What a cool festival in historical Luckenbach, Texas! Walked in and was welcomed by some of the super friendly committee members and a giant Texas Longhorn named Bob. Impressive creatures, aren’t they? There were over a dozen food trucks(from Austin, San Antonio, Fredericksburg, and other nearby areas) lining a large ~1 acre grassy area. A food tent with tables provided shade and there was even a very thoughtful outdoor hand-washing station. Food choices ranged all the way from ice cream, pizza, and of course BBQ to authentic Korean, Pakistani, and Moroccan; including Slider Provider, Wheelie Gourmet, Clearwater, and CKR Mobile just to name a few. As I had hoped, a few trucks were smart and decided to offer smaller portions of their goods for just a few bucks so I was able to try a few different items in lieu of sharing just one or two full sized $ 8 – 10 portions. Very smart indeed(note to trucks who might participate next year — I strongly believe you will profit more at the end of the day by employing this strategy!). CKR served up some tasty Yaki(dumplings) for 3 bucks and a mere 50 cents for a small side of really good kimchi. Oh, my! Heavenly Eats Akaushi Beef slider was cooked well(lacked in flavor a bit) and came with homemade chips for a whopping $ 4. Large variety of choices and some pretty decent eats. Nine wineries were also on-site, offering free tastings, and a few even handed out glasses towards the end. They were all very happy and chatty. Wine sold by the glass; however, I had my fair share from the many samples. Fiesta and Texas Hills Vineyard were a couple of the more«generous» ones. ;) Then there was the live music that played on the back stage all day long. Some good ol’ country crooners! There were tons of tables, mostly shaded to sit at, and lots of D.O.G.s and kiddos engaging in all the fun. Of course the local«residents» were present — the hens and rooster and sleepy cat. Cold beers were sold from the bar behind the General Store. The Feed Lot was also open(with their $ 6 corn dogs and the like), but we skipped it(why would you eat there during a Food Truck Fest?). Overall, not a bad way to spend a Saturday afternoon/early evening. And, any excuse to visit Luckenbach is just icing. I’ll be back next year. Maybe I’ll see you there! ***NOTE: Proceeds from the event benefited the Texas Center for Wine and Culinary Arts. IMHO $ 15 for admission is very reasonable for this fest — especially considering parking was free and ample, and live music ALL day long. Quite the bargain I’d say. AND, as mentioned, there were a few wineries with booths set up handing out tastings(which typically cost about 10 bucks each anyway), so lots of bang for the buck! Note: Admittedly, I did get lucky and hit the Unilocal Austin Elite lotto so-to-speak and scored free passes(thanks KellyS!); however, my buds and the other 100+ people there didn’t seem to mind the fee either. What do people expect?! Geez. [141 in 2015]

I had high hopes, but left disappointed. For a $ 15 entry fee, I thought there would at least be food and beverage samples. Or even vendors selling small portions for $ 2 – 3 so you could try a bunch of options. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case. Nothing was included with the price of entry(other than live music, I supposed). Some wineries were giving tastings, but nothing to write home about. I ordered some food from the korean bbq truck, which was good(kimchi fries!). The pork cracklins from another truck were good, but I only got to try samples because they were sold out by 1pm! My mom liked the pulled pork from the Luckenbach food stand. If we would have brought some lawn chairs, we might have stayed a little longer to sit in the shade and listen to music. There were also no water filling stations, so if you wanted water(which you did, because it was HOT outside!), you had to purchase it. At least we made a day of our trip and visited some wineries on the way.

I went in expecting too much from this festival. The drive there took us a little under two hours but it was pretty scenery going through hill country and passing all the cute wineries. Once there we realized how tiny the grounds were. For some reason I thought there would be a lot more food trucks than they had, it is a food truck festival after all. It also mentioned something about samples on the event website but we saw none. I’m totally fine with spending the money on good food, but I got excited thinking I could sample different kinds before committing to one item which would make me full. Knowing BBQ had to be on the list we hit Twisted Brisket first for a brisket taco. It was $ 3 and just meh. Living in Austin and coming from Chicago, I am pretty spoiled in terms of delicious food trucks. The ones we ate at here though seemed more along the lines of lunch trucks, not food trucks. KHILLBBQ where I got a sausage link from cooked their meat on site, but again didn’t live up to expectations. It wasn’t terrible but I’ve had better at the Salt Lick which is by no means one of my top favorite BBQ spots in the city. We thought standard fair food might be a better bet so we got a corn dog and jalapeño poppers of which again were let downs. They had live country music playing and plenty of wine and beer, lawn chairs and pets were among the crowd as well, but with bland food we didn’t feel a longing to stay and were out within an hour of showing up. I get what they were trying to accomplish and I feel the idea has potential with a few suggestions. First, maybe don’t do the festival outside in August. In the fall it would have been so much cooler and the grasshoppers wouldn’t have been out in full swing like today. Also, I know Austin has so much more talented food trucks to showcase! Get some of those guys on board and it would have been ten times better. We did get to see a woman being arrested as we were leaving so at least we got a little show out of it
