My regular place for bulk herbs used to be Nature Mart in the Los Feliz district, but once it was bought out, nothing has been the same. My «back-up» has been the Jones Grain Mill. They don’t cover the entire range of herbs, but have a reasonable selection, and good prices, and are courteous. And they are in the Grand Central Market, where I frequently shop, so this place is fairly convenient – just a fifteen minute bus or train ride from the Convention Center area. This sure beats the hassle and high prices of herbs in capsules… for the birds!!! Amy’s concern about herbs turning bad – or from a bad source, in my opinion – is unfounded. I’ve never had a problem.

This old-world health food stand is located inside the Grand Central Market just inside the Hill St entrance. They have rows and rows of jars filled with herbs, teas and spices along with herbal remedies and vitamins all at reasonable prices. I love this concept and I love the fact that it’s still in operation. I’ve come here for dried milk thistle, whole flax seeds, chamomile flowers, dried mint, star anise, and a «cold & flu» tea that made me gag at first but felt nice after I got used to the overwhelming taste. So far, I’ve been satisfied with all of my purchases. My main concern about this place is that I have no way of knowing how long these items have been in the jars and if they come from a reputable source. I also wish that the people who work here were more knowledgeable. They couldn’t answer any of my simple questions about their inventory. You’re basically on your own and have to tell them what you want and they’ll get it for you.
