This place is good, oh so good. Order everything and do it often. And take home a pot pie and a regular pie while you’re at it. Quiche is near perfect. Pot pie heats so well at home. Chili is pretty good, none too heavy. I could go on and on, but you can’t really go wrong.

Really good home style breakfast, Tried out the chicken fried steak! Super Delicious, I would definitely order it again. They make a lot of homemade desserts and they have good coffee big plus! Service was also great

Breakfast food elevated. Every time I’ve gone there’s been a least a 20 min wait so be prepared. I have never regretted going, if that’s any consolation. We got the banana walnut pancakes and the soyrizo and egg scramble. Both were delicious and I particular liked the soyrizo which had a nice kick to it. The pancakes were fluffy and light, not heavy and overbearing. It came topped with some fresh cream, bananas and walnut which were all splendid. They are known for their pies which are always a hit when me and the mrs bring them to parties. If anything the pies are great to pick up and roll with to a gathering. Call ahead of time to reserve the pie.

BESTJAMSEVER! WOWZERS! If you haven’t been here, come over now! I love J’s BnB to the max. It was my first time and my whole experience was superb. The moment we walked in, we were greeted and seated right away. It looks small from the outside but it keeps going to the back end, actually. I love the entire setting. It smells like fresh coffee and sweets and breakfast-y all at the same time! Everyone has a smile on their faces, even the guests so you know they’re having the meal of their lives! They have breakfast, brunch, lunch an em dinner. I have yet to experience dinner for myself. You have to get the CHICKENFRIEDSTEAK&&MEXICANOMELETTE! Our server was very kind and she was very helpful explaining the menus. I can’t wait to go back and try something new!

The banana cream pie was okay. I have a low tolerance for American sugar levels but this was almost too mild. There were moments I didn’t think there was any added sugar in it or that maybe my friend made a special request for no sugar. While I prefer sweets on the mild side, this was so little that it tasted almost watered down. The whipped cream didn’t compensate for it either. I did enjoy the consistency of the cream, although the bananas could’ve been slightly more ripe. It’s a good choice if you want to enjoy a dessert without the sugar high.

Hmmmm meh. Comfort food, yeah. American, yeah. But this place didn’t really win with me. Prices are cheap and all in all we didn’t have anything bad… But there was nothing special either in the food. I would probably eat here again. But I would not really go out of my way to.

So today a friend invited us to this place. I’ve never been here but I’ve always drove past it. Very cute place! A lot of white and gold to it. Our food was delicious! I really wanted to give it 5 stars but our server changed that. *sad face* she took about 10 minutes to come to our table to take our drink order. Then another 8 minutes to take our food order. After our food arrived she did not ask us once how we were doing. Everything we needed was brought to us by the bus boy. Another serve came by to tell us that our server Tesse was off. He was so much nicer and asked us if we needed anything else. When we put our debit card to get charged our old serve comes back just to take the money. We felt like giving the tip directly to the bus boy that helped us. Hoping to come back for the food but not get seated in her section.

