When it comes to my natural hair I don’t like to play around. I went to get my hair dyed, cut and styled. My stylist did not do a good job. I feel like I wasted my money. Dye: The color began to fade not even a week after I got it done. My natural hair is dark brown and I wanted a honey brown. When I went back to complain she said that maybe the color was fading due to the products I used. Products SHE recommended! If she knew that the products could affect the color why recommend those products? Inquiring minds want to know… Cut: She cut my hair extremely unevenly. In the middle my hair was a lot shorter than it was on the sides. I went back and she cut it properly this time but now my hair is shorter in the process. Style: I decided to do this all on a whim because I was going to a concert in a couple of days. I wanted a cornrow braid out. I’m fairly new to being natural, but everyone knows that if you’re going to style your hair you need some type of styler so that it holds. I really wish I would’ve said something but I figured she knew what she was doing. She cornrowed my hair on blown out, dry hair with nothing on it, not even a leave in conditioner. Fast forward to the next day. An HOUR before the concert I undo my cornrows and it looks nice. It’s fluffy and sort of wavy looking. One twenty minute über ride later, my hair is a giant dry frizz ball and it looks like I did even try to style it. When I sent her a picture of what had happened she told me that it was because I didn’t put perm rods on the ends… as if that has anything to do with the fact that the style did not hold anywhere on my hair she braided. All in all I would not recommend this place. The people are friendly and kind but that’s about it. I feel like my stylist didn’t want to admit that she messed up on my style or color. The fact that I had a picture of how crooked my hair looked is the only reason as to why I got to go back in and get my hair re-cut.

I took out loc extensions and went to MHR to get my hair cut, dyed and styled by Tamiko. I was not disappointed! I showed her two different pictures and asked for something in the middle and that is exactly what I got. Plus I had used a black rinse within the last 6 months, but she worked with me to get the color I wanted while also not damaging my hair. The shop itself was clean, open and airy. Plus there is a garage and free off street parking. Everyone was extremely nice and the whole place was very welcoming. Only reason I am giving it a 4 instead of a 5, is that the prices are steep, not unreasonable, but steep. Between walking in the door and leaving, I felt like a completely new person! I would highly recommend MHR.

UNPROFESSIONAL&UNIMPRESSIVE (1.) No greeting from anyone upon entering the salon (2.) No apology for running over 30 minutes late for my scheduled appointment. (3.) Received annoyed looks and over heard negative comments from the stylist and their customer when asked how much longer the wait would be. (4.) No water available for customers anywhere in sight NOTE: While waiting I had the opportunity to see the stylists at work. Probably acceptable for young customers and/or those not used to top notch work and/or have minimal funds to spend on their hair.

$ 1400 for their Goddess Faux Braids? Thumbs down for the excessive and exorbitant price gouging alone.

Love this place! They’ve moved to Pico and Hauser — a beautiful, big space. I can’t tell you who’s my favorite, but all the work I see leaving the shop is beautiful. The Love is a bonus. My individual braid installs are quick and worth EVERY penny. Book your appointment far in advance.

1st time client, I was able to skip the in-person consultation because I live pretty far from the shop. I set my appointment through phone calls/emails with a girl named Shelby… No complaints there. I arrived to ample parking and was greeted at the salon by many smiling faces(very good sign) very cute, chic, and clean salon. I can tell the owner takes pride in her brand. I had stylist Kelsey who gave me a flat twist out, final result was awesome. thanks MHR

I had high hopes for this place… I was disappointed because I had a scheduled hair consultation but that is not what I received. I did not mind waiting while they finish up the other clients but their definition of a consultation an mine must have gotten lost in translation. Looking in a book to pick a hair style isn’t a consultation. Touching my hair would be a start to a consultation. I definitely didn’t have to come in if you were going to talk to me from behind the chair while doing someone else’s hair who was giving facial expressions like hurry up and stop stopping. The people in there are nice it’s small and cramped but that’s not why it gets a single star. Wasting my time on my day off, asking me to sign a cancelation policy several times as if I didn’t hear it the first time, not giving me a proper consultation, and wantin my time. I can’t get my time back! I was really disappointed I really want to figure out my hair. Just wished it turned out differently. Hope others have a better experience than I.

