 out of a 9 step protocol. This is why I think St. Hubert’s really excels: they worked with him to make him a better dog and we felt more comfortable knowing he would be a good fit for our family as a result.
The counselor let us take our time to get to know Fender but it was pretty much love at first sight. We filled out the paperwork and they took him in the back to microchip him before he left. He came neutered, microchiped, and with all his shots. Although we had to agree to take him to our vet within 7 days, it was nice knowing we wouldn’t have an astonomical vet bill waiting and all the basics were taken care of.
He also came with a nice, new collar, leash, and bag of food, all his vet records and vaccination papers, and training materials. We also got a free training class (we’re going in two weeks because of work schedules) and $ 50 off the training classes (which make it $ 149 — we’re signed up for the end of the month). We also got 10% off the pet boutique and took advantage of that to pickup a few toys and supplies.
Overall, we adopted the perfect dog! He’s happy and house trained! St. Hubert’s made the adoption process so easy and offered wonderful post adoption support! Thank you so much!

Visited this shelter with a friend who wanted to adopt. They were so careful and kind in their interaction with her. After listening to her requests, we walked the dog area. Dogs were in clean areas, no poo or bad smell. She selected a older dog and had an opportunity to interact. After some paperwork, off we went. I am not sure how much she paid but the shelter deserves their fee to care for the other animals!
To adopt a dog that was given up for adoption or found wandering and starving is wonderful. the volunteers at this shelter were very into their animals and I commend them. This place does a great job.

Great people and inexpensive adoption fees. We adopted a kitten for $ 12 compared to $ 150 at a shelter in East Hanover. Animals looked like they were all cared for well and they had plenty of different animals. Cats, dogs m, guinea pigs and rabbits. Clover the cat is adjusting well

After all of the good reviews I’ve heard about St. Huberts, I was disappointed I cannot report the same. Upon calling St. Hubberts to gather some information about their puppy training class, it was very dishearting and offensive that the front end staff would automatically assume because my dog was not a rescue, that it was from a puppy mill. The office staff was VERY rude, judgmental and unprofessional. As a potential customer this is the last thing I want to hear about a dog I care for and love. My puppy is in a better place now then it was in the pet shop and for this individual to make me feel bad about where I got my puppy is outrageous. My first impression of St. Hubberts is very negative. Not only did they lose a potential customer and I will make sure I tell others of the complete rudeness.

This place is amazing. I went a couple of nights ago for volunteer orientation and it was an eye opening experience in a great way. They truly treat their animals awesome… as if they were a family. The animals are extensively screened for illness and temperament. They are constantly trained and they make it a point that they are not euthanized for any reason (time frame, age) unless there is no option (illness). They do all that they can to make these animals feel loved. For the most part, their animals are healthy and adopted in a short time frame. The place is immaculate. There is no foul «kennel» odor and they are so excited to see you. They help several communities with strays and provide low cost spay/​neutering. I don’t care how masculine or macho you are, these adorable dogs and cats will pull at your heartstrings…
As for volunteering they are always looking for help. I don’t care if I need to clean the crap out of their cages but I will do what is necessary to help out and so should you! It’s very rewarding and who knows, you might find yourself adopting a cat/​dog yourself. They offer many different ways of helping out. From cleaning their cages, to dog walking, to playing with the dogs, to therapy dogs all the way to actually assisting to train the animals. The place is not limited to dogs/​cats, they also have birds and some other animals.
I really do suggest that as opposed to buying a dog/​cat, go down to St. Huberts and adopt a life long friend. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. :-)
And come on, if you aren’t «awww’d» by the dog used for St. Huberts profile picture you have no heart! Now go and volunteer ASAP… :-)

I just want to say how nice the gal LAUREN who is the animal control officer for St. Huberts was.
We found an old lab mix on our street, and after we couldn’t find the owner (no tags on the dog!!! bad!), we called the Summit Police, who dispatched St. Huberts to pick up the old fellow.
Lauren was so nice and you could really tell her love for animals, it wasn’t just a job for her. She was very caring and the good news was the owner called and they will be reunited (dog and owner) today!
St. Huberts was great and Lauren made me feel better about leaving the dog in their care.

YAY for people who adopt animals! And a big high-​five to the guys who run this place. My dog Loki came from Saint Hubert’s in 1998, and while he was marked as timid and unpredictable (he was an older dog who’d also been abused and had some minor health issues, so he wasn’t really a «catch», you might say — but there was something about him with his little beagle eyes), St. Huberts let me take an hour to get acquainted and see if we were a match. We were. The staff took great care to show me what Loki might be up against in a new home since we weren’t sure how long he’d been on the street, neutered and vaccinated him for a small donation and I couldn’t have been more pleased with the experience.
10 years later, Loki was still the sweetest, most loving dog I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. It’s true what they say — shelter dogs really do become the best companions. And I have St. Huberts to thank for 10 great years.

St Huberts is a top-​notch no-​kill shelter and adoption facility. There’s never a shortage of cats and dogs who need homes — and St Huberts does their very best to help these little guys.
Animals are pre-​screened for temperament — and so are you — to ensure the best match for your needs and lifestyle. The dogs here are up to date on shots, and routinely taken into the world by the Canine Coaches. The Coaches take the pups to school, as well as walks around town and parks to socialize them and keep them from falling into a «pound» mindset.

And. my sudden animal activism continues. I forgot to mention this little nugget. St Huberts is one of a few incredible shelters that helps out in rescuing Sato’s — homeless and abused dogs — form Puerto Rico. There is actually a place called «dead dog beach» where unspeakable things happen to animals — and St Huberts does an enomous deed of taking in many of the lucky dogs who get rescued here.
