Herb Phillipson’s is a versatile and eclectic sporting goods store. Along with sporting goods, they cover quite a few categories of merchandise. Herb’s also carries clothing targeted to the outdoor worker, sneakers, shoes, boots, hunting, fishing, camping, and kayaking equipment, all sorts of sports clothing, and you get the idea… What first drove my decision to visit this store was reviewing their weekly circular. They featured certain low priced, name brand casual clothing. So, how could I go wrong? When I entered, I could immediately see that this place was stuffed to the gills with merchandise. It was generally neat and clean, although, there are many narrow aisles. The sales staff was unobtrusive, except for a simple greeting when entering. I easily found the advertised merchandise but, I was disappointed to observe that the labels were deliberately sliced, which normally indicates second run or overstock merchandise. If this were openly advertised, I would not have any issue. I perused their shoes, sneakers and outdoor clothing and, in my opinion, prices are generally higher here than online or at at other brick and mortar stores. Selection is not as vast as Gander Mountain or Bass Pro Shops. The location, however, may be more convenient for some. If you want to support your favorite college sports team, you can buy clothing from any college you wish… as long as it is Syracuse University.(I’m not from around here so, I’ll never understand the local, blind, fanatical allegiance.) All in all, a respectable resource if one chooses to shop locally.

Great store for all your camping, fishing, hunting, sports, and clothing needs. Their prices are competitive with great deals now and again, and they carry a robust collection of Syracuse University team paraphernalia. Staff are generally available and pleasant. I’ve checked prices of their goods against Amazon and suchlike, and they are very competitive, or at least on par. It’s nice to have a local business of this caliber in the area… plus, it’s a great store to just wander around in.

Returned the other day to buy my Hunting License. The Manager is very friendly, as are all of the staff there this summer. They still don’t have any lead BP slugs other than T/Cs. No #11 primers but carry a wide variety of very good ammo for center fire rifles. Lack of BP #11 tiny little primers may be considered dangerous in New York State because they make a loud noise if hit with a hammer… for those… go to Gander Mountain in Cicero… they carry Pyrodex also. Herb’s does not. But they have all of the other accessories for BP cap lock shooting!

Contrary to what the other reviewer states, I’ve had no problem returning or exchanging anything. Maybe that review was written by a competitor or a disgruntled former employee? They have a great selection if merchandise ranging from name brands to unknowns at good prices. I don’t live in the area anymore, but when I’m in Syracuse, I always stop by to see what Syracuse gear they have. Most SU t-shirts are only $ 10 instead of $ 20 like most places. See you next time Herb.
