My boyfriend and I wanted to get out of Austin for a weekend trip, and found this lovely B&B. It’s so hard to truly put into words how amazing and special this place is. Anita and Ken, the owners, are the sweetest people, very welcoming, and truly do enjoy interacting with people. They make all of their guests feel very welcomed, and are absolutely amazing people. They also have their small welcoming committee, consisting of a cat, 3 sweet dogs, and one parrot. The room we had, #2, had the softest bed(queen size), and I sank into the layers of blankets, getting the best sleep I’ve had in a long time. As well, the bathroom was simply amazing, with a rain shower that allowed for a very relaxing hot shower. After a nice long soak, it was nice to sit outside in the quiet, crisp air, watching the endless stars in the sky. Being on the outskirts of town allows for a breathtaking stargazing experience, if that’s something you enjoy. Ken and Anita are very knowledgeable of the area, and gave great recommendations on nearby places to visit or dine at. I would also highly recommend the local Farmers Market, which was quite large, and full of handmade crafts. We left with our fair share of fresh honey, homemade pastries and a few items to bring home… The B&B is in a wonderful location, with easy access to the main highways, but still situated far enough from the city that you can enjoy the quiet outdoors. There is ample outdoor space, and a nice gazebo area, as well as an outdoor table next to an outdoor fireplace. Adjacent to the fireplace is a nicely sized public kitchen that is available for all guests to use. There is also a beautiful great room, where breakfast is served(DELICIOUS!) each morning, but also available for guest use if you want to relax. We’ll definitely be back again, and I am looking forward to many future visits.

I stay here nearly every time I’m in town. Innkeepers Anita and Ken are wonderful people, and so are their guests. The B&B is located on the north end of town near the NASA road exit of US70 just before the highway reaches the beautiful, tall Oracle range east of town. It’s on a small dirt road, a little easy to miss, but the innkeepers will give you easy directions. It’s remote enough to be safe and quiet, but close enough to be convenient for just about whatever you’re there for. The location certainly makes it great for hikers at the new national monument and other nearby trails. One trail starts very close to the B&B.(Not all the trails are well-mapped yet; there are more being built.) It’s also close to White Sands National Monument(40 minutes). It’s within shouting distance of the NASA gate and several military reservations. They’ll often charge government per diem if you ask ahead, though in that case, breakfast is extra(and worthwhile). The rooms are spacious and comfortable and have the requisite B&B quaintness, warmth, quirkiness and charm. Beds are comfortable, A/C is nearly silent. There are small, serviceable desks in the rooms. WiFi is free. The bathrooms are nice, and at least one is set up well for handicapped access. There’s a small TV, but I couldn’t even tell you if it works. There’s a little crosstalk through the walls between rooms, so if you’re a light sleeper, I’d still recommend those earplugs. I often sleep with the window open, though that means sometimes I’m woken by an owl or whatnot. Not a bad thing in my book! Breakfasts are nicely varied, from simple to elegant, all competently made and beautifully served. Coffee is very good and there’s enough on the table to keep you awake for days. There’s a single wood table inside, solid and sturdy, beautifully made and the perfect size to discuss the previous day’s hike or dinner adventure with your fellow travelers. There’s another table outside in a covered breezeway, and you can sometimes find one or both of the innkeepers there having a soda or a glass of wine. Sit and talk — they’re friendly, personable and fascinating and are genuinely interested in your trip and whatever else you enjoy discussing. It’s about 20 minutes from the city center. You have to drive to dinner, but that’s not a terrible thing — think about how far you’d be driving to dinner if you were in a larger city. Try Si Italian for a romantic, if somewhat pricey meal; Cha Chi’s at the Dona Ana exit on I-25 just north of town; Luna Rossa(more Italian — with gelato). Antonio’s is a nearby funky pizza place run by a Hispanic bunch, with unpredictable — but tasty — results. If you’re in pretty late, try Santorini(competent and reasonably-priced middle eastern). Skip La Posta de la Mesilla unless you’re there with a large group — you can get better Mexican at home, but it’s better than serviceable and they do crowds exceptionally well. DreamCatcher also hosts weddings and such things. There is a large gravel patio and very picturesque arbor on the property. The large common room is available for meetings. Around Christmas you get a wonderfully decorated tree and something like a southwestern-themed crèche scene in your room. There is usually a suet-seed cake in the backyard visible from your back window; both kinds of quail, warblers, doves and other wonderful birds(and some entertaining rabbits) hang out for your enjoyment. There are very few annoying bugs, which can be a problem closer to town. Three friendly, mellow dogs will help you feel at home as well. And, if it needs mentioning, the view of the mountains is spectacular, and the sunsets … If you come at the right time of the year, the desert blooms are phenomenal. Go there.(You might not want to go back home.)
