Six Sigma is a beautiful property with outstanding wines, well worth the long driveway out into the hills. The Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet and Diamond Cuvée are a few of my favorites. A variety of events are hosted here so check the website or sign up for their email list. The Sauvignon Blanc is one of the best I’ve ever had. The staff is friendly and very helpful, creating a relaxing wine tasting experience. Think: ranch house, big porch, lambs grazing, sleepy dogs, shady oak trees, you get the idea. I love the outdoor area with picnic tables and they brought wines out to our group to taste. You won’t want to leave. But when you do, take some wines or, trust me, you’ll kick yourself later.

This is the best winery in Lake County hands down. I have visited twice, and each time had an outstanding experience. On my second visit, I had to join the wine club. Every one of Six Sigmas wines are crafted with beauty and love. There was not one varietal I didn’t enjoy. The owner Kaj is also very personable and took the time to speak with me, even though I arrived at the end of the day. The ranch is beautiful, and gives a relaxed vibe to the tasting experience. Well worth the drive!

I have been to this winery a few times and have always been happy with my service. The entire staff that work here is personable and very friendly. I recently took a tour, and even though it was 100 degrees outside I still enjoyed it. The tour: It was about an hour long and included a ride in their pinzgaur which was a fun experience. The tour takes you onto their property in the hills and wraps around beautiful views of the winery. Walt was our awesome tour guide and he let us stop to taste the grapes, find lake county diamonds on the road, and created a fun filled day for us. After the tour we brought our own picnic so we could eat under the trees at the winery, and he was kind enough to let us do our tasting outside. I cannot describe how amazing the service is here. The wine: I am a recent wine enthusiast and a big fan of reds, but they have a killer white sauvignon blanc that I fell in love with. Overall: I highly suggest coming here to take a tour of this beautiful winery, enjoy good company of the staff, and make a fun day out of it while trying some great wine.

This is a true Lake county gem. My family and I took the Pinzgauer tour and enjoyed a tasting last weekend. It was a real treat to be able to tour a working ranch/vineyard with such an amazing collection of wines and super friendly knowledgeable staff. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo were total standouts and could go head– to– head with any Napa heavy. I can’t wait to go visit again.

Stopped by on a girl’s weekend getaway and had a relaxing wonderful time, almost two hours. Lauren was great! She remembered my girlfriend’s name Debbie«Reynolds». Good wines and cheeses. Recommend this small friendly winery. May join the club to get wine shipped for free to Hawaii. May come back on the way home.

Came upon Six Sigma in my wine travels. Sometimes I just drive, see a winery sign and turn in. Sometimes it is good, sometimes not so. Six Sigma is definitely on the good list. Don’t be put off by the long drive off of Hwy29. It is worth it. You will be rewarded for your efforts. Tasted a delicious Pinot Noir, very nice Blend(also very nicely priced), Cab Sauv, Tempranillo(which they want to be known for) and a delicious Syrah. Their winemaker has been named one of the people to watch. Tasting room staff is very friendly and knowledgable. Nice cheese and meat available for purchase. They give tours and encourage you to linger around the property. Very relaxed, inviting vibe. I will be back and encourage others to give it a try.

My wife and I were in the area celebrating our anniversary and came across an article about Pinzgauer Tours at Six Sigma. The Pinzgauer vehicle at Six Sigma is a tool to take passengers on a tour to some of the vineyards on their 4300 acre ranch. Do not expect off-roading as the trails/roads are well maintained in a rugged, dry, and very beautiful setting. We took a picnic lunch and sat on the front porch of their tasting room which is an old stage stop sitting under some giant 100+ year old coast oaks. Hospitality was excellent and they were offering tastings of 5 – 6 of there wines. The ranch is definitely rustic, a bit dusty, and a very nice change from the typical Napa/Sonoma Valley wineries. It is a working cattle operation(sheep too I think), with over 3000 acres of it’s property shifted to conservancy. Home to bears, bobcat, mountain line, wild turkeys, etc., you might have the opportunity to see some cool things. On our tour we were in the middle of a 95 degree day so it was limited to some turkey’s, birds, and livestock. The tour covered a lot of history of the ranch as well as quite some discussion and tasting of the raw grapes varieties up in the upper vineyard. I actually learned some new things from the tour.(They do not water the vines until they put a couple of the leaves into a pressure chamber and it takes a certain pressure to force the moisture out of the grape leaf. Low pressure too much watering, high pressure not enough watering.) I grew up a wine brat in the Napa Valley and have many wineries as customers and we always end up with some of their wine. Very rarely do I need to purchase wine. I say this so that you understand that when I say that after my tasting I went inside and purchased bottles of the Six Sigma wine, it speaks for itself! They have done their wines right. The Sauvignon Blanc was crisp and refreshing. What was even better was their Bootleg Sauvignon Blanc made for their wine club where they actually ferment the Sauvignon Blanc with it’s skins and seeds(like you would for a red wine). Finished off my wine purchase with their 2007 Cabernet which was very smooth and didn’t carry the really strong tannin signature so commonly found in the Napa Valley. Picnic on a historic ranch with a Pinzgauer, good wine, good company… nothing better on a Saturday afternoon.

