Ordered take out tonight. Overall it was tasty but the portions seemed smaller than the pictures or what is talked about on Unilocal and they gave me the wrong type of shells. Would come back to eat at the place just won’t go out of my way for take out again.

Check your debit and credit card transactions!!! They overcharge. Good food, but pay cash. It can be quite slow when they are busy. Generally worth the wait. Excellent salsa. For to-go orders, call ahead, and check your food before you leave.

By far and away the best and most authentic Mexican restaurant I’ve ever been to. It’s always nice when you’ve never heard of half of the things on the menu because you know you’re getting to try something new. We had the burrito marino(absolutely huge), the shrimp chimichangas, and this thing I can’t remember the name of but it was our favorite thing and I’ll post a picture of it. Service was quick and friendly and they have cheap specials which is always a plus. Already looking forward to coming back.

My girlfriend and I eat at this restaurant far too often. It is our default place to go because, the food is always so good, except the stewed chicken! They have a nice atmosphere with authentic looking Mexican artwork, which looks pretty neat. Neither one of us speak Spanish, So we have fun watching the soap opera’s while we eat and make up dialogue.

Maybe we came on an off night. The salsa is good til you get the weird pepper taste at the end. But still looking forward to the fajitas I ordered. Which were a huuuuuuge letdown. Tasteless is the word I would use to describe them. I had my husband taste just to make sure it wasn’t just me. It wasn’t, he said it was so bland he offered me part of his dinner. Which was sweet of him considering his order came out wrong. He ordered a soft taco and a beef enchilada and a chicken enchilada. He got a hard taco and 2 chicken enchiladas. Again, maybe we came on an off night. Hard to imagine a Saturday not being on your A game, but I don’t think we will come back again to try our luck.

Seems like this place is in an old KFC. Low key, inexpensive and amazing flavors. Would go again in a minute.

One of the better Mexican places in town. Much more what I’m used to from growing up in the Southwest. Would recommend the chorizo queso dip and burritos w/green sauce. If you need a split bill let them know right off the bat, trying to do it after is kind of a hassle.

Great food! We got tacos and fajitas for our dinner. Portions were great and gave us a cheap lunch the next day.

My expectations were low when walking in the place, all the tables were filthy, the walls look like they are falling down on the inside, the tables and chairs didn’t match. But we decided to keep an open mind and prayed yhe food would be worth it. It took almost fifteen minutes after seating ourselves to even get a menu. Another twenty to get two simple drinks. The chips seemed to be homemade, the salsa was so runny it was like red water. The«Mexican Guacamole» was amazing. Fresh Avacados, onions, cilantro, and tomatos to make a very good refeshing dip. The Bistek Ranchero was so spicy my friend couldn’t even finish it. I had the Fajita El Maguey. The tortillas were very good and fresh. The main courses were mediocre. The refried beans were disgusting and ice cold. At the end of our meal we were brought the check, we asked if we could split the check. It took twenty minutes for someone else to bring us back the same check and tell us he will split it at the register. The food was edible but the service was so bad that we won’t be back.

The hubby and I decided to try a new Mexican joint and since all of the reviews seemed good we stopped by El Maguey. I was severely disappointed. It was dingy inside. The salsa was runny and had very few vegetables in it, it was like a broth. My husband ordered fajitas, which had no flavor whatsoever. I had the tacos al pastor, disgusting. My rice and beans were lukewarm and the meat in the tacos was chewy and the flavor was terrible. I ate half a taco but couldn’t get any more down. We will definitely not be going back to this place.

Best darn mexican restaurant in the area. For years I’ve been looking for a good, authentic mexican restaurant in the Lafayette area. I finally found this place last year. It’s fantastic. The food is cheap, authentic, flavorful, and fresh. The service has always been great too. The staff is friendly and they are quick with their service. I’ve been here several times and have yet to have an unpleasant experience or a dish I haven’t liked. Most importantly, they have good salsa and offer delicious queso blanco dip. Eating here makes me reminisce on the time I spent in Costa Rica. It’s a casual place that you can take your family to and enjoy a good meal without spending a ton. I would highly recommend this establishment for your next dinner.

