We had a similar experience to Michael H, so perhaps the poor service was not a fluke. We were staying at the Village Inn, so we thought it would be nice to dine here, and immediately made a reservation. At the appointed time, someone from the staff told us to wait in the hotel lobby. There was no further contact from anyone for a half hour, and no one we could talk to – a few waitresses rushed back and forth frantically, obviously in no mood to talk to us. This despite the fact that there seemed to be plenty of empty tables(although apparently not in the area they wanted people to sit). Finally, after a half hour we were led to a table by our waitress, without comment or apology. We asked what happened, and she mumbled something to the effect of unexpected walk-ins. Hmm. Why bother with a reservation if walk-ins get preference? The service from then on was equally inattentive and slow, despite the fact that the restaurant was starting to clear out by then. That aside, the food was very good. The setting, on the porch, was also quite nice. I’d probably rate the restaurant four stars, perhaps more, if the rest of the experience had been better. Our approach next time will be quite simple: we won’t bother with a reservation. We will ask if there is a table available immediately, and if not we’ll head somewhere else. Lenox certainly has many other excellent choices within a several block walk.

Our evening at the restaurant was, well, bizarre. We had dinner reservations for 8:30 but arrived at 8. We could see that the main dining room was essentially empty and there were 5 or 6 tables seated on the porch. After several minutes of seeing no employees whatsoever ever, out popped a breathless lady, who turned out to later to be our waitress, exclaiming that they were much busier than planned and asking if we would take a seat and somebody would get our drink order. No problem, as we sat in the empty room and waited patiently. About 10 minutes later the same lady reappeared and offered to seat us! As we followed her out to the porch, we were taken saw that the doorway was also the staging area for linens and silverware as well as the wait station and the bussing area. I would have rather not walked through all of that on the way to the table. The food was good, not exceptional. It would have been even better had it been what we ordered! We had escargot for the appetizer which was prepared overlooked and not according to the menu. I ordered the rack of lamb, smaller size with 4 ribs, medium. I received the large size, 6 ribs, medium rare. My wife ordered the lobster pie accompanied by asparagus. It actually came with green beans. Whenever the waitress did come by, she took very little time and was obviously rushed. However, by this time, there were only two tables being served. In the end, the meal was just not worth the price, with or without all of the other problems.

Very disappointing. I’m honestly wondering if I went to a different restaurant than all these 5 star reviews. The place is very small and quaint, but not nearly upscale. The portions were extremely tiny and the prices were very high for what you received. The flavors were just average. There was nothing terribly unique or creative on the menu.

No way is this a 5-star or «best dining experience ever» kinda place, unless this is the first time you’ve ever dined out. I should have trusted my instincts when we were the only two diners at 8pm on a beautiful Friday night in early June. Shame on me! Don’t get me wrong, there were positives… The service was good, the wine was fine, the prices were fair, and it was plenty quiet enough to carry on a conversation, but the food was just so-so. Perhaps better suited to the over-65 crowd. If you’re even remotely a foodie, don’t bother. There are too many other outstanding options in this beautiful part of the Berkshires.

Our food experience was mixed. My wife had the sword fish special with pesto and thought it was very good. I had the turkey dinner and thought it was fair at best. The gravy tastes like some poor quality jar gravy that sat in the cupboard too long. My wife’s salad was very good. The chowder was just meh. Our servers were excellent though. Very friendly and attentive. I thought the cost for the meals was a bit high but it is the going rate out here it seems. I could give this a 3.5 stars but I can’t do 4.

Whenever we stay in the Berkshires we always have dinner here. I love the food, it is so fresh and the waitresses are great. I got the petite filet meal, just incredible. The sides are seasonal and i think are grown in their garden. And since i am a bread lover my favorite are the homemade rolls which i always ask more of. I was told that they have a lounge/bar area for entertainment but we only dine in the upstairs enclosed porch area.