So, one of the first things you notice is the washboard road. It’s ok. Just keep going. No, trust me — just keep going. It is so worth it. Down a dusty road, on 4300 acres complete with free range cattle and a couple of herding dogs, sits an inviting building with a wide wrap-around porch and shady oak trees. The staff is as inviting as the scene, and the wines are wonderful and affordable. On our last trip we tasted a truly, truly amazing tempranillo here — and got an unexpected treat, a barrel sample offered up by the young, friendly winemaker. Six Sigma is a place to relax, so try to give yourself some time to sit on the porch and enjoy the scenery. We haven’t been here for any of the food/wine pairings, but they are evidently amazing too.

If you come here, prepare yourself. This is not just a destination. Its also about the journey. You travel a dusty, gravelly drive into the heart of the golden California hills that surround Clear Lake, studded with ancient oak trees. Past cattle ranches, sheep grazing on golden grass, egrets, little ponds, a deer or two, until you finally arrive, 2+ miles later, at a small ranch house with a couple of rustic rocking chairs on the front porch and a cozy fire inside in the fireplace. The gentle sheep herding dog is the official greeter. Our dog, Lilly pup, was acknowledged, by being ignored. That’s a good thing. Warning. The old oak tree out front dares you to stand or park underneath, as it randomly pelts the ground with its ammo, fiercely plump acorns. Loud plunk, plunk, plunks in rapid succession. Inside the house, you will meet some of the most energetic, enthusiastic, friendly winemakers around. Their flagship wine is a cabernet sauvignon that was rated with 94 points this year. A Living Social deal brought us here with a promise of three bottles of wine to take home, including one of that fabulous cab, and free tasting, and a pleasant recourse. Allow plenty of time, and treat yourself to a visit. Your journey will be well rewarded.

We had decided to go to the winery as we have tried the wines before in local Sacramento Restaurant, Enotria Wine Bar. It was off the beaten path, and along the way we even reconsidered when it seemed like we might be lost. Low and behold we were on the right path and ended up at the winery after a short drive. You drive down a dirt road for a couple miles and you start to get the impression of how big this ranch truly is. Once we arrived we were graciously greeted by a large man in a cowboy hat, named Walt. I began wondering if Walt knew anything about wine, but I was quickly snapped into shape with his knowledge and wit. He was incredible. My fiancé was at ease and we sat on the patio for a tasting. It was different than we have ever experienced as we sat and Walt came to our table on the porch and poured wines for us. He brought a nice board over with fresh figs, cranberries and almonds and we began to taste. We were very excited when Kaj, the owner showed up with his daughter to say hello. We met them and talked shop with Kaj for what seemed like an hour. I was blown away with his credentials, reporting directly to Jack Welch at GE and CEO of one of their companies for nearly 25 years! WOW. It is fascinating to know the pedigree behind the man and winery. I can’t imagine after tasting all their wines and talking with Walt and Kaj that they wouldn’t be a huge success. Their wines, and our experience was. If you’re looking for a nice drive, sitting down in complete relaxation WITHOUT all the pretentiousness you’d find in say, Napa. check out 6 Sigma. You will enjoy a peaceful time sipping wine and soaking in all that beauty up there. all 4300 acres! Amazing place.

I dragged hubby out here because of the name. He is a business student who got a kick out of the idea behind this winery. Every little sign along the driveway(something like 3 miles worth) made him laugh. Walt poured for us, along with another group of people(locals and some friends of theirs) and I swear it felt like we were at a backyard picnic. We had such a great time talking about the wine, the Clear Lake area, the ranch(which contains the vineyards and some sheep and dogs and stuff)… very welcoming. We brought home the oak-aged Sauvignon Blanc. Much to Walt’s dismay(he is a fan of their steel-barrel variety)

Definitely one of the top wineries in Lake County producing affordable wines. Kaj, the owner, gives a great personalized tour with tastings on the front porch. Best of all, the wines are not overpriced like in Napa. The cuvee piqué-nique is a great value blend. If you’re looking for something for your cellar check out the tempranillo. on a hot summer day definitely buy a bottle of the sauvignon blanc. However, my favorite is their rose which is dry and pairs with so much. So if you have time and wanna see what Napa was like in the 60s and 70s; not so commercialized and rural, then check out this must see estate where more land is dedicated to preservation than to wine making.

If you are in search of great wines, but tired of the tour-bus traffic jam in Napa Valley, this is the place to check out. Six Sigma Ranch and Vineyards in Lake County sits on over 4000 acres of pristine hills, streams and trees, and produces excellent wines from Sauvignon Blanc you can find on the menus of Boulevard in SF or Waldorf Astoria in NY to Tempranillo that recently scored 91 points in the Wine Enthusiast. This is a family operation, so be sure to give them a heads up you are planning to come by, but it’s an awesome experience for both the wine and nature aficionados alike.
