I know not to expect good service at Chinese places so I didn’t have a bar for that. We were craving dim sum and decided to try it here. I can’t imagine this place open before 9am so I’m guessing they might have opened at 9am or 10am on a Sunday. Dim sum is normally served until 2 or 3 and we arrived at 1230pm. When we attempted to order our dim sum, we were informed half the offerings were unavailable. The fresh juices were also unavailable. Ok… so what do you have… We proceeded to order the little that we could. We ordered fried wontons and egg rolls as appetizers. It felt like a bit of a wait between the appetizers and dim sum. Don’t get the wontons, it’s more fried than anything else. When our food arrived, I noticed we were missing 2 dim sum items. How did we go wrong… those were the first two items I ordered! I saw our waiter writing as I spoke. Ugghhh! A few bites into our appetizers I flagged down the waiter and pointed out we were missing food. He put the order in right away and arrived at our table shortly after. The size of the dim sum was disappointing. The shrimp dim sum was just shrimp. I expected it to be filled with veggies or something else. I liked the shu mai. Three adults ate at a total of $ 43.

Grimy ass restaurant. Pretty décor and nice, bright ambiance but there is a weird smell that I think is the combination of fumes from cleaning products and food mixing in the air. Glass lazy Susan was really grimy too with sticky residue and fingerprints all over it. Very very inattentive service. We waited 20 min. To place our order and the place was only half full at the time. Even when the wait staff came to take our order she was looking all over the room at other patrons coming in instead of paying attention to what I was saying as I ordered. The server did not bring enough bowls. for our group of 7 so we had to get up and walk across the room to take the two more we needed from a table that was unoccupied. After being here for 60 min. Only half our party has had their food brought to them. Food was really only so-so. .. . definately will not be back. This is a classic case of a restaurant absolutely not having their act together. Not even close.

It was pretty desolated and messy. Well this applies to pretty much every restaurant in Chinatown. The food was average. They should be more clean about everything so it doesn’t feel like I’m sitting in a junk yard.

Food was good, but I found a label in my food and the most they could do was take 1.70 off of our bill. I won’t be coming back.

I was really looking forward to going in there and having a nice meal and instead I felt that the service was so-so, the food was way overpriced the chicken chow mein was just absolutely awful. After that I asked if I could get some boxes to go and the guy put the stuff down on the table, in what I would consider a very non-service oriented way. I don’t know what his intentions were, but if you’ve got three or four people standing around and you don’t have a lot of customers, perhaps helping them with their food and their packaging would go along way to making up for the overpriced mediocre food.

My son’s band played a show at a venue downtown and we wanted to get something to eat after he played so we went to Chinatown as we were both craving Chinese. As was also shared, Yang Chow was closed, so we ended up at Hop Woo. Plenty of free on-street parking. However, I do have to echo almost every single review in that the service was really lacking. We were ignored as a party of two, and the party of five that got seated after us, right behind us, got their food before we did which kind of p’d me off. I ordered Shrimp Fried Rice and my son ordered Shrimp in Soft Noodles and a Coke. The server(female) came back to the table and asked if I wanted Big Shrimp or Little Shrimp in my fried rice. Big Shrimp cost more. I asked what was the difference in size? It turned out that his had the«big» shrimp” and mine had the«little shrimp» — which I had asked for — and they were half the size of the big shrimp. BUT — and this is a big BUT — there were sooooo many shrimp in there, you couldn’t take a bite without getting a couple of shrimp in each bite. So I give the stoic wait staff a pass as the food was good and we ended up taking half of it home.

The price is very reasonable especially for the portion they give. Three people can eat from one item. They also have lunch specials. The seafood soups is delicious, you also have the option of ordering it spicy. If you love sweet like I do try try their honey walnut shrimp, my daughter describes it at exquisite. Their house pan fried noodles and sautéed green beans are also on our top favorite. The service from our waiter was great he always stop by to fill our water glasses before they were empty and checked to see if we needed anything else.

