Johanna Borenstein Flutist

Johanna has worked with our son for about a year now and her proficiency in teaching has helped him to advance to the symphonic band at school. Her passion for music in general and the flute in particular has been inspirational and motivational for him and we feel very lucky to have her.

In addition to her extraordinary talent as a flutist, as an instructor Johanna Borenstein inspires her students to enjoy playing and to truly have fun with the process of learning. My daughter has been playing with Johanna for three years, and through that time she has learned very complicated elements of music while enjoying all aspects of learning to read music and play the flute. Some instructors teach merely how to play a song — Johanna teaches how to appreciate music, how to understand and enjoy the complexities of reading music, and she inspires a life-​long love of playing the flute. She doesn’t just teach, she imparts a lifetime of music to her students, which is a true gift that few instructors have.

Johanna has been a wonderful teacher for our daughter for the last 5 years. She provides just the right combination of encouragement and patience. Her enthusiasm for her music is contagious. We are lucky to have met her. Our daughter will be entering a music academy high school this fall.

I cannot describe into words how amazing Johanna is as an instructor, flutist, and friend. Through her teachings, I was able to attend CBDA, CMEA All-​State Bands, SCSBOA Honor Bands, All-​District Bands in high school along with several city orchestras around the Los Angeles area. Not only is she great at teaching how to play the flute, but she shares her joys and passion for all things music, relating classical repertoire to current pop trends. Whether I was interested in having a lesson or not, she always made it interesting and engaging. I never felt lessons to be boring or not challenging enough. Her personality and joy for life and music is so contagious. She was my teacher for 6 years before I continued studying flute in college and graduate school. There were so many times when I begged my parents to let me quit, but I am so glad she waited for and encouraged me to keep playing or else I would have never realized my love for music. I can guarantee you will not have a single complaint once you’ve started lessons with her.

Not knowing much about the flute, we did what we usually do when we feel somewhat lost: we phoned extremely knowledgable friends and recruited their teacher. Johanna is to teaching the flute as Mary Poppins is to nannying. She has worked her magic with our daughter over the past year. Her enthusiasm and love for the instrument has rubbed off on our girl. It is a beautiful thing to hear her progress rapidly and see her working diligently, all while appearing as she has just eaten a spoonful of sugar. Simply cannot make a stronger recommendation.

Johanna is a phenomenal teacher! I have been studying with her for over 6 years, and her love and enthusiasm for the flute has made my musical learning experience extremely enjoyable. She knows exactly how to motivate the young musician, which is no easy task, and I have found her to be such a supportive teacher. Johanna tailors her instruction to each student, and has become a supportive role model for my daughter. As an added plus, students are able to showcase their talents in biannual recitals that she holds at a gorgeous venue in West LA. Highly recommended!

Johanna is the consummate flute teacher. She has been working with my daughter for about two years and her flute has improved dramatically. She is not only a fabulous flutist herself but, more importantly, she really cares about and invests a lot of energy in teaching, teaching techniques, ways of motivating the young flute player. She has great enthusiasm and she makes flute-​playing fun, but also she cares about technique and music theory. Recently, she played in the annual winter recital and it was just so beautiful that I almost cried. She cares about her students and really wants to share the joy of beautiful music with them. Johanna Borenstein is not a good teacher, she is a great one ! I studied many years with a master flute teacher Harold Bennett and Johanna ranks in this category. She knows the instrument thoroughly through her own dedicated studies and passes this knowledge on to her students with superb insight. After being teacher-​less for many years I had developed a host of bad habits when playing and knew I needed to find a good teacher. As Luck would have it I found the best possible teacher in Johanna. Through her guidance and teaching style she has lifted my playing to new heights for which I will be forever grateful.
Younger students who aspire to play the flute professionally or for the shear joy of playing would be wise to start their studies with Johanna. She has what it takes to help her students, no matter what level they are at to realize their full potential.
