Winnwood Skate Center

So much fun! I went with a group of other women and we had a blast (and a good workout) at the Saturday matinée. It took a minute to get used to all the kiddos doing tricks and literally skating circles around us :-)

We made a road trip out from Denver last year for the Doin’ it on the Wood skate Jam (Friday and Saturday night late skate session event, 21 and up).
Clean facility, very friendly, with a few really nice touches:
1) the floor. THE FLOOR. This is the wood floor by which I will measure all wood skating rink floors from now on.
2) interior layout of the building has no wall between the skate floor and the seating area on the side, it was unusual, but really nice, it prevented the typical traffic jam at the entry point to the rink.
3) beginners floor — what a GREAT idea. It’s a nice, square skate floor area separate form the main rink floor, so the real newbies can get their wheels under them out of traffic — like practicing a stick shift in a parking lot instead of the highway… GREAT PLAN
4) Great skaters to watch! man, these folks have SKILLS. different skating style than we see in Denver and that was great fun
5) welcoming, friendly atmosphere
Did I mention the awesome wood floor? Giant sized, and curved so you always skate with the grain, even around the corners? Did I mention it is the BEST!!!
I would give them more than 5 stars of I could.

We ended up there on a Saturday morning because I had some business in the area and needed the family to kill some time while I worked. Luckily they were actually having a skating class for beginners so the kids got the opportunity to learn there. The place was super clean, inexpensive and fun for the whole family.

My friend and I went with the Kansas City Adventure Club Meet-​up Group for a night of roller skating. Thursday night is 21 and over and they spin their old school jams from 8:30pm to 11:30pm. It’s great to skate to your heart’s content and not have to worry about tripping over someone half your size. The people that go there on a regular basis got some hella skate skills. That was most of the fun, watching everyone else show off. Who knew that so many people were so good at doing disco dance moves and the Bus Stop on skates? If you are willing to stay up late on a school/​work night, you will enjoy yourself with some adult roller skating and great music.