Definitely go to Mahogany Hair if you want or have natural hair. Erinn is absolutely the best hair stylist I’ve ever had! She takes the time to get to know you and your hair. She’s honest about what will look good on you and won’t just tell you anything. She just did two stranded twist extensions and I love them.

I’ve been natural since 2003 and was blessed enough to find Dr. Kari around that same time. Having had my hair weaved, braided by so many other professionals, my hair and scalp was severely damaged before I had my hair done by Dr. Kari. I often wonder what my hair would be like had I not found her, but I’ll just focus on the positive and bright side of things… because I am so glad that I did! Hands down, Dr. Kari is THEBEST in the natural hair game! Not only is she talented and creative when it comes to hairstyles, but she also has a wealth of knowledge and expertise when it comes to hair, haircare, and hair health! How many people can actually say that their haircare stylist educate them every time they get their hair done??? I mean true education! From the basics of what hair even is, how it grows, how to maintain its integrity and promote its strength and health, the best products to use for your hair and scalp! I mean, I can go on and on! And might I also add, she CARES! Truly cares about your hair… and scalp! I have never had a more gentle braider… my scalp is never sore… she never tugs, yanks, or pulls! It’s just pure relaxation when she’s working her magic on my hair. It’s clear that I love Mahogany… and am blessed to have Dr. Kari as my stylist. Overall, ALL of the stylists at Mahogany are amazing! I trust each one of them to not only keep my strands looking fresh, but to keep them healthy and strong! Los Angeles has a jewel with Mahogany! I can guarantee that you will not be disappointed!

I’m extremely particular about my hair and when I found MHR they exceeded my expectations. Punctual, thorough and very clean, Erin blessed my crown for the Gawds! While my 1st time was a trial for my wedding hair needless to say I have entrusted MHR for my special day. I got medium sized tailbone braids and with her assistant I was in and out in less than 5 hours. They give complimentary shampoos for first time clients and do a beautiful job. Highly recommended making appt in advance as they fill up quickly.

This salon owner is the only liar here as others have complained. I knew exactly the style I wanted and that’s not what I was given. I tried to resolve it by paying more for the same style twist done by a second stylist and I was satisfied because she didn’t give me some ghetto hairstyle for trash. You jerked me around and didn’t make any real effort to resolve this and your receptionist was extremely catty with me. And you my dear are the liar because photos of the bald patches don’t lie but your mouth does. i

I recently got my big chop from here. It went great. I told her to chop off all she needed to in order for all of the relaxer to be completely out. I went in with a picture or 2 of how if like the cut to look and left there feeling more than happy… I felt liberated. I felt unstoppable. I even did a wash’n go 2 days later and didn’t mind my natural look/texture at all. I wore it with pride. Erinn was very knowledgeable and she had no problem sharing what she knew with me. It was a great experience. I’ll be back to get my trim in 5 weeks and I’ll update my post with those results.

Started my locs here in May 2014. Great experience! After wanting locs for several years, and going in for consultations at several salons that just did not get it, I chose to go to Mahogany Hair Revolution even though I lived in Oakland. I had been there before for two strand twists and I knew that they KNOW natural hair. I came in to have a consultation with Dr. Kari a couple weeks prior to getting my hair done. She was very thorough in reviewing my hair and scalp history, and took special care to answer all my questions and make recommendations. Very important when getting a permanent style like locs! Erinn did my hair, taking her time to get everything right and being careful with the parts of my hair that needed it. Everywhere I go, I receive compliments on my hair. They did a great job and starting my locs here is the BEST hair decision I’ve ever made. Thanks Mahogany Hair Revolution!

I had the same experience as reviewer Megan B. I went in to get my hair shaped/cut and left feeling like I got that until I started really going through my hair. I admit I had some spots with heat damage but I most of my hair was in great shape. There are more uneven spots in my hair now than before I went in. Very disappointing. The stylist cut off SEVERAL inches of my hair for no reason. My shape is worst than it was before. I would post pictures but it’s too sad. I wouldn’t have mind losing the inches if I actually got a shape but I didn’t.

It was a very nice salon and everyone was very nice and professional. I let my stylist know what I wanted and she took her time with my hair however I asked her for a trim. oh lord why did I do that she took off about three and a half inches off my hair she was only supposed to trim the ends. I couldn’t tell how much she had taken off without ruining the style. So I took her word for it when I got home and looked at my hair the next day I was very very disappointed. Now I will have to grow my hair back out in protective styles for at least another year before it gets back to the length that it was.

