Food is really good and fresh. The wait time can be a bit rough. They only have one cook, it seems to be. If you go when it is busy you will have to wait a bit longer then usual. Is the food worth the wait? I think so because it is really good. The prices are really fair as well. The hours are not that great though. Wish those could change.

I have to agree with most everyone, the food and service is great. But they really need some help with the ambience. Lower the lighting and please get rid of the ear-piercing doorbell!

Here’s the good news and the bad news: Funmi is pretty much the only one making your food back in the kitchen. This is good news because Funmi is an amazing chef who has yet to make a less than delicious meal in her life. The bad news is that your food will take a while(especially if the place is busy) because she’s doing it all! It’s well worth the wait, though. I live out of town now, but when I come home, my dad takes me to Funmi’s – sometimes twice in one week. My dad is almost 70 and not all that adventurous when it comes to food, but he is addicted to Funmi’s cooking! This makes me feel good too because it’s all very healthy and made from scratch. They’re great about accommodating whatever spice level you want, so feel free to bring your curmudgeonly older relatives to enjoy the home-cooked west African food! I’ll agree with the other reviewers that the ambiance doesn’t do justice to the quality of this food. Still, it’s a clean space and not at all run-down – just a little sterile looking. The wait staff is always really nice too. The pricing is absolutely reasonable for the quality and novelty of the meals you get. If you’re put off by the ambiance or the wait, you can always get takeout. This is a hidden gem, so I’m hoping that it sticks around(especially for my dad’s sake)!

This is a little hidden gem. Friendly service, authentic Nigerian cuisine, and the owner is the sweetest lady ever. I ordered the sweet potato mix with tilapia and fried plantains. It was so flavorful and the sauce was outstanding. Spicy– but not too spicy. I would give the food 4 stars. The reason Funmi’s is receiving 3 stars is the atmosphere and the pricing. Our entrees were about $ 15 each and though tasty– not worth nearly the price of an upscale restaurant entrée. If they changed the décor and lowered the prices a bit, it would make a huge difference.

Excellent food! There is absolutely no atmosphere in this tucked away café, but once you order the zobo tea and the mixed appetizer the experience speaks for itself!

Funmi’s would be a great project for a restaurant makeover reality show or an entrepreneurship MBA class. Basically, the food is outstanding, and the owner/operators are very welcoming and hospitable, but much about the place seems misconceived. The bright fluorescent lighting is harsh, the menu is a somewhat confusing, the ambiance is sparse and uninviting, the furniture is low-grade, and the prices seem more befitting of a more refined mid-range restaurant. Also, the tucked-behind-a-strip mall location has led more than one person I know to wonder aloud whether or not Funmi is even still operating. The food is good enough, and competition is non-existent enough, for Funmi to remain viable in spite of the weaknesses in its model. Still, I would love to see the place reinvent itself and thrive…

This rating is solely for the food because it is sooooo delicious. If I were to subtract anythig, it would be 1 start for the REALLY bright lights in the restaurant. Thus restaurant is located in the Gardiner Lane shopping Center in a small driveway next to Buckheads. Search for it and try this place. It’s wonderful! This time, I had the jollof Rice and plantain with goat meat. Its actually fried, succulent goat meat stewed in rich tomato sauce paired with hot, fresh plaintains. As always, it was delicious. I have never had anything on the menu that was not delicious. I will continue to eat here.

Just awesome. The food was too good and beyond my expectations. Peri Peri and goat stew with jollof rice were just irresistible

Great food, friendly service, reasonable prices. It’s very rare to find a good goat meat dish, but Funmi’s did not disappoint. The Tanzanian stew was also fantastic. It may sound like a strange thing to praise, but their flatbread was actually really good, and a great compliment to the hearty stews. It’s chewy in the center and crispy on the outside. Definitely recommend!

Funmi’s has the kindest and most friendly service you can find in Louisville. Literally all of their vegetables are delicious and Ms. Funmi cooks the best peri peri chicken this side of the Atlantic. Highly recommended. Hard to find because of the location but more than worth it.

Great little find. The Tanzanian Stew is moist and well-textured with many different flavored. The Goat and plantains was thoroughly satisfying and flavorful. The service was attentive but not overbearing or intrusive. Dishes run about $ 8 – 12

I’ve been to Funmi’s Café four times, and the food has been delicious every time. Although they don’t list a kids’ menu, they will offer you child-friendly options if you ask for it. And my kids love their chicken and beef tips with rice, which also makes me happy! The only down side about Funmi’s is that it does take a while to get served. I have a feeling that Funmi is the only one working in the kitchen. Despite the wait, the service is always friendly.

