i came here trying to use a certificate and was met with the most sour customer service. i think it was my bad on not calling ahead because there are probly multitudes of businesses who have cut their ties with . that being said, the old man working the counter was so rude. i’m just trying to understand what i need to do to get the certificate approved and every question is met by a barking non-answer. further inquiry results in him starting making up lies and faking not to speak english. lol? i mean if u dont want to honor it, just say we don’t honor it anymore. i’m out the door. he keeps saying things like wait til the owner comes in. this is his number(fake number). i’m like waiting and calling to dead ends and i just dont get why he dangles this glimmer of opportunity in front of me like some cruel game, wasting both of our time. i suspect it might be because they still have a legal binding to . which again i don’t even care about, just be efficient about it, ya know? and its too bad because the food smelled amay may. well, swadesh and biryani house just a hop skip away. less sour grapes on the next vineyard

I usually buy meat and rice. Yeah chicken as well. I think they have it organic. Chicken itself of a tiny size which is, I believe, organic(not injected with aything). And it’s halal. Bought mortadella which didn’t disappoint.

I know these guys since they came to the States and later on setup the shop. I shopped there once in a while for Bengali fish and other favorites whenever I visited Los Angeles from Northern Cal. I was always troubled by their service but excused it considering as fellow Bangladeshi. But this time around, it’s owner had crossed the line. I placed an order for some fishes two days in advance to him personally and he assured me that he will cut & pack them up for me to pick up two days later. Accordingly, I went to his store after two days to pay and pickup my order. The owner was away from the store and no one else knew about my order. His employee at the service desk asked me to wait so that he could get my order ready! .I was very upset with the owner to the fact that he did not make my order ready and above all he did not apologized for his service. I promised that I will never set foot to this store again and I will warn everyone about their bad service. He does not deserve any star at all!

I am often an idiot. The first time I came here I was about to order the chicken biryani but thought to myself, «that’s not very interesting. Go for something more exotic.» So right after I ordered it I changed my mind and asked the cashier to get me something different. Then I changed my mind and went back to the biryani.(Which he agreeably did.) GOODCHOICE. sure, it’s not a curry, but the spicing is aggressive and plentiful, redolent of cinnamon and ginger and a hint of chili. The chicken itself is tender to that degree that only south Asian restaurants can seem to pull off. Oh, and they’ll throw a small serving of veggie stir fry on top for no extra charge. added bonus: it’s cheap – $ 5 – and you’ll eat it for the rest of the day. Easily two meals worth. Next time I’ll get one of those curries. But for now, that biryani is so satisfying, I’m reluctant to change.

Halal meat that looks fresh at a reasonable price! Also, we ordered chicken biryani and it was filled to the brim for 5 bucks. It was more than enough for us two.

Got into this place in late August and instantly realized compared to outside LA, it’s heat oven. I started sweating instantly even though earlier I walked for 10 minutes in scorching heat and nothing happened. When I was done with shopping, the cashier told the card swiping machine isn’t working and I need to pay in cash. Thankfully I had enough cash. The place where they kept the sweets seemed pretty dirty. And refrigerator for the imported fish also seemed dirty. Despite all these, this place has lots of imported Bangladeshi stuffs. It would be a great place if the people there invest bit more money and energy.

This store is very clean unlike many other Bengali restaurants I have gone to. The tehari was excellent. Very tasty! The paratha was also good. However the goat biryani had a smell of goat meat. The prices are very low.

Gr8 food at reasonable price! The chicken tandoori is the best. I like the small local restaurant especially run with their owners.

I support small businesses as much as the next guy but this place is definitely not for the faint hearted. I LOVE Indian food. Expecting Bangladeshi food to be similar, I ordered the chicken Korma, some paratha, and a chicken patis. Chicken korma was VERY bland forming an inch thick oil circle inside the container; I took a bite of the chicken patis and couldn’t bring myself to take another bite(oily, stale, fried mess). The food was too oily in general. They seem to have a good assortment of spices around 2 bucks a bottle. Currently, the have a grade of «C» from the health department, in case you are someone who cares about stuff like that. I intend to try other Bangladeshi/Indian spots in K-town but I won’t be coming back here.

This place is food here is really good. I come hear especially for the mughlai. Order it fresh at least twenty minutes before you arrive it take a while to make. The aloo chob is also the bomb. WARNING! The service here can be extremely slow, so don’t come if your in a hurry. Be patient with the staff and patrons they don’t have the best of manners, but it’s with the wait for the food, once your served. BTW I recommend the patis(chicken or beef) try to get them when they are fresh made. The shingara(cone shaped) and chicken biriyani.

