Went to pick up a couple of apple trees, which is odd since I have no idea what I’m doing when it comes to, well, anything nature-related. Dude here at Soil Service was extremely helpful and not only answered all my questions, but gave me a bunch of great pointers that I would never have considered. This time next year, I may have some living apple trees thanks to these guys.

Nothing is more exciting in the spring than 1) seeing my bulbs come up(purchased at Soil Service); 2) shopping for annuals at Soil Service! Love everything about this place and all the long time staff are wonderful.

I recently moved to the Brookside area, and after checking out the reviews on Unilocal,I stopped by to check things out. The staff was friendly, and more importantly extremely helpful. Though they did not have the plant I was looking for, but I ended up buying some additional plants from their nursery after seeing how knowledgable they were about their plants. I look forward to visiting them this fall for my next round of gardening.

I was visiting family in the area and wanted to do something special to thank them for hosting me. Not wanting to settle for the typical«houseplant gift», I visited Soil Service and found that Gary, the owner, had a number of unique ideas. I could quickly tell that he had an incredible knowledge of plants of all types, but he enthusiastically explained things in a way that was easily understood by a novice like myself. By asking questions of me, he helped me to find some unusual plants that were entirely different than what I had considered and, best of all, were a HUGE hit with my host! Gary and Soil Service made me look like both a stellar houseguest and a genius!

This is a one stop shop for anything you can imagine for your garden and landscaping. Located in the heart of urban KC, it’s a green patch in the cement and asphalt that surrounds it. What I love about this place is that they have everything and it’s all in great shape. As soon as you start browsing, a person asks if they can help and really digs into what you’re looking for. They will even ask the sun and soil conditions at your home to make sure you get something that works. Not only are they friendly, but they are extremely knowledgeable. We bought some Moneywort, Balloon Flowers, and a Hibiscus called«Lil Kim» Rose of Sharon. Hope that last one doesn’t go gangster on me. Make sure to check Soil Service out, they are awesome!

OK. You can buy buy seeds, grass, pesticides, flowers, herbicides, garden tools, mulch, and all that jazz from a big-box store. You can. But you CAN’T get good answers to any questions. You can’t get really good rock and mulch blends. You can’t get a lot of things except a screaming headache. So I recommend Soil Service as a first stop and maybe even a last stop and every stop in between. Hard to go wrong here.

Soil Service is a very good, local lawn and garden center. This time of year they really shine with a wide variety of transplants(herbs, veggies, flowers, other plants) available. They have a nursery across the street that as far as I know offers trees and other larger plants. Surprisingly, I have never made it over there. I mainly have need for the garden center. Besides transplants, there is always a wide selection of pots, mulch, grass seed, other seeds, soil/compost, and every tool/accessory you could want. They also have a pretty sizable collection of succulents to choose from. The staff is always helpful and knowledgeable. They don’t necessarily approach you to see if you need help, but if you approach them, they are always great to work with. They also have a program called Dirty Dollars. You can earn dirty dollars on the amount you spend in the months of April and May(maybe $ 1 for every $ 10 spent… I think?) that are redeemable during the month of July. It can end up being a pretty good deal. Overall prices are fairly standard for garden centers. Some items may be a little overpriced, but most are not. They can get pretty hectic on weekends during the Spring and early Summer, but it is worth the visit.