I hesitate to even give two stars, but it is edible so you get two. The food is bland and apparently the only redeeming quality is size. Yes, you get a lot of it, but this«food» is lacking any flavor or quality. Speaking of quality, when we left we got to see where some of the produce comes from and it was daunting to say the least. Picture one of those scary white vans without windows and full of old tires and dirty rags, then on top of that are boxes of onions and limes. Sure didn’t look sanitary. Also, the place was filled with screaming children. Drawing on windows with greasy little hands, standing on chairs, yelling and really adding to the generally poor ambience of this establishment. The service was pretty miserable as well, they had to ask what we ordered more than once and seemed barely able to get basic service accomplished. But really, the food is just awful people. Nothing redeeming about it. You are better off just opening a can of refried beans and throwing some old cheese on top. I have had better food at Taco Rico, Mi Cabanita, Jarocho’s, Don Pablos, and Taco Bell than what is offered here. We tried twice just hopong that we came on and off day, but nope, it is just awful. How the heck did it get such good reviews?

Good friendly service. They do not have many options for vegetarians. But I am sure they can improvise if you ask them. I ordered vegetarian fajitas which was good. Guacamole was much better than other places. Portions were good.

Heading down from Illinois to South Carolina. This place was worth a short drive from the highway. We had basic stuff, tacos(chicken, lengua and carne asada), burrito, and enchilada. The food was flavorful and corn tortillas were fresh. What places serve nopales? That was a great thing to find.

The Mexican guacamole was a great starter, very chunky and fresh. My sister and I split the Texas burrito topped with a combo of red and green sauce and a pastor torta. The burrito was enormous, definitely plenty to split. It was full of beef, chicken, a few shrimp, sautéed veggies and rice and beans. Soooo delicious. The torta bread melted in my mouth and was perfectly matched by the tender pastor! I don’t know how they made such normal Mexican food taste so good and I’m even from Texas! Also, friendly and fast service

El Maguey has become my go-to Mexican restaurant. What really keeps me coming back is the delicious carnitas — tender and delicious. I prefer to get it in taco form. It’s really the best I’ve had. I also like to get the lunch special #5(available all day) which has two tacos and a «small» burrito. You can get tacos«mexican style» with onion, cilantro and a lime, or «supreme» with lettuce, tomato and sour cream. I prefer mexican style. The supreme is good too, but the generous amount of toppings can overwhelm the taste of the meat. I tend to get grilled chicken in my burritos, which are served with a mild verde sauce and queso. There are more than just tacos and burritos. they have a large menu with lots of good stuff. They also have horchata and flavored waters(like pineapple and mango) to drink. oh yeah — fresh chips! All good stuff. This place is definitely worth a try.

Look, just do yourself a favor and order a chorizo burrito and get the chunky guacamole to dip your chips in. Thank me later.

This’ll be a short one. Our favorite tattoo artist knows Lizz C. and I love good, real Mexican food, so he’d told us about this place and of course we HAD to go and check it out. We were NOT disappointed! They have the proper non-gringo stuff on the menu to let you know they’re serious.(In this case, lengua and tripa!) They also make their own tortillas, and they are very, very good. Lizz doesn’t eat corn or wheat very often, so she ordered 3 tacos meat-only; they didn’t even bat an eye. Was no big deal. I ordered carne asada — one of my «acid tests» for a Mexican place. We also ordered some guacamole. The guac is insanely good. Very chunky, definitely fresh-made, and just very, very good. Wow. The house-made tortillas are just awesome — a really nice touch and one you don’t see at many places anymore. My carne asada was, well, perfect, as were the accompanying rice and beans. I’ll let Lizz comment on her tacos-meat-only when she gets around to her review. We’ll be back; this is a very, very good Mexican restaurant — perhaps the New Best in Lafayette!