We had a nice relaxing dinner at The Village Inn.(Note: The restaurant at The Inn is actually called Rumplestiltzkin’s) It’s an old Inn atmosphere in a charming town. We started with ravioli stuffed with smoked gouda in a sage butter sauce($ 9) and a spring salad($ 7). The ravioli had a nice strong smokey flavor and the sauce was delicious. The spring salad was relatively small, but the greens were very fresh and covered with a nice sharp Gorgonzola, grapes, and walnuts. The vinaigrette was light and tasty. For our main course we had the roast turkey($ 20). It was very good but nothing really special, although the sausage stuffing was quite good. One surprising turnoff was that the cranberry sauce came in a small plastic container like a cheap diner. Not at all fitting to the overall atmosphere. Our other dish was a special, Pork Osso Bucco($ 22). It was slow cooked and the pork fell off the bone. The sauce was flavorful without overpowering the dish. An excellent choice. Portions were not large but right-sized, and service was excellent. You probably won’t be blown away by any of the dishes, but it’s very good food at at fair prices in a nice atmosphere. Worth a visit.

Wow. The folks who say that this was amongst the best dining experiences they ever had must have very different standards than me, because this was absolutely mediocre in every way. No, wait, I take it back — the butternut bisque was actually quite good. But other than that… meh.

A friend and I were looking for a place to eat in Lenox and chose this one based on the menu — there was literally nothing on there we weren’t drooling over and wanting to try. Everything about the experience was outstanding. Two women who attended our table were like instant friends, talking and telling stories(and listening to mine). They were as easy going as you could want — while still being efficient and on top of *everything* to the point that when my friend asked for something, she got it twice. The atmosphere were cozy and relaxed; well lit and not noisy or terribly busy feeling, despite a lot of diners. We ordered delicious cups of soup — my New England chowder was incredibly thick and chunky. After much debate — since we really did want everything on the menu — I ordered the Tournedoes(twin petit filet mignon sautéed with shallots, portabellas and gorgonzola served with shallot mashed potatoes and seasonal vegetables). It was so MINDBOGGLINGLYGOOD that I proclaimed it better than … well, you know. My friend got a scallop dish — and we did share both dishes. I have no idea what the cost was, since I wasn’t paying but that aside, it was one of the nicest dining experiences I’ve ever had. I can’t wait to go back some day!

Rumplestiltzkin’s is the restaurant located at the Village Inn in Lenox, MA. I have to agree with one of other reviewers: This was one of the best dining experiences ever for me as well. Our server was friendly and took the time to talk to us, joke around, and explain the menu. Her husband happens to be the chef there, and she told us that she has been in the restaurant business for a long time. She was certainly very knowledgeable. To start, we had delicious rolls(homemade by our server, who runs the restaurant), and a cup of the butternut bisque, which was fantastic! Our dinners came with a dinner salad, which was fresh. I had the Shaker-Style Cranberry Pot-Roast, which was served with a potato pancake and braised root vegetables, and I ate every bit of food on my plate. It was so good! My wife had the pecan encrusted chicken, which was also delicious. However, she felt that the chicken was a little dry. Nonetheless, this was a worthwhile dining experience! The restaurant is moderately priced, but well worth it because the food is delicious, the service is excellent, and the portions are quite large! We actually hope to stay at the Village Inn in the future.

We went here b/c there have been positive reviews around the internet. The manager was nice enough to stay open for us on a snowy, Sunday night. Food was delicious — I had the pecan encrusted chicken which was tasty but what bothered me was that it was a fried chicken cutlet. Whenever I make this dish or have it in a restaurant it’s usually an entire chicken breast and it’s baked. I scraped off the massive amounts of breading and it was still good. My boyfriend had the shrimp scampi which was topped with lots of artichoke hearts??? He really enjoyed it although it lacked garlic — which was fine by me since I wasn’t eating garlic. :) Anyway, house salad was very good and the waitress was quite accommodating. I really wanted to give 3 stars but the atmosphere was gorgeous, homey, and very comforting on a cold, winter’s night.

This is, hands down, the best dining experience I have ever had. My girlfriend and I went there for dinner and, because it was before the season started, we were one of only three couples in the restaurant. This is a classic restaurant. White linen and wicker chairs variety. But the food, oh my god, just blew me away. It was nearly a year ago, so I don’t remember exactly what we had, but I remember that it was just perfect. The vegetables that came with our entrees were cooked to a perfection that I did not know was possible. The service was great, but then there were very few people to worry about. The menu was mainly italian/french and we had a couple of glasses of some really good Pinot Noir. In short, I would definitely eat there again. And might travel to lenox just for this. I believe the restaurant is called Rumplestiltzkin’s Restaurant.