They were out of half the things on the menu and would not even consider a reasonable substitution of slaw for a salad. I tried to order 4 times and was shot down each time because they we re out. If you have a menu, PLEASE have those things. I am heading to queen of sheba since this place can’t manage to feed my family of 3. She lost 60 dollars in an empty restaurant, I was even willing to pay a penalty for substitution. I will never go to this place again.

We stopped by for a few sambusas as they are a favorite of ours. We have never eaten at Funmi’s but heard great things. We tried the beef and the chicken and had them packaged to go. The sambusas were a nice appetizer size, two come in each order with a hot and sour type sauce. They were delicious, the staff was courteous and quick and we will definitely be back to try some other dishes.

Being Nigerian, I was excited to drive through a city bigger than Knoxville to satisfy my Nigerian food craving. Yes, I could cook in my kitchen, save me some money and achieve the same results and that will definitely happen someday. But not today! This restaurant was easy to find. Located in a strip mall. The décor is not fancy but is functional. The food was good. Definitely passed the authenticity test. Lots of options too so that someone who had never had Nigerian food could visit multiple times and try a different meal at each visit. I was also impressed by the many vegetarian/vegan options since Nigeria does not encourage either diet choice culturally. The food is definitely pricy but satisfying. I liked it enough to stop by on my way to and from Indianapolis. A must visit!

Such a sweet owner! Okay, so the food was okay but not amazing but the owner is so sweet it is worth a visit. I think that the food was just different for my palate and may require another visit. Had the appetizer combo platter with sambusa(african empanda), Kelewele(fried plantains) and moin-moin(bean cakes). Sambusa was tasty, kelewele, well can’t mess up fried plantains, and join-moin pretty tasteless to me. Veggie goat stew was a hearty meal of cubes of goat with potatoes, onions, greens and carrots. Actually this was pretty good. The goat was a bit touch to me but my African friend said it was tender. Peri peri chicken marinated in periperi sauce was good and served with rice. Overall, the meal was okay but did not resonate with my taste buds. I will give it another try because I loved the owner! I really wanna like this place.

OHMAN. Delicious. My fiancé and I dined there last night and adored it. It’s a bit off the beaten path, so don’t question the wonderful food you meet inside. The service was warm, quick, and appreciative, and the prices are just right. We’d never had this cuisine before, although we’re big Ethiopian fans, so we were blown away by the food – from the appetizers to the entrées. We both ordered our dishes with medium spice, and it was perfect. Although we’ve eaten at some of Louisville’s most popular ethnic places, I think we found our absolute favorite. Who cares about the minimalistic décor when the food is phenomenal?

I didn’t know what to expect, since it was my first time ever trying African food. The chef(a sweet lady) came out to talk to us, explained the dishes and made recommendations. My friends and I were delighted. The goat didn’t have that strong flavor of goat meat I’ve had in the past. The stews were seasoned perfectly. You could taste the herbs. The fish was tender and juicy. The plantains were crunchy, fried well with a hint of spice. I loved everything! The fufu was of a texture I’ve never had before– a cross between rice and something else. I definitely recommend it! I might be biased since this is the only place I’ve tried, but I’ve eaten out a lot and this was good.

I was so excited to try this place when some friends suggested it recently. I’ve had Senegalese and Ethiopian food many times before, so I wanted to see how Nigerian fare compared. Plus, I love trying new things. We went with a large group on a Friday night and they obviously weren’t prepared for us. Only three people total were running the entire establishment to cook, take orders, serve and check people out. It was a disaster. It took 20 minutes before our order was even taken. Then it took more than an hour to get our food. The delay could’ve been somewhat forgiven if the food had been great, but I found it to be mediocre at best. We had the chicken kabobs and plantain cubes for appetizers and the lamb dish and the house vegan stew for our entrees. The stew was tasteless and the rice that accompanied it was no better. The plantains were decent. Nothing that we had was good enough to make us risk trying it again. I’m disappointed since I had such high hopes of finding a new ethnic gem.

Met up with a friend for dinner and we decided we wanted to try something new/unusual/exotic and she just happened to have a groupon for Funmi’s. The atmosphere leaves something to be desired… it is tucked in the Gardiner Lane shopping center-strip mall-y thing. It looks like it might have previously been a nail salon. Very stark and fluorescent. BUT the food makes up for it. I got the Prawns Mozambique. They had a distinct cinnamon flavor to them, but with enough spice and heat that the sweetness wasn’t off-putting. They were delicious. My friend got the Lamb Asaro. The meat was crazy tender and tasted spectacular. I tried her plantains as well, and while I have never liked plantains they may be the best I’ve had in the area(I keep trying to convince myself each time they come with a meal that if I just try them one more time, I will suddenly love them…) Unexpected, a little different(but still accessible for the not-so-adventurous types), and delicious!
