I happen to be downtown riding along with my dear friend, he was gathering some clothing for his client for the SAG awards. He suggested this spot for lunch so I decided to give it a go. I was very impressed with the service from the jump. We were seated immediatly and I couldn’t contain my excitement after seeing the food on other tables and the service. The lady that sat us was named Candace and apparently she is the Owner. I was going on and on about how I was impressed with everything so far and she explained that she was the owner of the restaurant and it’s a family business. EVENBETTER! The food: Now I“m a fan of Chin Chin Chinese chicken salad, have been for 20 years believe it or not, this salad is much better and light. We shared the egg rolls, HuGE egg rolls! I decided to try the orange chicken, SODAMNGOOD! I was very impressed and will be back. I’m already spreading the word! WORD!

I have been a new moon customer for over 15 years, every time I have lunch here with my friends we are very satisfied and live the sizzling shrimp soup, shrimp house salad instead of the chicken and I can go on about the menu. It’s always fresh and tastes great. The amount of food for the price is really good, we usually order one of each for the 4 of us and there is still plenty left over. Soo it’s a good spot for fast yummy Chinese.

Finally got a chance to try out this place on my lunch break. Fast and effective service. It looks like they do a lot of catering because when we walked in most of the tables in the front of the restaurant were occupied with to go orders and large foil pans full of food. We ordered the chow mein with just beef and also an order of their version of orange chicken. The food came out on time, but it wasn’t too hot(minus one star) I’d say it was more on the luke warm side. Regardless, the food was tasty. I split the dishes with my co-worker and we had enough for lunch for the next day. We ended up paying about $ 15 each including tip. Pretty good lunch spot if you’re in the area and have a hankering for Chinese.

My good friend brought me here for lunch. He raved about it all day and I realized why-it’s really good! I guess the family has been in the restaurant business for decades and they really know their stuff. We ordered the Chinese chicken salad and it was enough for two people. They really load up the plate. The service was good and super-friendly. Price was on par with DTLA and I’m looking forward to my next visit!

I will start this review by saying I was born and raised in Queens, New York so my expectations for Chinese food is always high. Due to the rating I figured I’d give this place a try. The customer service was great but the food was simply OK. I ordered pork fried rice, Kung Pao chicken and an egg roll. The egg roll is named the New York egg roll and let me tell you, it is not an egg roll that looks like anything I’ve had. It’s more like a fried pastry roll that was sliced and inside is veggies and shrimp. It was pretty good but it’s not a traditional egg roll. The Kung Pao chicken and fried rice were both lacking in flavor. I’m not sure if it’s lack of soy sauce but it seemed like they were missing a major ingredient that I can’t put my finger on. For the price, I expected better tasting food. I won’t be ordering from here again unfortunately.

I tried this place last friend when our office decided to order in some Chinese food. I looked at the Unilocal page and menu and it looked decent and gave it a go to try it out. I was disappointed in the quality and amount of food for the price I paid for. They say you can order a half of anything on the menu which logically to me and others in my office meant that it would be half the cost of the plate… no that was not the case. They charge you slightly less than the full price, its off by a $ 1 or $ 2 so might as well get the full plate. That should have been my first red light. Second I received my I ordered a half order of lettuce chicken wraps and won ton soup. The soup was decent, needed some added flavor to it and I added soy sauce to it. The chicken was minced, had bell peppers, onions and the was assembly yourself style so I got different containers and then had to arrange it myself. I tried another co workers spicy chicken which was flavorful but it was out weight but all of the food that was a letdown. And for being known for their Chinese Chicken Salad and boosting so much about it… that was a big let down. My coworkers said it was not fresh, didn’t have all the ingredients on the menu(missing mandarins) and the flavor wasn’t all that great. Overall I would not try this place again, just too simple for me.

the new moon is L-shaped. i wasn’t expecting that. kind of neat. ordered wally’s shrimp, chicken lo mein and new york-style egg rolls. i’ve never had such large egg rolls before and they tasted pretty much like regular egg rolls. but because they’re the size of burritos and require a knife and fork, they fail at egg rolls’ primary function: conduit for dipping in plum sauce or hot mustard. you kind of have to drizzle. the lo mein was the best dish i tried, lots of fresh veggies and the chicken was tender and delicious. wally’s shrimp was also tasty, but unremarkable. basically just shrimp and garlic on a bed of some pretty sad iceberg lettuce. the problem with both of these entrees wasn’t necessarily that they weren’t good, they just didn’t taste like chinese food. the lo mein tasted more like an italian pasta dish and wally’s shrimp tasted like something you’d get at a seafood restaurant… not a chinese seafood restaurant, a nondenominational seafood restaurant. so the new moon is recommended for those who don’t love chinese food. or those who love oddly shaped restaurants.

Everything is delicious. Good friendly service. The spot in Montrose has a more elegant atmosphere and they’re off shoot at 7th& Fig is also good but I wish they served more variety. Every time I go it’s the same menu, but yummy… well, the fried rice is generic.

