Good local food, huge portions! The lady at the counter was very nice. I Recommend the BBQ chicken and the beef ribs. The chicken Katsu and Kalua pork is also very good. Not the speediest service, but worth the wait.

We absolutely love this place. We walked over after a long day on the ocean, starving. It was in walking distance from our condo and we were beat. Traffic was at a standstill for at least an hour and we opted to walk and pick something up rather than stay in the car any longer. Service was immediately friendly– smiles, conversation and sincerity by a lady working the counter and tables. There were two other tables enjoying their meals when we walked in to place an order to go. We ordered some Chinese dishes to go, so I cannot speak for the Hawaiian mixed plates. Regardless, our food was very, very good– especially considering that we ate at the four seasons earlier in the day for okay food at insane prices. We got the general’s chicken(so flavorful!!), seafood chowmein(loaded with flavorful shrimp, ono fish and veggies(broccoli, cabbage, onions etc).– amazing!, and some veggie egg rolls. Portions are huge– we will be eating them for at least another day and a half. We like to utilize condos so we can cook our own food most of the time and try to only dine out once a day. For $ 32, and all that food, this place was a hit and we will definately be back, and I hope others will give it a shot as well!

Food is so tasty, great diversity of options! I am not a huge fan of Chinese food, but this place was one of the best I’ve had. I had the bbq chicken and garlic shrimp and my fiancé had the pork and fried chicken. Reviews before wrote negative comments about the service, don’t let that scare you away! It’s a small place, staff is so friendly, and there was only one person working who was serving and managing take out orders and so obviously she’s doing the best she can. Easy to walk in and get a yummy bite to eat quickly!

Tasty authentic mix plate specials with no frills. You definitely want to carry out rather than eat in. You can’t go wrong with any of the kahlua pork offerings. Enough food for two meals and then some. Several reviews have criticized the person who takes the orders as being rude. This has not been my experience. I think cultural and/or language barriers make him seem abrupt without intending to be. Hey, you are in Hawaii. Just mellow out, accept him for who he is and enjoy your meal.

Our first day in Maui and we were all starving from a day of traveling. We happened upon Ono Kau Kau and gave it a whirl. We were the only people in the little restaurant and the person who was working was VERY attentive and helpful. The menu selection was so big and diverse that we all had a hard time making our choices. Most of us ordered mixed plates. One of the boys with us ordered pancakes and french fries and they were a hit! I was told by the person who ordered the Lau Lau that it was the worst she’s ever had. Other than that, I think the rest of us were pleased with our food. It’s very much a small local restaurant. Some people came in and ordered their food to go.

Just left this place fuming. Walked in and ordered our food. Upon walking in, the Chinese man taking the orders asked us, «to-go or dine in?» We said dine in, we had our toddler who was ready to pass out after swimming and I wanted her to eat right away before falling asleep. 5 seconds after he asked as the first question he asked what do you guys want? This was our first time here and we were scanning the extensive menu on the board and we said«one moment please we are still looking». Two customers walk in, and again he asks us so what do you want? Again I said hold on please. So he proceeded to ask the two customers behind us if they were dining in or eating out. Um okay, you aren’t even done with our transaction and you want to help the people behind us? Ok whatever, so finally we ordered, and mind you this entire process of us walking in and ordering was probably less than 10 minutes. This Chinese man was so pushy. So husband paid, the guy took the money and we sat down. 30 freaking minutes later the Chinese man walks up to us and says«you ordered the shrimp burger and the garlic fish plate?» Husband says no I ordered the shrimp plate with kalua pork. So he walks back to the kitchen. By this time my daughter is already passed out, my husband and I are highly annoyed and very hungry. Then he comes back and asks us did you guys pay? Hubby says yes we paid $ 27.65. So from us paying to him asking only 4 people walked in and this guy couldn’t remembered is we paid or not. –_– An hour later my husband says I’m taking the money back. 3 patrons walked in and already got their food. My daughter is passed out and wasn’t able to eat, and we just want our money back. The Chinese guy had the audacity to say«can’t you wait a little longer?» Husband says no we’ve waited over an hour that’s long enough. Again he tried to argue and says well there was a mix up. A mix up alright that was caused by you! When you realized it, you should’ve told the back to fix it right away. And to top it off my order was sitting on the side of the counter the entire time. So he was going to serve me a cold meal after over an hour. This place has no aloha whatsoever, no manners and no COMMONSENSE. Never EVER coming back, and Unilocalers please listen to the reviews. I’m not just same raging hormonal woman who is keyboard trigger happy. I’m fuming because after all was said and done this man didn’t even have the thought to apologize. All he said was just wait a little longer. Bye Felicia.

Best meal I had for my entire stay in Maui! Loco Moco is the bomb!!! Hand formed burger patties made this hands down the best! Salt & pepper chicken wings are the 2nd best I’ve ever had. L & L sucks compared to this place!

Walked here from our condo while vacationing. Huge portions! We had leftovers for lunch the next day. Good pork, chicken, and short ribs. Also got an order of the fried rice. Great local/Chinese food and a good price. We didn’t wait very long for our to-go dinner to be ready. Would definitely go back!

