Outstanding service! Not to mention the amazing food… It’s amazing everytime! Atmosphere is very tiny but it’s okay they make up for it with their amazing food and service! You have to try it.

ANOTHERAMAZINGEXPERIENCE at the Saltbox Café last evening! Our reservation was open right on time, service was stellar, wine was delicious, and entrees amazing. The grilled beef tenderloin was one of the best cuts I’ve had in my life. Thanks again for the fantastic experience!

We were taken to this very unassuming restaurant by friends who live on the outer banks. The atmosphere is not at all fancy and was pretty loud give the small size. However, the food was extremely well prepared and delicious. My salmon moist and flavorful with stir fry veggies and light noodles. A bit on the spicy side but very good. Our server did a nice job and was friendly and competent. All of the others in our party had an equally nice experience.

The Salt Box is a hidden gem on OBX. The restaurant is off the beaten path in Colington and serves delicious, imaginative food. It is a small restaurant so be sure to make reservations in advance.

Lived up to billing — husband and I had Sunday brunch here. Sat at the bar, ate Shrimp and Grits(delicious, minor quibble is that perhaps shrimp would have been A+ level if a bit larger and shell — maybe even head on). Husband had the crab Benedict. ALL jumbo lump crab(not a cake) topped with poached egg and hollandaise. Both plates came with very fresh fruit, nicely sliced to show the chef’s well above average knife skills. Coffee was good quality and piping hot. Atmosphere — laid back, country place with friendly service. No complaints here!

We ate at The Saltbox and our meal was outstanding. Don’t let the outside look or marquee fool you! Its what is inside that counts. The atmosphere is casual/chic, quaint little bar and linen draped tables and booths. The wait staff was informative, friendly and knowledgeable. Menu was very good and had a New Orleans flavor. Definitely my go to restaurant when family and friends come to visit!

Great food and service. A welcoming setting with great food and service. If you can leave the kids at home one night or just want something a little nicer than the normal fare in OBX this is the perfect place to do it. I’d recommend whatever fish is on special and the ribs. Reasonable wine prices, too!

Best meal we have had in Kill Devil Hills in a few years! We had the Crab Mac and Cheese, BBQ Shrimp, and Pork Belly as apps. Loved them all. I had the Duck breast as a entrée, very nicely prepared. My husband and mother-in-law had a great rib eye, cooked the perfect medium rare. Father-in-law had the trout and enjoyed that as well. Only downside is no liquor, only beer and wine, local restrictions to blame. However their selection of both was extensive. The setting was great, right on a marsh. It’s on the smaller side, but they do take reservations which is really nice and rare down here. The service was great, our waitress did a great job to take care of us. Awesome find!

We ate at the SaltBox on a weeknight when visiting OBX, and I now have a new favorite restaurant there. Everyone in our party of six raved about the dinner. I had the shrimp and grits, which were more robust with deeper flavor than your typical S&G offering — lots of Andouille sausage, and generous servings. The restaurant itself is off the beaten track but worth seeking out. It’s in a laid-back wooden building far from the main drag. There’s a good beer and wine selection(no liquor), and the service was great. The chef came out to check on us as well. We’ll be back for sure on our next OBX visit.

Went there recently and loved everything. The tomato soup is outrageously good. Highly recommend it! Had the crab cake sandwich and it was delicious! Service is wonderful, too. Just an overall, great place to go.

I’m a little late with this review, we actually visited in June of 2015 but I want to give credit where it’s due. We were searching for breakfast but didn’t want one of the packed pancake houses along the main stretch. We found the Salt Box Café on Unilocal and decided the extra drive would be worth it… It really was. I had the french toast with berries, which was delicious! My husband is still drooling over the bacon. The interior is small and cozy. When we arrived we were the only patrons but they didn’t smother us. Also, if you like any of the artwork, you can buy it right off the wall. We’ll definitely be back the next time we’re in the Outer Banks.

