Animal Emergency Clinic of the Hudson Valley

If I had to review the practice and the 2 assistants that were on duty I would give them 5 stars. Unfortunately the Vet on duty Dr. Black is the rudest most condescending person ever. If you cannot immediately come up with a few thousand dollars or cannot call and ask someone for their credit card number, her comment is «too bad» so thankful for a local vet who is treating the dog for ¹⁄₁₀ of the cost and is very pleasant. To be a vet you should have compassion for animals and act like you enjoy your job.

This place saved my dog’s life a couple of times.
They are a wonderful resource, open when the vets are closed. I’m so grateful they are there.

I am very pleased with the care my dog, Beaker, received at the Animal Emergency Clinic in Kingston. Beaker was out last night and came home with a bad cut that clearly needed emergency medical attention. My husband brought him to AEC and with the number of stitches needed, he required anesthesia and an overnight stay. When I picked him up this morning, the doctor and receptionist were both very nice and informative about the treatment and ongoing medication and care. It was clear they treated my dog with a lot of compassion. Also, I felt the price was in line with a regular, non-​emergency vet practice (and it turned out to be less than the estimate provided when we brought our dog in). Again, I am pleased and while I hope to never have an emergency, I am comfortable knowing that this clinic is nearby.

Terrible service. The entire process of taking my kittens there was difficult. From the initial phone call where the receptionist was cold and unhelpful, to the tech who told me to «look it up online» when I asked if they could tell me how old the kittens might be (they were rescued), to the doctor who gave my sick kitten a huge overdose of medication with no apology or explanation more than an «oops» and «she’ll be fine» and walking out the door.
When your pet is sick and you’re scared and worried, you expect to be treated with respect and care, and to get medical information you can trust. That was absolutely not the case here.

My bunny had some complications with his neuter and at 11:30 last night, he ended up ripping his incisions open and bleeding everywhere. We drove him the 40 minutes to the Kingston location after calling to make sure they were expecting us. I was very happy with their amount of concern. Dr. Ferguson was very friendly and energetic. She immediately took him into the exam room and did a thorough check of the area before discussing the options. She then took him to the back and cleaned him up before examining him further. She told me that she wanted to do what was absolutely best for him and make sure he would heal properly. We decided to immediately undergo surgery and have my bunny fixed up again. Of course it was expensive, as it was a «surprise» procedure at 2:00am. What more can you expect? The vet and her assistant were both incredibly compassionate and caring and even did their best to help me save money. The procedure was quick and professional and the incisions look a hundred times better. They informed our regular vet of what was going on and had his prescription filled there so that it would not cost as much. I will definitely be returning here for future emergencies (hopefully, though, there will be none).

It’s great that the area has available veterinary care for the middle of the night emergencies that often happen, but I strongly recommend checking to find out which vet is on duty first. After having our beloved companion seen by Dr. Jamie Kibel I am baffled that such a person lacking compassion and emotional and mental sensitivity is allowed to be an authority involving care. I want to give her the benefit of the doubt that maybe she has having a bad night, but in these often stressful and delicate circumstances professionalism is key, and Dr. Kibel lacked that. She was rude to her staff and manipulative and confusing/​confused regarding her advice on what we should do to best provide care. Possibly this is a facet of her personality she uses for her own private gain or something she can no longer recognize or control. Find a new line of work!

Yes, this animal hospital is a little bit more money because it is an emergency hospital. However, some of their prices were comparable to my regular vet! Considering that it was busy, the waiting room was spotless! The entire staff was understanding and kind and I could hear them talking to my dog (calming her down) while they had her in the back. I would definitely bring either one of my animals here in the event of another emergency.

I was puzzled by the other reviews. Being an avid animal lover and pet owner for many years, I have been to many of the area’s animal hospitals. I found the prices here to be in keeping with other facilities if not less expensive. And certainly, everywhere else is closed when most people get out of work. But most importantly, when my partner and I brought in our elderly and very ill cat, not only was she treated in the most compassionate way possible, but so were we. Our options were explained gently and we were given time to process the information at our own speed. We ultimately decided to proceed with hospice care and to date, our cat is still with us living at home peacefully and comfortably. Thank you so much for being there when no one else is open, and for being so considerate.