Educational, informative, and gifted. Only person who I trusted to cut my locs after 7 years and inform me on how to take care of my new, short ‘fro. Thanks, Dr. Kari.

****EXTRAORDINARY Stylist** had my coifed in a braided protection style today by Carol. I LOVEIT ! I was initially apprehensive because of a previous disappointment at an OC salon. So thankful for the efficient and polished results that it is, without a doubt, worth the drive from OC. My husband loves it also ! Phew .my only regret, I should have tipped more, next time.

How many times have you been to a cosmetologist who is also a tricologist? Me neither. Dr. Kari Williams is all that and more! I am a DIYer when it comes to my natural hair and have been trimming my own hair myself for several years(I know, I know) I put myself on a hair cutting punishment, after I butchered my hair, and 8 months later I treated myself to a professional. I was blessed with a same week appointment/consultation and when I arrived I was greeted

This one star review is for Ursula. I hate my haircut. It took me 10 months of protective styling and no direct heat to grow my hair to the length it was when I stepped into Mahogany. I asked to retain my length, I just wanted my floppy curly mane shaped up so that it wouldn’t be floppy. 30 minutes later, my hair was shorter than when I’d started growing it out 10 months ago. I hate this haircut. It juts out on the sides, and the back is not shaped in a way that I like. I told Ursula I hadn’t been putting direct heat on my hair, but for some reason she decided to blow dry it straight to cut it(?) As a result, the cut doesn’t work with the varying curl patterns I have on my head. Not to mention it’s shorter than what I asked for. Ursula put flat twists in my head afterwards. The next day when I took them out, my hair was so oily that my hands were completely greasy by the time I finished. Ugh. Now I have to wash my hair again. And I never got the«consultation» I asked for. I was looking for tips and pointers on products and techniques I could use with my curl patterns. I’ve been searching high and low for someone who could cut curly hair. I was so disappointed, I thought this place was going to be great. Now I have to go back to protective styling because I hate the way my hair looks, and it’s not cute and big anymore :-( On a side note, Ursula was very nice.

Today was my first time there, and all the stylists were really cool and very nice. But I have to be truthful about my experience… First off, I felt like I was a side project for the person I got. My appointment was pushed back to accommodate someone else. I waited 1.5 hours while she worked on someone else, then she rushed through me to get back to that other person. I was getting a trim. She started to blowdry it, then decided to do it wet, and actually sent me out of the salon with my hair still wet(first time in my life this has happened). I had to go to the bank because I assumed they would take credit card, and I didn’t bring enough cash. When I caught my half-dry reflection in the bank window, I felt like an ugly mess. I know I have kinky hair, but I looked Buckwheat crazy!(from the Little Rascals) Once I got back to the salon, I was on the brink of tears, so I handed her the money and ran out to hide somewhere and cancel all my plans for that day. Since I thought I was going to leave the salon feeling like a million dollars, I had arranged to get some headshots, and made plans for dinner & a comedy show… but I felt embarrassed just being out on the street. In the stylist’s defense, she did text me after I left to offer to fix it for free. Plus, when I got to Wholefoods(and my hair dried), all these men kept looking at me really hard, smiling and winking… and 2 women ran up to me to ask me about who does my hair. I told them I just came from Mahogany Revolution. As of now, I still don’t like the way the cut looks, but I applaud her integrity in offering to make sure I was pleased with it(even though I didn’t take her up on the offer)… I might return to another stylist at the other side of the salon for braids or twists, because everyone was down to earth and very nice. Plus their prices are affordable; so I’m sure they’ll be seeing my head of hair for other services on the natural side of the salon. Prior to arrival, I didn’t realize there was a natural side and a chemical side, so I guess I booked with a stylist on the wrong side… ~~~ UPDATE ~~~ It’s the next day, and I’m glad to be rid of all those split ends & learning to work with the new shape. BUT she really did take off a lot since she did it wet & curly. My hair used to rest around my shoulders and stretch to my armpit. Now it rests at my ears and barely stretches to my collarbone… that’s a big difference, even though she only clipped an inch or two(of curly hair). …all because she wanted to rush through me and return to her other client.
