If you like whiskey and want to geek out, this is the place for you. Linh is amazing and can talk to you about everything and help guide you through flavor spectra that you prefer. You can get«tasting» pours to try out a ton of different whiskeys without getting hammered. That way you can actually remember what you tried/tasted. The place can’t hold too many people, but that’s by design — it’s best when there are fewer people back there. Aim for off nights like Sunday.

Simply the best whiskey(and whisky!) bar in Los Angeles, period. Huge selection, knowledgeable and friendly staff, swanky vibe. If you know your whiskey, this is your place.

Hostess was lovely but our server didn’t know anything about whisk(e)y. She was supposed to talk to us about our palate. Lol. Sit inside or you’ll miss the«experience.» They didn’t have dry vermouth. When we asked more than one server about it she came back and was like«If you want dry vermouth you can go to Seven Grand.» Like it’s a weird/specific thing to have at a bar? I’ve never had this issue in my many many years of drinking. Drinks are ok but not nearly as good as the Varnish. The seats outside are lame if you’re not a smoker. Never in my life have I ever seen such HUGE ashtrays which I thought was hilarious.

Very nice classy décor and an incredible attentive owner. One major fall back, the usual snobby male host with pretentious LA vibe. It was very unfortunate. Last word from the bar host, «Did you pay your tab??» Really? Let’s not vote for Pedro, the tab keeper.

We had a wonderfully educational tasting on a slow Sunday evening. Neither my husband nor I know our whiskeys well, so we relied on our hostess to cobble together an around the world flight of four relatively accessible but unique whiskeys for $ 40. The tasting room is terrifically ambient and makes for an intimate date night. Just a lovely speakeasy-style space with attentive and informed staff.

Great cigar and whiskey bar. The environment is intimate and warm. Very relaxing and good selection of whiskeys. One of the best bars I’ve been to — great service and great atmosphere.

What an mind blowing experience at the hidden jem Japanese-Style speak easy whiskey bar. From the warm hand towels at start to the night of education as we traveled around the world via whiskey flights. Hard to imagination places like this still exist… Amazed! Jesse, Rob, and Stephanie are stellar

Is there such a thing as too much of a good thing? The service at this upscale speakeasy was so personal last week that it almost felt intrusive. Our server didn’t just give us the expected attention that a first-rate bar or restaurant would give you, but he was literally sitting down with us randomly and hanging out with us throughout our visit. I didn’t mind it(he was knowledgeable and looked like Zac Efron!) but my companion was slightly annoyed. No bother, we laughed about it later. Unless you are a whiskey or bourbon connoisseur you can easily get lost in the menu, so we asked our server to use his expertise and pick us four selections from around the world. We ended up with a flight, of increasing boldness: 1) John Powers Irish whiskey 2) Elmer T. Lee single barrel bourbon from Kentucky 3) Japanese Yamazaki 12-year-old whiskey 4) 12-year-old 2014 limited Islay(Scottish) whiskey — an incredibly volumnious and smoky one This place is in the back of the famous Seven Grand in downtown Los Angeles just before the Seven Grand bathrooms. It used to have no signage at all but now there’s a small sign at the entrance of the always-shut door. While Seven Grand is bursting with noise from a packed crowd of people and a wailing live band, Jackalope is totally enclosed in quiet for a truly intimate whiskey-sipping experience. It seems they only let in a handful of people at a time, and they will not necessarily let you in. There is no password to get in, but you have to speak their«language» if you see a staff member outside the door. So don’t act like a rookie if you want to be admitted. Why? They want serious people who love quality liquor or craft distilleries.

I rarely write reviews on Unilocal, because so many bars are just mehh. I’m never particularly blown away and I feel another 3 star rating would be pointless. Bar Jackalope, on the other hand, is definitely worth reviewing. This is officially my new favorite spot. The décor, the whiskey, the staff are all on point. If you can’t appreciate whiskey, you don’t belong. If you love whiskey, do yourself a favor and turn on that light.

