Sadness. We found the stand boarded up and closed when we visited during Tulip Festival in April 2014. No fresh barbecued salmon taco on frybread, no enticing smokey scent, no more, not this time. Where am I supposed to eat in La Conner now?

We were totally excited for our road trip from Seattle to Vancouver, and along the way, the guides said to take the coastal roads through the small towns.(Check out out post for Tulip Town, it’s pretty amazing)!! One of the towns that we came across is La Conner — an artist enclave with restaurants and art galleries filled with bric-à-brac that made this stop pretty unique! It was a very, very popular town, even though getting there wasn’t entirely easy. As is our ability to eat at any time of the day(a skill that we have acquired through years of training and discipline) we wandered around Main Street to find the perfect place. Now there’s a lot of attractive restaurants in La Conner, and looking at the patrons, they all seemed to be quite satisfied with their meals. but it was this one place, and outdoor shack, that drew our attention: Legends Salmon Bar. So Legends Salmon Bar is an outdoor shack located on a dock and the seating area has a great view of the Skagit River. Being that it was an incredibly warm and sunny day, it couldn’t have been better timing for us to enjoy the outdoors! The Salmon is grilling on an open Alder wood smoker which is it’s calling card from blocks away; you can smell that wonderful fish that subliminally beckons you to come… There was no doubt in our mind; we had to order the Salmon!!! And it was absolutely glorious! So fresh and moist, there was no other comparison to what we’ve had before-the color of the salmon; the deepness of flesh that exhumed flavor, fecund with fresh and saltwater in its cells. Known for its Fry Bread, Legends is Native American cuisine at its finest. Pure and simple, the Frybread alone is enough to come here, dough that is deep fried and then smothered in butter, it an artery clogging experience not be missed… We also order the Crab Sandwich; with the freshness of the sea, the FryBread almost overwhelmed the taste, but still delicious! But as is with trips like these, it’s not only the quality of the food, it’s the environment and the people that you meet along the way. The ladies and gentlemen that run Legends own a warmth and unadulterated way of life that make you want to rethink your own daily program… Ratings(Out of Five Stars) Food: 4 Ambience: 5 Service: 5

An absolute pleasure to dine here. We had the salmon lunch and It was spectacular! The food was well priced and well crafted. The frybread was a unique treat. The tasty food, waterfront seating and that native american feel really made this a great experience. We started here on a food tour and may have just ended here to!

On the waterfront First St drag. You smell it before you see it, with wafts of enticing alder wood smoke. Salmon and oysters are the order of the day here, prepared plainly, but without anything in the way. They have a sign saying, «Famous Frybread,» which comes by way of the Swinomish tradition, and I fully believe it. Great fun, and great food.(See uploaded pictures.) Cash and checks only — no credit, no debit, no plastic of any sort. Seating is outside, on a deck above the river. Currently the Category for this listing is «Indian.» I suspect that’s because there’s no «Native American» category. As may be – you should expect Indian-like-Swinomish, not Indian-like-Mumbai.

As described in the previous review, the smoke and the open air picnic tables drew me here, the friendly cashier was a bonus. My alder-smoked salmon was tasty although slightly overdone, my wife liked her oysters. The fry bread was delicious — basically a giant donut with less sugar. My mistake was getting two — they are oil-saturated and must have 1000 calories each, and invite slathering with the available jams. I’m still not hungry 9 hours later. All the patrons looked content. Cash only.

I was heading to the La Connor Brewery and was stopped by the BBQ smoke at the Legends Salmon Bar. To be honest, I don’t think I recall seeing their business sign. I heard Elvis’s singing loudly by the waterfront and smelled good food. The cashier is a very friendly lady, who acted and sounded like Rachel Ray. What a happy girl! Anyway, I tried the fry bread for the first time. I liked it. I also ordered the Wally’s dog. «Rachel«told me up front that the dog will take about 5 – 7 minutes because it is coming out from the hot pit(BBQ grill) on the deck. That’s where the BBQ smoke came from… I see. The dog was good and I hope I have room to try their salmon and Indian oyster taco. I must do that next time.
