Hogan Family YMCA

OMG, I absolutely LOVE this place. My bff checked me in as a guest here, and I was so impressed with how nice this place is. I’ve only been to one other YMCA, and it was nowhere near as nice as this one was. They have most of the equipment anyone would look for at a gym, and I know they also have a sauna. They even have a rock climbing tree shaped like an actual tree. It was super cute, and I have to admit, I was a little disappointed I didn’t get to climb the tree.
They’re daycare looks awesome. If I were a kid, I’m probably ask to throw my bday party there lol. The also have a smoothie place that is delicious too.

Very nice facility. We checked out what seems like ALL of the gyms within a 10 mile radius of our house and the Hogan Family YMCA cannot be beat for value, services offered and staffing. We have our monthly payments deducted directly from our account and the rate we pay for our family is EXCELLENT! The entire staff is always very attentive and willing to help. Equipment is not brand new but it is fully functional and for the most part in a good state of repair. Locker rooms, sauna and steam room are clean and if there are any issues you can notify one of the staff and the issue is taken care of promptly. We look forward to a long relationship with this facility.

A very nice facility. I am from out of town and frequent this YMCA with my A W A Y privileges. It really is one of the best things the YMCA has to offer. Very clean facility always enough machines to get on. Locker room is nice. Steamroom and sauna that seem to barely be used which could be a good thing or a bad thing.

We’ve been members of the Hogan Family Y ever since we moved back to the Madison area in 2011. At first, we loved it. To be honest, the included child care is just about the only way my wife ever manages to get a workout. The facilities are spacious, well lit, and comfortable.
However, in the last year or so it’s been sliding. The equipment isn’t being maintained well. This shows up in simple things like the clamps for the barbells being broken or lost and not being replaced. Or the squat pad that was ripped for over a year before it was finally thrown out… and not replaced. It also shows up in bigger things, like cardio equipment that’s «out of order» for weeks on end.
Worse problems are in the youth sports leagues. It took us three weeks to sign our son up for basketball this year… and then they put him on a team with kids who were significantly older. It was a lousy experience. Given how much trouble it had been to sign up, we just took him out. But even that didn’t work out right. The enrollment forms claimed we could get a full refund if we withdrew before the first game. Even though we did so, they told us we’d only get a half refund. After I gave up that fight, we ended up not getting ANY refund at all.
The worst, though, is the child care area. In the beginning it was fantastic. The employees really cared about the kids, there was a great ratio of employees to children, etc. Now the employees are disinterested and not paying attention. This isn’t all of them — some of the old timers are still great. But they are the exception now, not the rule. They’ve also dropped afternoon hours for the infant center.
I’d really love to see this Y pick things back up and turn it around. But as of right now, if we didn’t need the child care, we’d cancel our membership.

Great workout facility. Great machines, walking track, pool, fields, and bball court. The only knock is how busy it is. If you work the 9 to 5 and want to work out after… good luck. It will be incredibly busy. Also, the pool hours are kinda strange. Check with their website before going to swim.

The YMCA on Hughes must have over advertised before it opened, because it is very crowded now. Don’t dare try to workout before 9 am and after 5 pm because you will wind up waiting in line for machines or equipment. My husband and I joined because of the great family rate, but we’re about ready to leave because of the over crowding. It opened last fall and we have been members since December 2010, so maybe it will slow down soon.
That being said, the machines are top-​notch and kept in very good shape. The cardio/​weights room is always super clean. Exercise classes are usually a little crowded, but the instructors are good at what they do.

I’m doing this review simply to add the business and photos. However, I did check out the basketball gym and it looks great — which is expected with a brand new gym. Also, the pool area and weight room both look nice. Should be a great option for Madison.
