Because I didn’t want to feed the preditors (Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo), I chose SDCCU and am glad I did. Although, they’re not perfect, they do offer FREE Checking (no minimum balance required) and their financial reps try to be helpful.
CAVEAT: A banker at this institution just informed me that if your account remains inactive for 3 consecutive years, the State of California will confiscate your savings! I never heard of this before. But, I’m glad that I visited when I did.
I guess the billion dollar bail-​out wasn’t enough. So if you have a checking account, savings account, or IRA, make sure to add at least one ($ 1) dollar to an account to keep your money safe.
My main complaint is being automatically plugged into a call-​center with minimum wage staffers who will not provide your local branch phone number. So if you want info, you must drive over to your local branch. I just use this financial facility for small savings and free checking. The U.S. economy is in the toilet due to political corruption and corporate theft.

The Glass-​Steagall Act of 1933, passed during the Great Depression, prevented commercial banks from trading securities with their clients’ deposits and created the FDIC as a guard against bank runs. Passed in 1933 as the Banking Act, Glass-​Steagall was chipped away over the years and eventually repealed during the Clinton Administration with the Gramm-​Leach-​Bliley Act of 1999. Some experts believe that the act’s repeal contributed to the 2008 financial crisis, and the law served as a basis for the Volcker Rule of the 2009 Dodd-​Frank reform bill.

After my husband reported his debit card lost on a joint account, he was never informed that he and I had the same number on both of our cards, and that if they cancelled his, they would cancel mine. We were pretty angry. We live in Long Beach, work in Torrance, and had to literally race down the 405 South to catch the 73 toll road to make it on time. I tried calling the branch, and was hung up on twice, but when I spoke to a rep on the 800 #, she told me there was no way they would be willing to stay open a few minutes past 6. Well, we made it there at 6:03, and a teller was letting out a customer that was exiting. She kept trying to close the door on my husband even though he was only trying to explain that we lived so far and needed replacement cards or to pull out cash that same day because we had rent due. He was persistent, and the branch manager (I think) let him in. I was relieved but upset at the amount of information that was left out when cancelling our cards. I love SDCCU, and stay with them for their service. I hope they train their phone reps more accurately to avoid disgruntled customers.

We have been with this credit union about a year and a half and we couldn’t be happier. Yes, we now have to pay for stopped checks and purchase our own checks (my husband and I were so called «premier» customers at the big banks), but it is truly worth it for the customer service and peace of mind. Not only do they greet you by name but they actually talk to you like you matter and take care of you promptly. I always leave the branch smiling. It is nice to know that there still are banking institutions that actually place a high priority on retail customer service.

Some of the tellers are just plain dumb! Got so frustrated with them as of lately, I’m about ready to pull my money out of the bank! Don’t offer a Notary, only for SDCCU docs. Is that convenient? No! I think I’ll keep a minimum and put my money else where!
The wait to get someone on the phone at a local bank is extremely annoying as well.

Such nice people and a pleasure to deal with. Nicole was very helpful and nice. I highly recommend this credit union. Oh and if you open a new account there is no waiting for your debit card to come in the mail they give it to you right away!

Absolutely love this Credit Union location. I’m greeted by first name as soon as I walk in the door and feel appreciated as a member. I look forward to getting my first loan when shopping for my next car or buying a new home. Nicole Bailey is wonderful!

Have had some accounts at this location for quite a while now. It started out really customer oriented with great service but have experienced a decline in this area recently. It takes two days or more to get a deposit at the ATM posted as they don’t own the ATM? I used to like going inside the location but now have felt a stressed atmosphere from the employees, especially, the branch manager. I’ll be looking for a more friendly bank in the near future.

I opened a savings account here a year or two ago, in spite of their one measly location here in Orange County. The gentleman who opened my account was exceptionally helpful and answered all of my questions and concerns with the point of view of a consumer who wanted to know what she was in for.
Since I use the SDCCU app for deposits, I have rarely had to go in to this location, but recently I’ve been in several times and am each time really impressed with how friendly and customer-​service oriented the staff is. Compared to my primary bank it’s almost like walking into a place much happier than a bank.
Even if they only have one location in Orange County, they’ve got my business based on how welcoming it is in there. Thanks SDCCU.
