This was a fun place to go to. Great chips and salsa. I had a combination plate of enchiladas, and tacos. It was great.

The food is okay. You could probably get better Mexican good from Moes. And it’s way too expensive. But the servers are lovely!

Family owned, staff is amazing and food is great. My neighbors own it so we had to try it out, but no bias, of course. They have chicken or shrimp egg rolls that are A MUST– filled with corn, avocado, tomato and cheese with a spicy sauce on top that is drool worthy. I always get the quesadilla with never fails and is HUGE. Comes with rice, beans, guac– the works. Cant go here and not get the sangria or guac appetizer. My dad gets the mole poblano, which is basically chicken in chocolate sauce– sounds SO odd but taste SO good. Can get a little loud somtimes but its a mexican restuarant– were all just there to have fun.

South of the border… Great service with food quality parallel to an upscale Taco Bell. I feel bad for people that come here because they’ll pay 20 $ for something they can get for 5 $ at a local drive thru. The only reason I’m writing this review is to commend the quality of service. The waiters work hard and fast. If the restaurant supplied a higher quality of food I would give a better review. And for the record; 5 people, 5 beers, 4 entrees and 1 appetizer came out to $ 145. PIECEOFGARBAGEPLACE; UNBELIEVABLE. GIVEME A GODDAMNBREAKWITHTHISOBNOXIOUSPOPPYCOCK.

Disappointing. Came here for lunch with family members to celebrate a birthday. The food is decent for suburbia. The prices are not. This place is way too expensive. There should be a lunch menu that features an affordable lunch selection. It is no wonder the place is empty at noon. $ 20.00 for the nachos appetizer was just ridiculous. It was barely enough for one person. Another $ 20.00 for the combination plate was another insult. Mexican food is so cheap to produce. These prices are exorbitant. Lunch for five shouldn’t cost $ 140 before tip. Each person had one drink. Two Coronas, one non-premium tequila margarita, two sodas. Management should seriously consider a more affordable lunch option to their one menu. The beverage portion of the hand written bill was a lump sum and not broken down by individual drinks. Math is not their strong suit as the bill total was incorrect. No alcohol drink prices on menu. A return trip is not warranted.

First time we tried coming here they were packed and didn’t honor the reservation we had made. It was our first time going out with our new baby and we were terribly disappointed that they couldn’t seat us anywhere near the time that we had made a reservation. Anyhow, took Mommy out for her birthday and wanted to sample another local Mexican restaurant since that is what she really likes. Writing this real time… Came on a Monday so we have almost the entire place to ourselves. Chips are good. Guacamole is average/above average. The«South of the Border» Margarita is phenomenal. Their«classic» is good. The fajitas were great as was the Camerones Verdes(shrimp in green sauce). On the negative side the service was average at best. The childrens chicken taco was $ 11.95. Overall we were happy with our experience and it is definitely a Mexican restaurant worth trying.

Really really good food same for the drinks they do not skimp you BUT I think it’s a lil pricey for Mexican food… It’s a place I’d go only if it’s an occasion sorry to say that… The fajitas was $ 20 a plate which I thought was too much. But it is a nice spot, nice decorations

We had a great dinner here. The food was great but the staff was even better. The waiter was so nice and accommodating! I felt right at home. And the music is on point. Love it.

On countless occasions, I’ve passed by South of the Border and I’ve yet to go in until last week. Their exterior is unmistakable with its golden yellow color, you can’t miss it on Wantagh Ave. Inside is cozy and festive with the classic Mexican Restaurant décor. I loved the hand painted tiles on the table, what a nice touch. Margaritas are strong here. So after one or two, make sure you have that Über app open and ready to go. But all jokes aside, they’re pretty good. The forgot the salt on the rim(vital part) but that’s okay. I then realized all the salt went onto those chips. The first batch we got were extremely stale and when we received new ones, they were doused in salt. Too much for our liking. Our entrees came and I ordered the chicken fajitas which were very good. Everything was seasoned well and they are happy to substitute my refried beans for black beans. We also split the Quesadillas with chorizo which I think was the better of the two. The chorizo was smoky and a good touch to the meal. I think it should be crumbled up so that its more consistent in the dish. Just a thought. I think South of the Border could improve a bit here or there but the food is good, the place is festive AND if it’s your birthday be prepared that the whole restaurant blasts the Happy Birthday song and you’ll probably have to wear their giant pink sombrero. Too funny.