When you think of an «exclusive bar» in back of another bar, I would think they would have the courtesy to at least have good customer service skills. We went to Jackalope on a Thursday night, and I wanted to have a good time with my best friend. I already knew where Jackalope was as I had passed the door, when I was having urinal disagreements when I went to Seven Grand. As I approached the door, an asian lady comes out with a cheap clipboard with a bunch of name hovered onto the paper as if she were just scribbling nuances. She asks for my name, and she asks for my phone number and tells me that the«waiting list» is so long that she won’t be able to let us in. So there we go in Seven Grand about our business. 1 hour passes, no text. 2 hours pass, no text. Next thing you know, I tell my friend let’s just go home. When I go to the bathroom for the last time, I see her letting other people in, but not my friend and i. I confortonted her and said«I was on your list since 10:00 o ocock, and you’re letting other people in before me» — she then has this«concerned» look on her face and tells me she is letting other people since they are a part of the«party» and the room had reached capacity. I swear to God, I peeked my head in — and I swear there was like only 10 people on one cheap ass table! I could not believe the disrespect and the discrimination this lady placed for my friend and I. She had been lying the whole time. I swear I have never seen a bigger stick up someone’s ass before coming to this place. I will never come back hers again! The only way I would come back is if they give me a free drink, but even then I’d still think about it.

You have to respect the chutzpah of an already impressive whiskey bar to put an even more exclusive whiskey bar inside it, but that’s exactly what Seven Grand did with Bar Jackalope. It’s safe to say nobody ever walked into Seven Grand, looked at the menu and said, «Gee, this place really needs more whiskey.» But if the long wait from an understaffed bar or the loud noise from a friendly game of pool are putting you off, and you’d prefer a quieter, more intimate setting, just keep walking… passed the long bar and the pool tables. Before you reach the bathroom you’ll find an unmarked door on the right. Hit the switch and wait for someone to open the door. What you get with Bar Jackalope is exclusivity and a completely different vibe. The place seats maybe 25 inside and another half dozen or so outside and that’s it. The drinks are served 3 ways only — neat, Japanese Highball or as an Old Fashioned. This is all about appreciating what you’re imbibing. The whiskey list is excessive and heavy on Japanese varieties, but more importantly allows for both tasting and full pours. The staff is also friendly, attentive and very knowledgeable, which only makes it feel that much more special. Speaking of special service, they also offer bottles that come with some benefits. While the price is high, starting around $ 250, what you get with it is entry to the bar, no matter how busy it gets, and an invite to about 40 whiskey tasting events. The bottle stays with the bar and can also be held under a company, so if you want to impress clients, this is a great way to do so. If you love whiskey and want to drink it somewhere that’s inviting and relaxing with a touch of class, this is the place to do it.

Went to Jackalope for the first time last weekend and I wish I had known about it much earlier. Relaxed and intimate atmosphere. Excellent staff — knowledgeable and friendly, creates an intimate feel and you can really learn a lot about whiskey. The Bartender(Mitch I think) explained that it’s not exactly a speakeasy, since they don’t specialize in prohibition era cocktails and spirits, but the controlled entrance is definitely a cool touch!

Go. It’s a secret whiskey bar inside a bar with amazing whiskey. Sometimes it’s a little odd. Most of the time, it’s a nice get away and I always feel like I’m at a whiskey bar in Tokyo.

Hands down the best whiskey bar in Los Angeles. I mean, every year of Pappy? Using my best Glendale accent, «C’mon bro!!». If you lust after this kinda stuff, then this place is like the best private whorehouse of whiskey you’ve ever dreamed of. I have no superlatives or thoughts left.

I’m a big fan of Seven Grand and I’m an even bigger fan of speakeasies. I was very excited to 1) try Bar Jackalope and 2) be able to get a table here without being a part of their Whiskey Club. First off, this is a great and intimate spot. You definitely feel in the mood the enjoy some whiskey and cigars the moment you walk in. On top of the great ambience, you are greeted by a great staff and a warm towel. There’s no pressure to drink here, and you are basically sealed off from all the commotion going on outside in Seven Grand. Great selection of whiskey, especially since they had Kavalan. The Whiskey Club offer they have is a great deal since it gives you an opportunity to make reservations at Bar Jackalope. The staff is very friendly and even took the time to sit down for several minutes to talk to us about the bar and the club itself.

