One star just because the tacos de canasta are good. Service is horrible!!! The guy serving the waters acted like if he didn’t speak Spanish with my mom, turned around and spoke to a guy in Spanish!!! Wtf is that! If they speak to you in Spanish is for you to respond in Spanish! Very unprofessional!!!

Came in today looking for a quick burger bite as the surrounding business don’t take Visa and I hate being charged $ 5 at the ATM Actually went next door but they only had fish burgers – not a fan and he told me to come next door. Place had just opened and they were nice when I came in. Asked for a simple burger special. I tried to pay but the lady at the counter told me to pay after I’ve had my meal. Because I was ready to pay once my meal was at the table I was again told to enjoy my meal and then pay. But I left my wallet at the register. Another guest was paying for his meal and came up to me and asked if it was my wallet-life saver! I thanked him and was grateful for the honesty, ambience and environment of this establishment. My food was decent-just a burger and fries. I tried some green sauce they had but lacked salt(then again I’m sick so taste buds might be off). Still I enjoyed the food, music in the background(reminded me of home) and the peace of dining here on a rainy LA morning. Thank you El Atoron.

Lucky me! I would NEVER have known about the amazing, tender tacos de canasta al vapor at Tacos El Ataron has I not gone to the Alameda Swap Meet. For some reason, tacos de canasta, or «basket tacos» aren’t all the rage in Los Angeles, even though they’re apparently popular eats in Mexico(D.F.). Usually sold and eaten in the mornings, these tacos aren’t prepared right on the spot, but are steamed beforehand(as tamales are, hence the verbage«al vapor», meaning steamed), and sold for breakfast. Here at tacos El Ataron you can get tacos de canasta, or «basket tacos» stuffed with chicharron, papa, or frijoles(pork, potato, or beans, respectively). Salsas are nice, an the vinegar-y, Mexican-oregano twinged marinated carrots and onions that they allow you to self-serve with them is wonderfully reminiscent of the cabbage curtido served with Salvedorean pupusas. These tacos can be eaten in two bites, and are sold 6 for $ 4. Go get ‘em, they’re great!