South of the border has an amazing bar with all types of drinks but I just kept it simple with a beer and plate of vert cheesy nachos with steak. The bartender did an excellent job with customer service as well as attending all the people at the bar. The restaurant as a great scent with all the good smelling food that was passing me by can’t wait till next time to eat dinner here.

In a saturated market of Mexican restaurants this place has given up! The food is never well presented! It’s slapped on the plate with no real care! When the food hit the table it looks, taste and feels like it’s been sat under the heat lamps for far too long. I think margaritas down the road may be the death of this restaurant. I’ll be more than happy to give this place one last time before totally writing it off!

Came here for another great dinner. We did not make reservations, that was a mistake, and had to wait 45 minutes. But that was not the biggest issue that I had with this, he really issue is that there is really no where to wait in the restaurant. The food once again was delicious. I had the black bean soup and shrimp ceviche(everything cooked perfect. We shared a appetizer sampler(I tried the cheese quesadillas which were good, the guac always delicious) My dad ordered chicken enchilada mole(this is my favorite mole sauce) and my mom had a chicken dish with cream sauce, broccoli and mushrooms. They were both really good!

Not sure why this place has 4 stars. Even for none fancy Mexican this place stinks! The service was good but the food was below average. The margarita was anything but; it was so so sweet. Guacamole was blah and my meal was greasy. Will def never go again! Besito and Tesoro are WAYWAY better… can’t even compare.

Came here for a family birthday dinner last night during a snow storm. Luckily we had reservations or we probably would have waited for at least an hour. As it was we waited for about 15 minutes. Yup, this place was packed during a snow storm when most people stay home. Good sign. This place is small though and with a packed bar the only place to wait was the very tiny foyer. There was a total of 8 people and we were packed in like sardines. We were seated as soon as our table was ready and the first thing I noticed was how loud it was. I mean really loud. We had a selection of appetizers which were all good and everyone seemed to enjoy their entrees. Food was maybe a step above other Mexican restaurants of this caliber(Mangoes). The sangria was delicious, highly recommend getting a pitcher or two. Overall I’ll probably be back.

I’ve heard people people talking about this restaurant for years but never sat down and ate here. I’m glad I did, the food was great. There was several things I wanted to try on the menu. I had the combination which was a taco, a burrito and an enchilada. It came with rice and beans. I enjoyed the meal and would definitely come back. They have a good sized parking lot so parking is. It a problem. I went during the week so I didn’t have to wait for a table. The restaurant is pretty small so I’m not sure if you would have to wait on the weekend. One thing I would suggest is they get a dessert menu. The waitress just told us what’s for dessert instead of having a menu. The service was very good and we were always well attended to throughout the meal. This place also had a full bar.

Very fun and vibrant atmosphere with great margaritas. My wife and I came here after years of driving by and decided to give it a try. The place is really cute and nicely decorated. We ordered some margaritas which were awesome! We started with the queso fundito and all I can say is wow. It’s basically baked cheese with jalapenos that you scoop onto flour tortillas. It’s just awesome. We both went with the steak fajitas. This is where the three stars come in to play. They were good but not really that good. I wish the steak had more flavoring. It’s hard to rate these as being really good when I’ve had other steak fajitas in the area that were outstanding. I wouldn’t pass on trying this place but I would prefer going elsewhere for fajitas. The standout parts were easily the atmosphere and drinks. Those alone would make me come back but I would try a different entrée.