Food was alright. Service was terrible. Serving/price could be better. The booths? Don’t even think about it. Food tasted like normal Chinese restaurants. Not bad but not that great. Service was horrible. I think I asked for water 5 times and they never gave me water. When we were looking at the menu, server came to us and asked«you guys ready?» We said«we’re still loo…» he walks away. He did this twice before we can even ask a question. Serving size is abysmal compared to other restaurants in the area. The served food was literally half the serving of the one pictured. For $ 17 a plate, you’ll expect more. They served it one by one. By the time we got the rest of our food(mind you, they served us an entrée without giving us rice til everything arrived) everything was already cold. Oh. And the booth! Oh God the booth! Can’t even fit in this freaking thing! I’m 5’9″, my mom’s 5’2″ and our feet keep on stepping on each other over how narrow the table is at the booth. Also, they have lunch specials that are reasonably priced which they claim on the menu that they«SERVEDDAILY» … well, except weekends, holidays, and the two weeks of Chinese New Year. So if that’s your definition of «DAILY» then you should be fine. Yeah… No. Just stay away. Do yourselves a favor and go to ABC Seafood or something instead.

Went to Chinatown for the Chinese New Year events, and went here for lunch. Food was good, especially the shrimp in lobster sauce. Servers were on the rude side, but it was very busy. We had to ask for water about 5 times before we got any.

Poor, poor service. They forgot about us the moment they sat us down. Horrible service and the food was not that great. Rude waiters and waitresses. They forgot the food we ordered and we had to keep reminding what we ordered. 10⁄10 would NOT recommend or go back.

After leaving a cute Chinese Market with excellent customer service, I was in a GREAT mood. I thought this restaurant would have the same service. Boy was I wrong! The customer service was awful!!! I gave them one star because the food is great. So, if you don’t mind rude, unprofessional waiters and want yummy food, this place is for you. I prefer good food and excellent customer service. I will NOT return to this place!

$ 9.99 lobster. Not super small either. What a great deal. Most expensive dish we ordered was the garlic crab for $ 36. No frills Chinese restaurant in Chinatown. Parking lot is located in the back. Street parking was not hard to find. Worth it to come and try their $ 9.99 lobster special. They don’t allow take-out, so order in-house and bag whatever you don’t finish. Also ordered their crab and fish soup, roast duck, and sautéed pea shoots. Definitely great for groups. Great service. The waitress came by often to replace our dirty plates. The hallway to the bathroom reminds me of a scene out of a scary movie or maybe it’s just my active imagination. Don’t expect anything overtly fancy. I give it props because they accept credit cards.

Came here to eat a few times cuz we had a Groupon for either $ 26 for $ 35 worth of food or $ 17 for $ 25 worth of food. Ordered everything on the menu and always a different meat option with one dish being all vegetable to balance it out. As a group to eat out late at night. Ordering one extra dish per how many we have. Like if we had 5 people, we order 6 dishes. One being soup, one vegetable, and rest are meats. This time we had walnut shrimp which was a little dry and not as fresh it terms of them battering and cooking it in. Kungpao chicken which didn’t have enough chicken. The chow fun was lots of noodles but didn’t have a Lot of meat. The black bean clams was good but didn’t have enough clams. I guess not to complain too much because it fed all of us. Avg out to be around $ 15 – 17 per person including tip with the Groupon being used.