Of course it’s pricey, any «emergency» situation is going to get you over the barrel (tow trucks, emergency room visits… ah the price paid for convenience!)
We were new puppy parents, she swelled up like a balloon and couldn’t vomit, despite her efforts. We drove an hour, after calling for an opinion on whether or not we should make the trip. The girl on the phone was honest, saying it could be gas or an allergic reaction… but considering she was so young, if it was HER puppy, she’d come in. We waited for a minute or two (the puppy was fine by then… she puked all over me en route) and the vet saw us. She told us the pup probably ate something she shouldn’t have. We had an x-​Ray done, which was entirely for piece of mind, and the vet recommended a gentle food for the night. She did call us to check in on the pup the next day, and let our regular vet know the situation.
We spent a lot of money, but our puppy was worth it. While we were there, we chatted with some other staff, they were bottle feeding a SUPER teeny kitten, helping a dog that got hit by a car leave, and helping an elderly dog that had trouble walking in. Plenty of compassion, if you ask me. And I was beyond glad they were there, despite my dogs major issue being gas and an upset stomach.

Came here last night thinking that our cat of 13 years was dying and were immediately able to hand her over as soon as we walked in the door. We saw the doctor (there was only one! with one assistant answering the phones and also helping her in the operating room) working very quickly to save our cat’s life. Unfortunately, our cat didn’t make it but it wasn’t because of the vet who saw her, the cat went into arrest as the vet was quickly explaining to us what our options were and what she thought could be wrong with our cat. We were able to go into the operating room as our cat was passing away (sad :(:(:() and although the phones were ringing off the hook (on a Friday night!) she took what felt like an hour to carefully explain to my Mom what had happened, what she did to help the cat, showed her X-​rays, etc.
The vet even offered to call my Mom after her shift was over to talk her through what had happened even further!!! That is why I gave this clinic 4 stars. Our cat took priority since she was potentially dying. This poor vet was the only one working that night and we heard of at least 2 or 3 emergency situations coming in which is why the vet couldn’t take even more time to talk to my Mom.
Good experience, bad outcome but it wasn’t the clinic’s fault! I don’t think this clinic deserves the low amount of stars that it has on Unilocal elsewhere on the internet; it speaks nothing to the intelligence and kind understanding of the personnel there and only about the financial aspect of it which should tell you one thing… if you are going to use this clinic, BRING A LOT OF CASH. When you call the clinic they will tell you up front that the visit will cost at least $ 125 and that they do not accept certain credit cards. Be prepared financially or you could end up with a very bad situation. Otherwise, this is a great place to take your pet in an emergency!!!

I have a 6 month old puppy who awoke me in the middle of the night for what i thought would be just a trip outside, upon letting him out of his crate i notice that his face was swollen on the one side. I sprung into action and quickly got some benadryl. After about two hours the swelling had not gone down and i notice that he was breaking out in hives. I made the decision to take my lil guy in. Back in May we had taken another dog in and had pleasant experience and it was the only place I knew of at 5:30 in the morning. Upon arrival the Vet Tech was very nice to us and took the necessary information from us, then we went into the exam room. Moments later Dr. Johanna Kosofsky came and as she came into the room my puppy had let out a small bark. Who can blame him… his face was swollen and he was covered in hives. I filled her on what was going on with him and what i had done at home.
She never went up to my puppy or greeted him in any manner, she asked ME to raise his lip up so she could see his gum color. She then wanted to listen to his heart… she firmly told me that i needed to get a firm grip on his head so that when she was listening to his heart he wouldn’t bend back and bite her… WHAT!!! She told me that he gave her a «warning growl» WHAT!!! My response was that I didn’t what him traumatized because of the situation. She was clearly afraid of my dog… for no reason. I should have just left at that point and waited for his normal vet to open… I didn’t want to chance it though, he was having an allergic reaction. She went out of her way not to have any kind of contact with my lil man, but couldn’t openly tell me why.
She showed no interest in connecting with my puppy… Did i mention he was a puppy? I feel as though she made an assumption as to what breed he was, therefore coming to a conclusion about his temperament. I feel as though i too was judged inappropriately. He is commonly mistaken for a Pit Bull but he is actually a Cane Corso Mastiff… not to mention he is an AKC Star Puppy and is currently working on getting his AKC CGC title then hopefully achieving Therapy Dog Status. I have worked hard with him to beat any stereotyping that we may come across.
I have never walked out of an office, let alone a Vet Clinic feeling sooooo insulted. I left with the impression that we had interrupted her night.
I can only hope that my lil man has already forgotten the horrible experience we had this morning… I would not recommend this place at all.
«Combining compassion and technology for your very special family member» Where was the compassion… Where was the professionalism…
P. S. We’ve decided that he had been bit by a spider… he is doing well and is back to his snuggly and lovey self! He has given this review his paw of approval.

This place is really pricy. $ 118 just for an exam, but they did have compassion for my dog. They even made us hang out a little to see if the swelling in his face was going down after the shot.

This place is terrible. Not only do they have high prices, but they also have no compassion for their love of pets.