I forgot what first brought me here but it’s certainly not a short drive here. I guess unluckily for them, it’s not closer otherwise I would be here weekly. The menu itself is much like an upbeat diner menu. There’s burgers, sandwiches, etc etc but for me personally I’m always about the breakfast menu. Breakfast in the morning, breakfast in the evening, sign me up. Arrived here at 9AM on a Friday. There’s parking on the street but it’s a little tight so everyday except for Sunday you can park across the street in the local church parking lot. Table for one. The crowd was a hodge podge of people, many senior citizens, many college students, and everyone in between all looking for good food. A short wait and we were seated. Looking around, the environment is very bright. Everything is white and everything looks very clean. The arrangement is a little weird, there is a counter that has some seats. And along the way there are table here and there. There’s also a back room. I ordered the Turkey Sausage/spinach omelette alongside seasoned hash browns. You also get a choice of toast or muffin and you will certainly thank me when you decide on the muffin. They do run out of muffins so get there early. They are freshly baked and will arrive at your table steaming hot. As far as my hash browns, as they should always be, arrived very hot and very crispy. You can get the regular hash browns but the seasoned ones have little peppers along side. As far as the omelette, delicious. The eggs were very fluffy and the cheese perfectly melted. Cutting the omelette open reveals a nice mix of spinach and turkey sausage. Oh yes, it’s also a very large portion. The food all delicious and made to order each and every time. I’m also a coffee drinker and I would say the only let down here. It’s has decent flavor but it’s light coffee and not strong enough for me. I think perhaps they want to go easy on the coffee in case some people complain but who doesn’t like a strong cup of joe. When I stare down into my cup of coffee, I don’t want to see the bottom of the cup. I want to look down into that mug and see a vast possibility of flavor. Ok, now for the reason I actually came. The fact that there’s delicious breakfast is just a major bonus. My sister was feeling under the weather and they have a banana cake here that would raise her spirits. In fact, there are so many various muffins, cakes, and pies that are very decadent and I have tried a few so far and they have all delivered. I tried the cake many months ago and I can say that it’s best I’ve ever had, so far. I hope to find banana cakes in the future that will rival this one. Once my breakfast was paid for, I went to get the cake and to my dismay was told they did not make it that day. Everyday but this day, no cake. One of the employees that was helping me said he was going to get the cake but he brought me banana cream pie. I understand they both have the word«Banana» in them but pie is not cake. One star off for that, I checked in days prior and they said they have the banana cake everyday so I didn’t think I needed to call this day. I ended up getting her carrot cake but I know it won’t do as well. Maybe next time.

I can’t quite put my finger on what exactly it is that makes this place so special. Because in all honesty, the menu is simple and straight-forward and doesn’t feature anything you’ve never seen before. Sandwiches, salads, soups, pastries… I guess… what I’m trying to say is… They really know how to cook here. Everything I’ve tried has blown me away, whether it’s a turkey sandwich or the cup of vegetable beef soup that comes with it. The ingredients are incredibly fresh and high quality. Cooks here understand taste pairings very well. My turkey sandwich on sourdough was moist yet crispy and came with grilled green chiles that wrapped up the flavor so beautifully. Soups are savory and decadent(yes, even the broth) with tender bits of beef. I’ve heard the line can be super long on weekends for breakfast(which I haven’t tried yet)! Luckily I’ve come during lunch breaks and been seated right away. Best of all, food is not expensive here at all. Great bang for your buck and home-cooked, straight from the kitchen, delicious food.

Been coming here for years and I’m finally getting around to writing a review… Sad I know. Anyway, I love everything about this place… Well not so much for the wait but everything else is good with me. There’s regular seating available but they also offer bar seating that is first come first served, so if you dont want to wait and you see a seat open, sit on down quick. Anyway this lovely restaurant offers a variety of options. I’ve mostly only been here for breakfast so this review is going to focus on just that. HOMEMADECHICKENPOTPIES– omg yummy yummy! But it is quite heavy, so expect to be in a food coma afterwards. 4stars **** My go to breakfast is part of the specials menu. PROTEINOMELETTE– consists of egg white omelette filled with chicken breast, bell peppers, onions, all topped with some jack cheese. This option comes with choice of hash brows or seasoned hash browns. Go with the SEASONEDHASHBROWS. It comes with bell peppers and onions cooked in with the potato, yum! You also have a choice of bread or muffin. Bread a s muffin depends on what they have that day. LEMONGLAZE is amazing, and I highly recommend that one. Another thing I recommend is their home made salsa. Yum yum yummy! Chunky salsa with the right kick to add to your omelette. 5 stars*** They have great pies and cakes, along with other pastries like lemon bars, cinnamon rolls, and coffee cakes. Depending on the season and the date they have different pies available. Check the menu when you get there or the board on the wall to see what they have available. Service is a hit and miss. I’ve had great waiters and waitresses, and one that weren’t so much lol. Still a good establishment and I’ll be back.