1 out of 3 = fail. My siblings and I have been on a search for this childhood dish we loved… it was called Peking Beef in Mandarin at this family owned and operated joint called Shan Hu. Battered and fried beef, tossed in a deep red, deliciously perfect sweet and spicy sauce and chopped scallions. Wowsa!!! Crisp, sweet, spicy, fresh… the best qualities of a hot fried Northern meat dish. It’s a tricky dish, as some of that spice is from hot mustard, not peppers and some of the sweetness is from fruit To New Moon, we tried the Crispy Orange Peel Beef with hot mustard on the side and felt like the taste was getting in the ballpark. Just like any good Foodiana Jones, we had to go back for more… oh the disappointment! Both hot dishes we ordered to go were delivered late and cold — it was raining, but that’s no excuse. The manager did replace the dishes, but we ate 2 hours late. Eating well requires the eyes, tongue, stomach, AND the heart… mine was a little soured, so the experience was definitely diminished. We decided to give it another go for lunch. My brother can’t have brown rice, so I ordered white. Delivered on time? Check! Crispy Orange Peel Chicken hot and fresh? Check! Fresh White Rice? Cheeeccccck out this mushy brown crap they sent us!!! OLDMUSHY brown rice instead of white rice. NY style eggroll was also extremely cabbage heavy with so little shrimp and chicken that my brother commented, «I thought it was a veggie egg roll.»:( Sorry, New Moon, restaurants in my book need good food and consistency. A 1 out of 3 record will prevent us from ordering from you when it counts.

While wandering about my new neighborhood in DTLA, I came across this place. I was starving and in the mood for something sweet, yet savory… Mmmmmm… Chinese food. Started off with the Shrimp Rangoon and then enjoyed Shelby’s Sweet and Spicy Chicken… Not too sweet… Not too spicy. Plentiful servings, reasonable prices. Win! Service was great and there was a really nice woman, who seemed to be in charge(owner maybe?), walking around, talking with customers and what not. She saw I was looking for the restroom and paused her conversation with someone else to help me out. Will definitely be coming here again!

Came here because my office wanted Chinese food for lunch. One BIG problem… one of my co-workers have food allergies and she’s gluten-free. After searching for a while on Unilocal,I found New Moon… ONLY Chinese Restaurant with GLUTEN-FREE dishes. If you’re eating Chinese food with someone who has food allergies and they can’t have soy sauce then… DON’T EATWITHTHEM! It’s almost silly to want Chinese food WITHOUT soy sauce but a place does exist my fellow Unilocalers… it’s The New Moon restaurant! The dishes we got were good but not great. Nothing really stood out. It did satisfy the Chinese food craving but I felt something was missing. Maybe it’s the GLUTEN!!! As for service, it was a lot friendlier than the restaurants in Chinatown(white waiters and waitresses). However parking is horrible because its street parking only or pay a ridiculous amount at one of the nearby lots.

Sooo for the first time in LA I can say I am well beyond impressed with this Chinese food! For the past three years I’ve searched & searched for good quality Chinese. Growing up in SACRAMENTO we had really really GOOD Chinese. Anyways, this is the first place I can say that I’ve ordered in LA for delivery that I was impressed with! Now the breakdown of what I ordered: Honey Glazed Chicken with Orange Zest — 5 stars, very flavorful & yummy Rice — 5 stars, can’t really mess up rice NYC Styled Egg Rolls(Veggie) — 5+++++ Stars, probably my favorite part of the meal. Chicken Chow Mein — 3.5 stars, although It had plenty of flavor and plenty of chunks of chicken as well as fresh steamed vegetables, the noodles style was what made me not care to much for this. I prefer thicker noodles Nonetheless, I will definitely be returning again to try some other things on their menu. P.S delivery was $ 5 but was fast & still fresh as if it was straight out the kitchen

Give credit where it’s due and give New Moon five stars for inventing the Chinese chicken salad. 45 yrs later, and few can compare. Theirs is incredibly good and yet so simple: iceberg, cilantro, wontons, sesame and chicken. The small portion is HUGE. I asked the server if he made a mistake and brought the wrong size. «Nope,» he said with a laugh. «That’s the small one.» I also had the vegetable gyoza. They had a nice, thick, well-done skin with yummy vegetables inside. The sauce was quite sour. Cover them with sriracha. The service was pleasant, and I like their open kitchen. They need someone who specializes in aqua culture, because all their fish have been dying. It’s a really pretty tank, too. The Chinese know that a fish tank turns on the money, so they better get on it!

Favorite Chinese restaurant in Los Angeles! They have the best dishes and THEBESTCHINESECHICKENSALAD! I’m drooling right now! Since I’m always in the area for work, this is a great spot for lunch! The servers and owner are super nice! Everyone is very welcoming. Cons: parking is always a pain… But trust me, it’s worth it!!!

Mmmmm… Chinese chicken salad with no cilantro. I love me a no frills chinese chicken salad… and this is legit perfect. Crunchy fried wonton, chopped chicken, and theses fried white noodles. Unless you have a bottomless pit of a stomach, opt for the small size and ask for extra plum sauce on the side. This place is BUSY. I came in a little before noon, and it took about 20 minutes for my to go order, although they were very, very nice about checking in on my order as I waited. I would suggest phoning your order in and picking it up. PARKING. NONE, you’re downtown, son.