Yum! We wanted some authentic Hawaiian food and stumbled upon Ono Kau Kau. The staff is really friendly and the service is quick. They have a small TV in there also if you want to watch games(for us, it was football). We got the mixed plate and the kalua pork and garlic shrimp combination and both were delicious! The pork has great flavor and very tender and it was stir fried with cabbage and onion. The garlic shrimp is super garlicy(yay), but I wish they gave us more shrimps(there were only 5) and that the shrimps were bigger. The mac salad is really tasty also.

If you like sub par or tasteless food, you’ll hate this restaurant. I ordered the local plate. When I opened it up, I thought the food looked tasteless. Boy was I wrong. My husband and I both immediately fell in love with it and were plotting ways to recreate the pork and cabbage stir fried dish. My husband opted for the BBQ plate. Absolutely amazing. Tender grilled meats with an almost teriyaki like flavor. Our least expensive meal thus far on the island, and some of the best food. Ambiance was non existent, but let’s face it. You’re in Hawaii. Go find a beach. Or a room.

If you want to experience«home-cooked taste, local food mixed plates», Ono Kau Kau is the pace to go. The price is good and the food is excellent. Super friendly folks and laid back atmosphere. My wife and I visit and eat here whenever we are in Maui. There are times where its empty, and times where you have to wait. If you don’t want to risk having to wait, why not call ahead and pick up the food to go? I’ve called ahead before and it takes more or less 15 minutes — so by the time you get there, your food is ready. They always package your food-to-go nicely too! Ono Kau Kau is close to Times and other shops, so you can drop in after running your quick shopping. Some folks gave this place a bad review, you can’t expect everyone have the same expectations — remember, this is a local joint, which gives you the home-cooked taste, and also runs on local time and pace. If you can’t chill and give this place a try — go to McDonalds.

Someone in my party wrote this, and I completely agree: «Do yourself a favor and keep driving by this place. Made a mistake and stopped with family when we were starving and craving breakfast after a swim in the ocean. You kNow how hungry you can be after that. Stayed and ordered against my better instincts. The man who took our order started coughing repeatedly. It was disgusting. The food came out, looked ok but the rice was old without a doubt and the eggs tasted like fish, as if the last thing in the pan as last nights fish dinner. YuK. After two bites I walked out. Seriously! I left my husband to pay the bill. Have never walked out of a restaurant before or reviewed one so you should know I really mean this. Can’t imagine why some reviews are positive. »

Little did I realize what was to the left of Lower Honoapiilani Road. I discovered Ono Kau Kau which was close by. Although they close at 10, we came by at 8 and could only order for take out… which was fine because that’s what we were going to do anyway. The food was all pretty basic Hawaiian food. Saimen– I asked for no hot dogs but it still had hot dogs in it Chow mein– huge portions Loco moco Musubi There were some people before us so it took a little time to get our order. I really wanted to try out the garlic shrimp, but we were going to Geste’s the next day and I didn’t wanna be shrimped out. Sadly the truck was closed for the week so I didn’t get any garlic shrimp at all! Regrets!

The Kalua pork — was good here compared to a few other local pads. The Lau lau — had too much banana leaves that can be overpowering the pork itself. The pork was a bit dry as they used less pork fat(which may be a good thing for the health cautious people.) So if you don’t mind it a bit on a dry side and less fat, you may like this. We got a teriyaki chicken musubi as well which was ok. A bit on bland side and didnt like the seaweed they used. Place is literally a local joint meaning a tiny shack thats kind of old, with a few tables that’s owned by a nice Chinese couple. Don’t expect too much and then complain. Want something fancy then go somewhere fancy. If you want local descent food(yet not the best you’ve ever had kinda food) for a descent price then this would be your humble place to eat at.

We ordered a whole mess of food a-la-carte to give them a try. –spam masubi –chicken katsu –kalbi –mongolian beef Everyone loved the spam masubi… but if you are serving it on the island, you better have a decent one. Kids liked the chicken katsu enough, although it wasn’t anything special. Husband wasn’t a fan of the kalbi. I think it resembled crispy tapa(fried Filipino skirt steak). The mongolian beef was over sauced and a bit soggy for our liking. The food overall is done more homestyle filipino so if you like that, you’ll love it here.

Not sure why it only has 3 ½ stars by Unilocalers but this was by far my favorite local mixed plate venue in all of Maui! I started with some Spam musubi which was good and better than the deep fried version at «Da Kitchen». Their Kalua pork mixed with cabbage was the ultimate! The pork Lau Lau came in a close 2nd best. The garlic shrimp was super garlicky and beef curry was not too spicy. The short ribs and teriyaki chicken were flavorful and I loved how there were at least 100 different mixed plate options. Great service and just good down home cooking!

Fun little place to get either Hawaiian, Chinese, or burgers. Right off the road and near many of the condos nearby. We had the locomoco and Chinese chicken noodles. Both were great and the regular size is enough for lunch and dinner. They also do to-go so you can order a regular for lunch and take the leftovers home for snack or dinner.

One of the best hole in wall in Maui that is serving up some real good mix plates. Plus it is clean with friendly service. My favorite is the Hamburger plate with grave. Three thick and tasty patties that are griddled to perfection every time. Caramelized crust on the outside and juice on the inside. Great sticky rice and nice mac salad. Plan your Maui trip around this one for sure!