What a find! We had our last meal of the week here and boy was it a perfect ending. Crab cakes and fried green tomatoes prepared to perfection… and the desserts… wow! Don’t let its rough exterior fool you. This place was top notch!

We discovered the Salt Box Café while driving around to the bay side of Kill Devil Hills. It’s now our favorite place down here. They allowed us to dine out in their picnic area with our dog. The food was amazing. Everything we ordered was fresh and delicious. The chef came out and talked to our vegan daughter in law, then made her a special vegan dish that wasn’t on the menu. My shrimp and grits dish was fabulous. The setting is pleasant and comfortable. The staff couldn’t have been more friendly and accommodating! We will definitely be back.

Server was friendly and they honored our reservation in a timely manner I dined with my husband and three kids. The food was outstanding. I am a sophisticated traveler and diner, this was the best meal in obx. A chef who cares about the ingredients and the presentation. Don’t be fooled by the outside of the place, it looks a little sketchy. But inside is wonderful I had the wasabi crusted flounder. Hubby had crab cakes and kids had steak. All were perfectly cooked and delicious with great sides to accompany the meal The desserts are homemade and worth the calories!

This place is incredible. We stopped in for brunch with family and would have come back for dinner had we planned on staying in town. The chef is brilliant — changes his menu often and thoughtfully. You can taste the passion for what he does in creations and I guarantee once you stop in — you’ll be back!

One of the best meals i’ve had at the beach in a very long time! The soft shell entrée with the asian noodles I could eat every day! The New Orleans style BBQ Shrimp were also awesome — and this is coming from a girl who spent 4 years living in New Orleans. A few of the guys at our table also got the ribs — and just raved about how delicious and tender they were! Desserts were also delish… but order for the table and share — they are HUGE! What put this restaurant over the top — and secured its 5-star rating — was something very simple — they take reservations! My family of 8 was able to walk in – get seated — and not deal with a lot of the hassle that usually comes with trying to go out to dinner in the Outer Banks. We will definitely be back!

Best crab benny EVER! Drove from VAB to come visit this eatery. I was very impressed by the food and I had a mimosas sunrise that was to die for! The atmosphere is nice the building is very small but I liked the artwork on the walls which added the OBX feel. I had the crab cakes Benny and would recommend it to anyone for breakfast!

Went there last night with friends and it is still great ! I love the fact they take reservations because it is not a big place and the word is spreading fast with the locals. I will wait to see if the summer tourists can find it. They had fresh rockfish last night and I had the onion crusted rockfish which really had no onion taste but was fantastic! The deserts are awesome and one person had the coconut cream pie which might have easily been the best pie I ever ate. It was unbelievable.

Our group stopped in for lunch after fishing for a few hours and lo and behold there was a huge group having a gathering at The Saltbox. We were thinking we were going to have to give up but the staff quickly offered to seat us outside in their screened in outdoor area. Probably the best place for us after a few hours fishing anyhow! We were quickly seated and our server took our drink order, he was friendly and efficient. I had the fried flounder sandwich which was amazing, the slaw was good too. My niece enjoyed her ribs and said they were tender and flavorful. Another in our party had the gyro which he said was also great. We had one little person with us who had a grilled cheese, which was an amazing grilled cheese on lovely French bread. She raved about it. Our server checked on us multiple times and was quick to clear plates and bring the check. The chef/owner also checked in with us on our way out. This is a small family owned restaurant, so if you are looking for a big turn and burn establishment without character this is not for you. Check out the menu online, if the prices for dinner are high for your budget they offer a very reasonable lunch menu.

Wow! A small place with very involved and friendly owners. We stopped in for lunch on a Friday around 11am. We ordered all of the fries and onion rings to try: the sweet potato fries and the jalapeño paprika fries were to die for. The crab cake sandwich and flounder sandwich were both also great. My nephew ordered the grilled cheese and tomato soup and I would highly recommend it for adults! The soup was creamy and full of yummy fresh basil and the bread on the sandwich was crusty and buttery. A must try!