The food was delicious! If this review was solely on that it would be 5 stars but the service was TERRIBLE! We never got our waters with our meal, we had to keep asking 4 different servers to bring us our rice and each plate was brought out by itself. Overall the service is terrible and we will not be going back

I came here for X’mas dinner. I wanted to show my mother who recently moved to LA from Hawaii the Jewish X’mas experience. The place with better Unilocal reviews had a line out the door and it was far too cold for my mother to wait outside so we decided on Hop Woo with very low expectations. The service was adequate for the price and how busy it is. I ordered Chinese Broccoli with Oyster Sauce, Cod with Black Bean Sauce and Mussels in Spicy Wine Broth with Noodles. The food was surprisingly tasty. You just have to know what to order. I NEVER order off of a lunch or dinner special even at fine dining. If taste is more important than the«deal» to you, it’s always best to go a la carte. OMG I just read someone eles’s review and found out they validate for the $ 5 lot. I think it was $ 5.50 and I paid $ 6. It’s was X’mas after all so I wouldn’t have asked for money back but moving forward, I will!

I came here because I got a groupon. It was a $ 50 groupon for $ 34. It fed 4 people and we had a bunch of food left over. We had 4 entrees and it came to be around $ 50. The food quality was okay. Nothing special really. The prices were okay too but a little on the higher side. Service was like any other Chinese places. They gave us tea and some nuts to start off free of charge and the food came out fast. Overall, it wasn’t anything special but it wasn’t bad. I’m not sure if I’d come again because id probably take the opportunity to experience other places.

After stopping by an event in Chinatown on a Thursday night, a few of us tried to decide where to go for Chinese food. It was around 9 p.m. so quite a few places were closed, but we decided on Hop Woo. It’s an authentic Chinese restaurant complete with Buddha statues, hanging ducks, and a massive menu of meal & appetizer options. Since I’m not an expert on Chinese food and the menu was quite expansive and I didn’t have a chance to thoroughly go over all of the options, I chose chicken chow mein with the skinny noodles. This proved to be a solid choice, the servings are generous and I had a pile of yummy noodles & chow mein to enjoy(and take home). My friends chose seafood dishes and the vegetable fried rice which they also liked. The service was attentive and friendly, they were accommodating with special requests and quick to serve us. They were also kind enough to give us Chinese New Year calendars for 2016– super sweet! My dinner with a drink came out to under $ 10, very reasonable. There is plenty of free street parking in the evenings and they have several tables so it shouldn’t be an issue being waited on quickly.

My dad wanted his beef stew noodle soup so he asked me to drive him here. It’s in Chinatown off of Broadway. There is parking in the back. You pay $ 5 but if you get it validated you get your money back. My dad got his beef stew(minus the spicy) and I got the Shrimp Wonton Noodle soup. These bowls are a hefty portion so they don’t skimp on their portions. The broth was plain but there was a lot of shrimp, wonton and noodles in the soup. The service was a little mixed. Our first server acted like he was super busy but it wasn’t a full house. I ordered some dim sum that he never brought out. Towards the end of our meal another server took over our table and apologized for me not getting my dim sum. I just asked her to remove it from my bill. She was apologetic and gracious so no biggie. I was full from the soup anyway. There’s a lot of options here so I will have to come back and try their entrees.

love love LOVE this restaurant. Definitely a must try when you’re out in Chinatown. I came here last night celebrating my mother-in-law’s birthday. Hop Woo was very accommodating when it came to our huge party of 18. My expectations going in was that they were just going to sit us in two separate round tables. No big deal, and it was not a problem. However they had squeezed a small square table in between the rounds, so that we were all able to sit together! It was very cool of them to make sure we were comfortable. Now on to the food… Family style eating as good as it gets! Why be restricted to one item when you can share multiple with your loved ones? Some entrees that I would come back for more are: Walnut Shrimp Peking Duck Honey Chicken Wings Beef cubes Bok CHoy Seafood Crispy Noodles House Special Lobster w/Noodles Egg foo yoon for Dessert, we had the tapioca pudding with yams & taro. For those not familiar with asian food, don’t knock it till you try it! i killed that thing. you can also check these links out also which intrigued me even more about Hop Woo: They also validate your parking in the back! They are also open late, so I cannot wait until another night of drinking at DTLA so I can head here after!

