We visited the cheesy rider today for food truck Thursday in miller park. We ordered the garland hill sandwich. It was a bigger sandwich than we expected. The flavor was unique with the Gouda, onion and artichoke but we enjoyed it very much. It was $ 6 for just the sandwich which was a bit high considering that does not include a side or drink. If we would have added a soup and drink it would have been $ 10. That is a bit much for a grilled cheese. Overall very good though!

The key to a good food truck is to order quick, get your food quick, or have food that’s so good, it’s worth waiting a little bit on both ends. I think what people need to know about food trucks, especially ones delivering quality product, is that they are making your food FRESH for you to order, and they are usually a 1 – 4 person team. Food Trucks are not pseudo fast-food. Food trucks are a microcosmic restaurant on wheels — please be patient and kind. OK none of that had to do with the Cheesy Rider, well, it did, but not about them specifically. Lynchburg has started to do Food Truck Thursdays in Miller Park, which is where we found ourselves for lunch today. With it being a tad on the cool side for a late day in April, we wanted something cozy and warm — something you’d crave on a fall day — what says that more than grilled cheese and soup? Cheesy Rider offers a variety of gourmet grilled cheeses, all named after the city’s famous seven hills. They even offer one with no cheese on it at all for those who are vegan or lactose intolerant. A sandwich alone will cost you $ 6. I know you’re thinking that’s steep for a grilled cheese, but I’d like to point out a few things: 1. The sandwiches are not made on standard run-of-the-mill square sandwich bread. I’d say mine was about 4“x6″. The bread looked to be of the white variety, a bit of a sourdough taste, and thin so that you could really get what you came for — the CHEESE(see #2 below) 2. These people DONOT skimp on the CHEESE. In fact, I actually deducted a star because there was so much cheese on mine that it didn’t melt all of the way. I believe that’s the challenge of the perfect grilled cheese — perfectly browned outside, ooey gooey cheesy inside. Don’t get me wrong — it was still delicious! 3. Cheese is expensive. You might think a grilled cheese is a cheap food, but, really, you’re getting a good deal for the sheer quantity of cheese you’re given. I’m sitting here STUFFED. Go with a friend and get two different kinds as they diagonally cut these just like your mom would do. 4. The sandwiches are packed up in a paper sleeve similar to what you’d get a soft pretzel in, so they are easy to carry, on top of the fact that they put these in brown bags, and the tomato soup containers are also substantial. Let’s talk about the soup. Yes, they only have one, but if you’re gonna have one it better be good, and if you’re gonna serve soup with grilled cheese it’d better be TOMATO. Their soup, offered in two sizes, is delish. I don’t doubt it’s made with canned tomatoes, but I do not have a problem with that. This is MILES better than Campbell’s, which is really a travesty and should never be considered the cornerstone of tomato soup, but it is what most of us know as the standard. This soup has a lovely fresh taste to it, with nice chunks of tomatoes and packs a punch of richness with a dash of cream. It’s rich without being over the top. PERFECT for dipping your grilled cheese in, or on its own. We did both. The BIG soup is quite big. We split it and still had some in the bottom. I’d say you get 12 oz. for the big, I didn’t see the small but I’d say it’s at least half that size. You pay $ 1.50 more on top of your sandwich for a small, and $ 2.50 for a large. In addition, Cheesy Rider also has chips and the COOLEST fridge I’ve seen on a food truck yet(see my photo) — It’s IN the truck, built in directly to the left of the window, so it’s self-serve and looks awesome. They have bottled water, canned green tea, cans of Coke and Diet. Definitely check these guys out, they were friendly, we didn’t wait too long for our food, and if you love cheese, you’ll love this place. I can’t wait to see what new and interesting twists they do!

New food truck in town. Expertly crafted gourmet grilled cheese with made from scratch tomato soup. Service is prompt, the place is clean, and the prices are fair. The sandwiches are cleverly named after the different historical districts in town. Highly recommend the Federal Hill with the wing sauce. The owners are vegetarian and are happy to cater to vegans by making a grilled veggie sammy sans cheese. They also accept credit cards, which is nice as well.