Food was almost cool to the touch, extremely dry and I could tell that it had been sitting out *uncovered* for at least 5 hours. Service, believe it or not, was even worse than the food. The guy at the register(presumably the owner) acted like he was doing ME a favor by taking my money for his shitty food. Never. Again. Lots of MUCH better options within walking distance or a short drive away from this place: Swadesh Biriyani Kabab House Aladin ^^^ All of these places run circles around the shithole that is Bangla Bazar.

Was bored a few nights ago and decided to google«adventurous eating in los angeles», stumbled upon a Midtown Lunch article on «The 5 Most Underrated Lunches in Los Angeles». Bangla Bazar was one of the first places mentioned and since it’s located just a few minutes away from me I decided on popping in today to see what they’re all about. Thought I had found my all time favorite Biryani joint ‘Biriyani Kabob House’ but this place also sits high on that list. They may have actually topped my fave. Incredibly bold flavors of mixed spices, melt in your mouth chicken, the bone itself disintegrates in your mouth! Such generous portions too all for just $ 5! Tried a few snacks as well: The Bengali version of Samosa called Shingara, filled with potatoes, peas and spice. By far the BEST Chicken Patis of all time, flaky golden puff pastry filled with curried chicken, bold in flavor, kinda tasted like garam masala seasoning, served hot. Will be returning to try their Paratha and Curries. So far, so good! :D

Okay, I visited again and want to come back for more. This time I tried the fish. It was a large piece of fish, lightly fried, and came with some stir fried onion and bell pepper. Pretty tasty, although I prefer\ the spicy chicken dish(jhalpiaji) I got on my previous visit. I got another shingara, which was overall good. However, the bag was turning translucent from oil and I got something crunchy but didn’t think it should have any crunch. Maybe I’m wrong. At any rate, I wasn’t expecting it and didn’t particularly care for the crunch. The kakrol dish tasted much more bitter this time than last. But the best was the freshly made roti. It’s not out in front, but I saw a man getting some, so I asked the gentleman serving me if they had bread. He asked if I wanted fresh and said it would take about 5 minutes, so of course I said«yes.» It was really good– warm, delicious, slightly chewy. I don’t know where the accusations of poor customer service come from. The older man who doesn’t speak English well(working the cash register this time) is nice. It’s not his fault we don’t understand each other well. This time there was a younger guy serving me and he was quite helpful. Plus, a man in line helped me out by translating when I was trying to tell the older cashier what I had ordered. I foresee many more lunch trips to Bangla, even though it’s about three miles from my office!

Its a restaurant/grocery like few others in the area. So if you are looking for a fancy restaurant environment this is not it. But quality and taste wise its a great place.

Decent selection of groceries but poor customer service. Won’t be in a hurry to return. What«Swadesh» lacks in presentation more than makes up in customer service and being friendly and helpful!

I think it’s 3 stars but given that 1) it’s in my ‘hood and 2) it’s the bf’s new favorite place, I’ll round up to 4. The warm samosas are delicious and a bargain at $ 1/each. I wish I knew the names of everything else we got. There was a fair amount of pointing and nodding. The chicken(both the curry and tandoori?) were so tender and flavorful. If I ever need spices, I will go there and get gigantic bags of inexpensive spices. Be warned — it is a bit claustrophobic, not super clean, and service is nonexistent.

I live just 2 mins from here so tis surprising that it just occurred to me to review this! Usually go in to get various grocery items including Chapati(from Montréal), pita bread(which usually sells out so go early!) and most of my spices(huge bags of turmeric, cloves, fennel, curry powder-all from India). Also love finding little surprises — eg. Ayam brand coconut milk from Malaysia, south indian sweet+savoury snacks from India etc. Extra star is for the delicious goat briyani which is my go-to on the times when I need a after dinner snack(since the place opens until 11pm at least!) or when I want to have it as my dinner! AND each serving is more than enough for 2 pax and only costs $ 5(incl tax!)!! Walked in at 10pm on Tues and was offered a free meal since it was Eid Al Adha! Had huge servings of briyani cooked in lentil with cuts from a whole goat braised in spices! Owner even brought us the 2nd serving to our table! Koreatown rawwkss!

I’m a Bangladeshi living here in LA(SLake) for long and I just took my Japanese American and a foodie friend from Silver Lake and had an authentic Bengali lunch for $ 12 a person. We had Shrimp Biryani, Fried Carp, Goat Curry, Beef cooked with Lentil and Kebabs(Tikka Kebab) Stuffed Paratha and the Mint and Cilantro Raita. We got stuffed and took the left overs. When is Jonathan Gold coming here! S.I.M. aka spicycurry!