Location: Bake and Broil is located on Atlantic, across the street from a church. It’s also near the Pollys Pies location on Atlantic if you know where that is. I believe that any day except Sunday, you are allowed to park in the church parking lot too which is awesome. There is a sign indicating where the restaurant is. Also helps its on a corner. It’s not a huge place so be on the lookout! Service: Bake and Broil was introduced to me when I moved to Long Beach and quickly became one of my go to comfort food spots. The one down side here is that almost no matter what time of the day you go, there will be a wait. It is not a huge restaurant, but they try their best to get food out fast and get people in and out the door as quickly as possible. It’s not a great place for large parties, but the room in the back does have some larger tables which can accommodate 5 – 6 adults. I’m always impressed with how fast the food comes out, no matter what you order. Many of the tables in the front are basically counter tables which means waiters/waitresses are constantly walking by checking on you. Everyone has been super polite no matter if we walk in for lunch or 10 minutes before closing(yeah we’ve done that). Food: Bake and Broil is the best version of what its meant to be. A local comfort food spot with great specials and an even better baked goods list. There is always a daily specials board at the front with rotating dishes(although some appear to be mainstays). They also always have about 3 – 4 different homemade soups a day. I have never had a bad soup here. My favorites so far though have to be the veggie beef and the split pea. My go to order on many occasions is the soup and salad special which you cannot beat — it’s $ 6.99 for a bowl of soup, good size bowl of salad, and a muffin or cornbread. WIN. If you like orange, the orange muffin is AWESOME. It’s hit and miss if they still have it at lunch or dinner, but when they do, get it! We’ve tried several other dishes here with no complaints from us or anyone we’ve gone with. I do have to add that their baked goods are ONPOINT. There is always a great variety of cakes and pies to chose from and they will sell slices of day old cake/pie at a slight discount too! Some of the specials they have include a dessert — for example, you can get a half sandwich, bowl of soup, drink and a slice of pie for about $ 10. Crazy good deal. The red velvet cake is fantastic — not too heavy like some other ones I’ve had. I know people talk a lot about breakfast, but actually we’ve really only gone for lunch and dinner thus far. It’s so crazy crowded on the weekends we actually haven’t attempted it yet. You can get breakfast items all day so we’ve tried some things though. Overall: Again, Bake and Broil is exactly what I think its meant to be and just doing its thing. It’s super popular on the weekends, so make sure you have a good amount of time if thats when you go. Service is friendly and fast so they move people pretty quick though. Parking at the church is good any day except Sunday. Try the specials that come with a dessert — cakes and pies are great! Good value for good comfort food.

My new favorite spot in the area! Here are my reasons: 1. I live literally a block away and can walk to this restaurant. 2. When there’s a wait(and there’s always a wait because of my following reasons. Keep reading), I can walk home, put laundry in, do the dishes, vacuum and walk back to the restaurant to be seated. 3. The waiters, hostess, cashiers, EVERYONEHERE, is sooooooo very sweet and responsive. When you walk into the restaurant you are automatically greeted by atleast one person and I’ve been here enough times this past weekend to notice that. No one who enters here goes unwelcomed at all, which is rare at any restaurant. 4. They’re a restaurant AND bakery. Enough said. 5. Their food is ABSOLUTELYAMAZING. From the coffee, to the soups, to their breakfast plates, to their breads, to especially their desserts like their pies, red velvet cupcakes and their famous cinnamon rolls. 6. As a continuation to number five above, their menu is unbelievably reasonable! We used to pay $ 20 plus for one meal during brunch, not including drinks or desserts. Here, a breakfast platter with hash browns, sausage, biscuits, gravy and eggs along with a large bowl of clam chowder and corn bread with coffee, a mocha and gigantic cinnamon roll was all $ 20 plus tip! Incredible. 7. Again, I can walk here and plan on doing so basically every other day or two because of such great service, welcoming staff and the nice, homey feeling I get walking into the restaurant, which is sought after and very hard to achieve by any restaurant. I love that this place isn’t a chain and it’s a local’s hangout for a great meal. Five stars for all of the above :-)!

Been 58 mins and still waiting to be seated. What the heck? Got here before 11am to avoid breakfast rush and get in early for lunch. It’s only 3 of us. Not coming back to wait this long for food. By the way, food was delicious. Can’t deny that but wait times will still keep me away.