We’re not the bar going types yet sometimes a step out of those confines is worthwhile. We’ve enjoyed various whiskies and Scotches over the years to realize there are many to enjoy that elude us. A friend had told us this is a happening place in LA and if we have the chance… that opportunity arrived. Through Linh, she was kind to extend an invitation to a Balvenie and Glenfiddich tasting event held in the Jackalope section. The tasting was fabulous and following we we able to sit back and enjoy some additional fine beverages on hand. The drink menu selection is extensive and to try and choose where to start is a task in itself. Linh and Pedro were very hospitable and this was a nice moment for Linh to share her experiences with Scotch with us. Based on some of our vague preferences she was spot on with her suggestions for our likes and this showed her ability of the distilled craft. All in all a memorable relaxing evening that has opened our eyes to enjoying spirits in such a nice setting. Thanks Linh and Pedro. :)

Cool décor and knowledgeable bartenders. The drunk patron who knocked my drink over was kind of a buzzkill, hence the rating. No, not Bar Jackalope’s fault aside from the close quarters and dim lighting, but the incident wasn’t acknowledged at all by the staff. No apology, just dropped a couple of absorbent cocktail napkins and left. I’d return, but will hold onto my drink next time.

I visited Bar Jackalope on accident, on a visit to Seven Grand. Stephanie, a server at Bar Jackalope, showed us in. It felt extremely exclusive and the ambiance was fantastic. I was a little torn on whether on not I should write this review, because I want to keep this place all to myself! But, great businesses deserve the spotlight. Ambiance is definitely 5⁄5 stars. If I could give more stars, I would. I’ve been looking for a place like this since moving to LA. Just a place to kick back, relax, and enjoy a nice drink and good conversation. Bar Jackalope is modeled like a speakeasy. When Stephanie brought us in, she pressed a button by a random door that had no handle, and a red light came on. Almost immediately, someone else let us in. We were told that’s how to come back in if we wanted. There was inside seating and a small seating on the balcony for smoking. Beautiful interior decoration all around. The lack of crowds and exclusiveness is definitely a huge plus. Definitely an upscale venue. If you want the noise, you could always step out into the next room, Seven Grand, to listen to the live band. Service is also five stars. The bartender, Mitchell, was very knowledgable on the extensive scotch and whiskey menu. He offered great suggestions and picked out great selections for each of our individual tastes. We knew nothing about cigars, and shamelessly asked his opinion. He once again, made great selections. They constantly came over to check on us, but without being intrusive, and kept our water glasses full. The price is on the higher side, but for the experience, I was wiling to pay. There is a ridiculously large selection of whiskey. If you’re unsure, don’t be shy to ask for a recommendation. Most selections come in two sizes. A flight glass and a full pour. Flight glasses(about one ounce — one shot) are much cheaper, and meant for you to sample before buying a full one. A full pour has about two to two and a half ounces. I usually get mine neat, but if you like it on the rocks, they serve them, properly, in large stones. This is probably now my favorite bar, and I’ll definitely becoming back.

WHAAAAAT!!! You mean there’s another awesome bar hidden inside of Seven Grand? I was soo mindblown and excited when I found out there’s a Japanese whisky bar. It’s like a foodgasm on another foodgasm. It’s hidden in the back hallway, with a sign next to the doorbell. Ring and you shall enter into Bar Jackalope, a refined whisky bar with carefully selected fine whiskies. If you are lucky, you may find some rare, «whisky superstar» sightings including Mr. Pappy Van Winkle himself! The bartender is one of the most knowledgeable whisky connoisseur I’ve seen. Throw any questions or fast balls at him and he’ll answer right away. He’ll tell you about the process of making whisky to where to find rare bottles, to the slight differences in taste profiles between years of the same label. I think the best thing of this bar that separates itself from others is the bartender himself. The bartender’s guidance and expertise we received was stellar. We were able to navigate through the whisky menu and try some amazing stuff. The set up is relatively small and seats a couple dozen of people. Think dark, intimate, and makes you feel like you wanna light up a cigar there.