The last time my boyfriend had Chinese food this bad, there was a fingernail in it. Food was terrible and WAY overpriced. We were better off going to a little mom & pop takeout spot. We ordered orange chicken & sweet & sour pork, which was dry. The shrimp chow mien was so soggy it was basically soup. It tasted like baby vomit. The lobster special my boyfriend ordered was tiny & there was hardly any meat on it. The sauce took away from the little meat was on the lobster. One bite of it & we left. Customer service was horrible too. Everyone there was rude. I don’t know how people come back to this place. On the bright side, the tea bobas were yummy!

I’ve tried a lot of different Thai places in the valley — but this one is the worst I have ever had. I’m sorry, I wish I could say something nice with regards to the food, but it was a deep-fried nightmare. I gave it a college try and attempted to eat it. Even the oil tasted old, like they had been cooking with it all day. I will say the man who delivered the food was very nice and polite. But I learned my lesson and won’t be ordering from here again. I cannot see how people would even consider this halfway decent food unless they have no taste buds.

I genuinely liked this place. It was casual and alil more than the usual hole in the wall but didn’t feel like a hole in the wall. The staff is friendly and it’s really fun. If you want to go to get a good L.A. Chinatown experience… Come here. There is parking across the street. There is also a reasonable to-go counter.

We dined in. After shopping and horrible traffic this place hit the spot. Take out combo meals have a better(cheaper) price and is a better option if your not familiar with the menu and dishes. We ordered the family deal which is around 15 $ per person. Got sweet and sour soup and egg rolls. We then ordered one full sized very large generous entrée each. I ordered shrimp in lobster sauce, everything is made to share see pic… yummyy

I was walking through China Town-famished from looking for the elusive ant chalk. I was immediately drawn into Hop Woo by the $ 9.99 lobster sign outside. It was only after I sat down that I realized that the lobster is ½ pound or less, and it’s only $ 9.99 if you purchase an entrée that’s over $ 10. Why did I fail to check my own review? The lobster was difficult to eat, and we didn’t get any tools to cut the shells. The rest of our order was unremarkable.

With each progressive order, I am steadily becoming more and more enamored with Hop Woo as one of my favorite lunch spots, due to a very favorable flavor/portion-to-price ratio. I’ve always ordered to go(and never dined in) at Hop Woo, so I’m not qualified to comment on the service provided by the wait staff. Having said that, the staff on the other end of the phone line have always been easy and hassle-free to deal with, and I don’t think I’ve ever had to resort to Mandarin to get my order across. My favorites here so include the pan fried shrimp w/walnut in special sauce(#48), deep fried pork chop with Peking sauce(#89), yang chow fried rice(#117), and spicy eggplant w/minced meat(#127 — and it’s actually not spicy at all, thank heavens). All of these are quite flavorful, and served in filling portion sizes. I also enjoy their jelly fish(#21). It appears to only be listed on the dine-in, but the restaurant will apparently make it available to-go just the same. I am not the biggest fan of Hop Woo’s pan fried chicken breast w/lemon sauce & sesame(#78). It’s not bad, but it leaves a *little* something to be desired(I think it’s the watery and light lemon sauce), and I would recommend any of the aforementioned dishes in place of it. Hop Woo is open very late: they close at 1AM on Sundays to Thursdays, and are open until 3AM on Fridays and Saturdays. If you are a late-night glutton like myself, these convenient hours allow for a very appealing alternative to the usual banal 24⁄7 diners and fast food restaurants in the area. For the money, I think Hop Woo is one of the best deals around. Our last order was somewhere between $ 30 – 35 out the door, and included enough food to comfortably feed no less than 3 – 4 hungry people. On that note, I think the best way to enjoy a meal from them is to see if you can get several people to join in on a group order — this will allow you to enjoy a good variety of several dishes within a single meal, yet still keep the price per person at a very affordable level(under $ 10, unless maybe you’re splurging on dishes like lobster).