Food gets 3 – 4 stars, the baked goods get 5 stars! Man o man. their baked goods are soo good! Came here this afternoon around 12:15pm and there was already about 7 – 8 ppl on the waitlist. Good thing we were a party of 2, so we didn’t have to wait long at all. We were seated in a comfy little booth where someone immediately took our drink order and a few minutes later our food order. I ordered the tomato, basil, onion and jack cheese omelette with seasoned hash browns and an English muffin. The boo ordered the soyrizo and eggs with plain hash browns and a bran raisin muffin. We also had two little containers of homemade jam on the table, one was strawberry and the other was apricot I believe. I think this was my favorite brunch experience because the food was tasty and the bill was less than $ 20! I will be coming back here. And when I do, I’m gonna order a pie to go. :P

This was a great find in Bixby Knolls. I love the interior. It’s like walking into a big whit kitchen. All types of pies run along the central part of the restaurant. Quality home cooking. I had the chicken fried steak the breakfast version with wheat toast, eggs over easy, and potatoes. One of the best chicken fried streaks I’ve had since living in the south. Everything was made with quality ingredients. Although it was busy, my food was prepared quickly. The jams are handmade. A must try

The cake. Oh the cake. I could finish my review there. But I won’t! I also enjoy the clam chowder on Fridays and their salads look delicious. Have only dined in a couple of times but get take out regularly. A couple of times they’ve left out items but have remedied the situations satisfactorily. Could use slightly lower prices — that’s the only reason it’s not as good as it gets here. Back to the cake. The red velvet… the chocolate ones… the cupcakes!!! And the pumpkin bar I recently had… even better than their famous pies… Love them for special occasions. Would like to come back and dine at the bar sometime. This place is hopping!

Within the last year or so, I have been frequenting around Long Beach for some of the best places to grub. I managed to come across this little family owned joint. Actually, I had had it bookmarked for quite some time and I figured that it was the right time to venture in and try for myself. Jongewaard’s Bake and Broil is located right in the Bixby Knolls area nearby Signal Hill in North Long Beach. First of all, let me say that there is no specific parking here. Street parking is all there is. I had their Cajun chicken sandwich. Tasted just like it said! Not too spicy but made just right. My foodie date had the lemon pepper chicken plate. Again, well presented and amazing to the taste. For dessert, we both split a chocolate cake slice. A slice that I may say was a bit on the dry side, and big as well, but nonetheless enjoyable. The service here was exquisite. Our waiter was beyond pleasant and punctual. The wait time for the food to arrive was around 6 minutes. There is plenty of seating and a back area that also seats patrons. From the inside, it looks small, but with a very home-y feel. For me, this review was nonetheless a great one due to the amazing service and experience I had here. I would definitely recommend this place to everyone I know plus others as well. All around professional with such amazing food. Oh yeah, this would make my 300th review THISYEAR! Now that’s quite the accomplishment! Had to save it for such a great place that I will be back to try again!

Can’t go wrong with Pancakes and Pie’s two of my most favorite things to eat and when I am able to eat sugar and carbs you bet your fanny I will eat at places where I know I will get nothing but the goods. The pancakes were made perfectly as if the batter was made by the pancake Gods but my goodness do they come out perfectly good, fluffy, and we’ll just so darn delicious. My eggs, well also cooked just the way I like them and the bacon thick and crispy but not to the point where it is burned just a good delicious home cooked breakfast. And but of course not to pass up on dessert but because I was so full a pie to go was a definite must. And boy was that pumpkin pie perfect. The pumpkin was smooth, creamy, and not to overly sweet and was I glad I was not sharing this baby because it was so good that one slice was not enough. Aside from the food I ate the service was amazing. The waitress very attentive and my cup of coffee was never empty. She even managed to keep my nephew amused throughout out breakfast. The restaurant so quaint and cozy that it felt as if I was having a meal at my grandmas. It was early when we got there but it was already very busy but since I opted to sit at the counter which I prefer anyways, well we did not wait at all.

Overview: Jongewaard’s Bake n Broil is a painfully popular casual diner at the edge of Bixby Knolls here in Long Beach that has an exceptional selection of traditional American entrees and pies with great portion sizes. The Food: My liver/onions dinner course was in reality a small feast and consisted of a 4 course meal starting with bread, half-soup/half-salad, liver and onions entrée, and a sorbet. Every piece of it was prepared very well and although nothing was«artisan grade» or particularly unique, each individual piece was very well made. Nice tangy salad, non-overdone liver, nice light sorbet… I was consistently impressed. The Service: We had an older lady who was so pleasant, so helpful in helping us find something great on the menu, and very attentive. The Establishment: This is where the downside lies. Jongewaard’s has been undergoing renovations in 2015 and as a result, things in the back room are pretty ugly right now. Also, the heating/cooling situation is pretty mediocre as well. I didn’t take away stars because I’ll bet it’ll be back up and better than ever once construction is complete but for now I would advise against bringing a first date here. The Location: Parking is decent here because the church across the street lets Jongewaard’s use their lot when it’s not Sunday but don’t think for a second that there’s always going to be a spot. Also, being on the edge of Bixby means going anywhere cool is just a 2 minute walk away. Conclusions: This Jongewaard’s combines great food, great portions, great service, and great location into one incredibly crowded diner. Expect to wait 30 – 45 minutes during meal times but at least there’s a nice bench for people waiting to be seated.

I only get to come here once a year, for work, so I eat here as many times as I can! Luckily my coworkers are game, willing to come back for multiple meals. We time it so that we come at the non-peak times. I have seen the huge crowd waiting to eat before, and it inspires you to try another time instead. I like the place, but am not willing to wait an hour to be seated. They are definitely known for their pies, chicken pot pies, quiches, and cakes & other bakery items. Eat the pot pie. Do it. Even take a frozen one(or 2) home. I’m just sayin. 2 dinners and 1 breakfast this time: Pot Roast, salad & clam chowder, Peach Raspberry Pie with icing a la Mode. Chicken Fried Chicken, French Onion Soup, Cherry Pie a la Mode. Chicken Pot Pie, salad, Pineapple Coconut cake. Baked Mac N Cheese with Ham, French Onion soup(obviously my coworker has a specific soup she likes), Coconut Cream Pie. Bacon, Cheddar, Avo omelette with hashbrowns, French Breakfast Puff. The French Breakfast Puff was cool, a muffin with a cornbready texture, and cinnamon sugar on top. Peach Raspberry pie with Icing is my current favorite there, because I’ve never seen that combo anywhere else. The Coconut Pineapple cake had a layer of pineapple in between, but needed a little more coconut frosting(only time you’re going to hear me say THAT!). Everything was really good. Definitely had some leftovers to take, luckily we had a mini fridge & a cooler. Even took a frozen Pot Pie home for the Boss.

I absolutely love this place! Having gone to CSULB and lived in Long Beach, if anyone asks for restaurant recommendations, I’m quick to point them to Bake n Broil! If you’re looking for delicious cooking and food that feels like you’re eating at grandma’s, this is the place to be. The wait can be crazy, so make sure you factor that into your visit. As far as seating, the restaurant has booths and a counter in the front half, then you encounter the kitchen in the middle, and there are more booths and tables in the back. It’s definitely a bustling place. When I think of Bake n Broil, I immediately think of their muffins! They are some of the best I’ve ever tasted, so delicately crunchy on top and moist inside. They’re served warm with a little scoop of butter, and the muffin tops generously overshadow the muffin base. Usually the muffins are served prior to your entrée, so basically you get a huge chunk of muffin goodness to whet your appetite! I always order blueberry and have not been disappointed yet! They also have other pastry options, including pies, and you can buy some to take home. Their scrambled eggs are consistently well-cooked, not browned or dry at all. The seasoned hash browns have diced peppers and both sides of the hash are sufficiently crispy. Their coffee is decent, so all in all, you get a satisfying and well-rounded breakfast. They also serve several comfort food dinner options, and their complimentary ice cream is delicious! As I write this review, reminiscing of their muffins brings mouthwatering memories flooding back. Join the club!
